The utilization of traditional Chinese medicine and associated factors in Taiwan in 2002

Background Previous studies have noted that there is a high utilization rate of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） services in Taiwan, China and in western countries, but few studies investigated factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan. This study analyzes the utilization rate and the factors associated with the utilization of TCM in Taiwan. Methods Data for this study were from the 2002 HPKAP Survey that conducted the face-to-face questionnaire interviews of people aged 15 years and over from October 2002 to March 2003 in Taiwan. This study analyzed the utilization of TCM outpatient services, including admission to the hospital and clinic visits. Results A total of 26 755 participants completed the survey in the six-month period. The data revealed that 10.4% of participants had utilized TCM services in the past one month while 4.2% of participants utilized TCM only （without using Western medicine outpatient services （WM） or Folk therapy （FT））. The average visits of TCM services per patient was higher among people who had utilized TCM and FT services （2.68 visits） than among those who had utilized WM and FT services （2.15 visits） or TCM services alone （2.15 visits） during the previous one month. Younger people （odds ratio OR = 1.78, 95%CI= 1.47-2.16）, women （compared with men）, and people with higher education levels （OR = 1.58, 95%CI= 1.25-1.98） were more likely to visit TCM than compared groups. People with self-reported poor health status （OR = 2.07, 95%CI= 1.76-2.44） and people who exercise regularly （OR = 1.17, 95%CI= 1.07-1.27） had higher ORs to visit TCM service than comparison group. Conclusions There is a high utilization of TCM in Taiwan. Further studies are needed to investigate the related factors and determinants between the utilization of TCM and the utilization of FT in Taiwan.

Profile Distribution of Soil Properties on Sloping Cropland in Yingwugou Small Watershed of the Dan River Basin

Based on 3 m×3 m grid in sloping cornfield with soil auger in Yingwugou Small Watershed of the Dan River Basin,a total of 39sampling points were collected,and soil water content and nutrient content were measured in different soil ***,the soil properties of different depth have been analyzed by traditional statistical and geo-statistics *** results showed:the mean value of total nitrogen and soil organic carbon reduced as soil depth increased in *** soil water content increased as the soil depth *** change of total phosphorus with soil depth was not *** total nitrogen,soil water content,soil organic carbon and total phosphorus presented a moderate intensity variation and strong spatial *** the four sampling depths,semi-variance model can simulate spatial structure of total nitrogen,soil water content and total phosphorus in 0 to 10 cm and 10 to 20 cm *** the spatial structure of soil organic carbon was not good,which could not be simulated with semi-variance *** analysis with Kriging interpolation showed that,the total nitrogen,soil water content and total phosphorus presented layered distribution in 0 to 10 cm and 10 to 20 cm;when the spatial distribution changed to 10 to 20cm from 0 to 10 cm,the average total nitrogen content reduced to from 0.598 g/kg 0.310 g/kg,while the average soil water content and total phosphorus increased from 12.988%to 15.439%and from 0.229 g/kg to 0.366 g/kg,respectively.

Distribution characteristics of available trace elements in soil from a reclaimed land in a mining area of north Shaanxi,China

Through field and laboratory tests we studied the temporal and spatial variation in the soil content of four available trace elements:copper(Cu),iron(Fe),manganese(Mn)and zinc(Zn),to analyze their distribution characteristics in reclaimed mining land under different reclamation *** available trace elements content varied considerably with different land reclamation *** reclamation time was helpful for the recovery of the available trace element content in the soil,and after more than eight years of soil reclamation,the content of available trace elements was closer to or greater than that in soil under natural *** treatment measures significantly influenced the content and distribution of available trace elements in the soil,and reasonable artificial treatments,including covering the soil and growing shrubs and herbaceous plants,increased the content of available trace elements.

Transgenic restorer rice line T1c-19 with stacked cry1C*/bar genes has low weediness potential without selection pressure

Stacked（insect and herbicide resistant） transgenic rice T1c-19 with cry1C＊/bar genes, its receptor rice Minghui 63（herein MH63） and a local two-line hybrid indica rice Fengliangyou Xiang 1（used as a control） were compared for agronomic performance under field conditions without the relevant selection pressures. Agronomic traits（plant height, tiller number, and aboveground dry biomass）, reproductive ability（pollen viability, panicle length, and filled grain number of main panicles, seed set, and grain yield）, and weediness characteristics（seed shattering, seed overwintering ability, and volunteer seedling recruitment） were used to assess the potential weediness without selection pressure of stacked transgene rice T1c-19. In wet direct-seeded and transplanted rice fields, T1c-19 and its receptor MH63 performed similarly regarding vegetative growth and reproductive ability, but both of them were significantly inferior to the control. T1c-19 did not display weed characteristics; it had weak overwintering ability, low seed shattering and failed to establish volunteers. Exogenous insect and herbicide resistance genes did not confer competitive advantage to transgenic rice T1c-19 grown in the field without the relevant selection pressures.

Modeling the frictional torque of a dry-lubricated tapered roller bearing considering the roller skewing

In this paper, an equation for the calculation of the frictional torque of a dry-lubricated tapered roller bearing(TRB) is provided in which the effect of the roller skewing is emphasized. Calculations were performed to investigate the effect of the roller skewing on the torque of dry-lubricated TRB for two representative preload methods, that is, axial force preload and axial displacement preload. The results show that a proper roller skewing angle under axial force preload benefits the reduction of the TRB torque. However, the roller skewing angle should not exceed a certain critical value;otherwise, it will cause a steep rise in the TRB torque. Finally, the critical value of the roller skewing angle as a function of the friction coefficient and cage pocket clearance is presented. The developed torque model provides a tool for the internal design and torque optimization of dry-lubricated TRBs.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENVIRONMENT CHANGE AND SE MONSOON STRENGTH, DAIHAI LAKE, INNER MONGOLIA

Daihai Lake, located in NW margin of SE monsoon region, belongs to the sensitive area for climatic fluctuation. The analysis of continuous sedimentary column with an age of 100 ka indicates that there exists the different quasiperiodicity in time scales for monsoon shift. The climatic fluctuation in the Daihai Basin shows all along the alternation of cold and dry with a warm and wet climatic pattern, suggesting that the strength and drift of SE monsoon play a controllable role in the climatic change.

Rice plant growth and yield: foliar application of plasma activated water

Plasma activated water(PAW)was prepared for 10 min to be applied one toﬁve times as a foliar spray to rice plants,to investigate plant growth,yield and the concentrations of total soluble protein and sugar in the rice grains *** results reveal that(1)the plant height,stem diameter,dry weight,chlorophyll and total carotene concentrations were improved by∼15%,∼25%,∼24%,∼47%and∼45%,respectively,with respect to control,(2)defense mechanisms of the plants treated with PAW were improved,(3)concentrations of total soluble protein and sugar were enhanced in the rice grains of PAW treated plants and(4)yield was increased by∼14%.

Buildup characteristics of roof pollutants in the Shanghai urban area,China

The buildup of roof pollutants in an urban area of Shanghai, China was investigated by conducting 16 experiments between November 2007 and October 2008. Concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd in runoff from three types of roof (concrete, aluminum and glass) exceeded USEPA National Recommended Water Quality Criteria. The solid/liquid partition of the selected metal elements was consistent for the three roof types: Al, Fe, Zn and Pb were present mainly in the particle-bound form, while the total loading of Cd was nearly 100% in the dissolved form. Atmospheric dry precipitation accounted for most of all pollutant loadings for all roof types, while roof material made only a minor contribution to the loadings. All pollutant accumulation rates except for COD showed a seasonal trend with peaks in spring (March^May) and winter (December^February) and troughs in summer (June^August) and autumn (September^November). Our results showed that a linear equation is the most reliable of commonly used buildup models to simulate the total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS) buildup processes on aluminum roofs and glass roofs. This study provided novel information about roof runoff in Shanghai, China, in terms of pollution status, pollution source and pollutant buildup processes, thereby aiding in rainwater utilization and non-point pollution control.

Enhanced Compliant Adhesive Design and Fabrication with Dual-Level Hierarchical Structure

Synthetic dry adhesives inspired by the nano-and micro-scale hairs found on the feet of geckos and some spiders have beendeveloped for almost a decade. Elastomeric single level micro-scale mushroom shaped fibres are currently able to function evenbetter than natural dry adhesives on smooth surfaces under normal loading. However, the adhesion of these single level syntheticdry adhesives on rough surfaces is still not optimal because of the reduced contact surface area. In nature, contact area ismaximized by hierarchically structuring different scales of fibres capable of conforming surface roughness. In this paper, weadapt the nature’s solution arid propose a novel dual-level hierarchical adhesive design using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS),which is tested under peel loading at different orientations. A negative macro-scale mold is manufactured by using a laser cutterto define holes in a Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) plate. After casting PDMS macro-scale fibres by using the obtainedPMMA mold, a previously prepared micro-fibre adhesive is bonded to the macro-scale fibre substrate. Once the bondingpolymer is cured, the micro-fibre adhesive is cut to form macro scale mushroom caps. Each macro-fibre of the resulting hierarchicaladhesive is able to conform to loads applied in different directions. The dual-level structure enhances the peel strengthon smooth surfaces compared to a single-level dry adhesive, but also weakens the shear strength of the adhesive for a given areain contact. The adhesive appears to be very performance sensitive to the specific size of the fibre tips, and experiments indicatethat designing hierarchical structures is not as simple as placing multiple scales of fibres on top of one another, but can requiresignificant design optimization to enhance the contact mechanics and adhesion strength.

Particle size distribution and characteristics of heavy metals in road-deposited sediments from Beijing Olympic Park

Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, heavy metals in road-deposited sediments（RDSs） of parks are emitted into the terrestrial, atmospheric, and water environment, and have a severe impact on residents＇ and tourists＇ health. To identify the distribution and characteristic of heavy metals in RDS and to assess the road environmental quality in Chinese parks, samples were collected from Beijing Olympic Park in the present study. The results indicated that particles with small grain size（〈150 μm） were the dominant fraction. The length of dry period was one of the main factors affecting the particle size distribution, as indicated by the variation of size fraction with the increase of dry days. The amount of heavy metal（i.e., Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd） content was the largest in particles with small size（〈150 μm） among all samples. Specifically, the percentage of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in these particles was 74.7%, 55.5%, 56.6% and 71.3%, *** metals adsorbed in sediments may mainly be contributed by road traffic emissions. The contamination levels of Pb and Cd were higher than Cu and Zn on the basis of the mean heavy metal contents. Specifically, the geoaccumulation index（I geo） decreased in the order：Cd〉Pb〉Cu〉Zn. This study analyzed the mobility of heavy metals in sediments using partial sequential extraction with the Tessier procedure. The results revealed that the apparent mobility and potential metal bioavailability of heavy metals in the sediments, based on the exchangeable and carbonate fractions, decreased in the order： Cd〉Zn≈Pb〉Cu.
