A Workable Solution for Reducing the Large Number of Vehicle and Pedestrian Accidents Occurring on a Yellow Light

Traffic intersections are incredibly dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. Statistics from both Canada and the U.S. show a high number of fatalities and serious injuries related to crashes at intersections. In Canada, during 2019, the National Collision Database shows that 28% of traffic fatalities and 42% of serious injuries occurred at intersections. Likewise, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) found that about 40% of the estimated 5,811,000 accidents in the U.S. during the year studied were intersection-related crashes. In fact, a major survey by the car insurance industry found that nearly 85% of drivers could not identify the correct action to take when approaching a yellow traffic light at an intersection. One major reason for these accidents is the “yellow light dilemma,” the ambiguous situation where a driver should stop or proceed forward when unexpectedly faced with a yellow light. This situation is even further exacerbated by the tendency of aggressive drivers to inappropriately speed up on the yellow just to get through the traffic light. A survey of Canadian drivers conducted by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation found that 9% of drivers admitted to speeding up to get through a traffic light. Another reason for these accidents is the increased danger of making a left-hand turn on yellow. According to the National Highway Traffic safety Association (NHTSA), left turns occur in approximately 22.2% of collisions—as opposed to just 1.2% for right turns. Moreover, a study by CNN found left turns are three times as likely to kill pedestrians than right turns. The reason left turns are so much more likely to cause an accident is because they take a driver against traffic and in the path of oncoming cars. Developmental exposure to heavy metals alters visually-guided behaviors in zebrafish

This laboratory-based study determined the consequences of heavy metal exposure using zebra- fish Danio rerio. Embryos were transiently exposed to environmentally-relevant concentrations of cadmium or nickel until 72 h postfertilization （hpf）, then they were returned to system water and allowed to grow until 7, 9, and 11 days postfertilization （dpf）, when they were examined morpho- logically and behaviorally. Morphological measures of notochord length, eye diameter, and inter- eye distance were not different across treatments; however, significant differences in optomotor responses were observed in treated larvae at all ages tested. These results suggest that initial de- velopmental exposure to cadmium and nickel significantly impacts visually-guided larval behavior. The absence of significant differences in gross morphology suggests that the effects of these metals are subtle and may occur at the cellular level. By using this ecologically relevant model and pollutant type, this study has broad application and implications with regard to safe levels of con- taminant in drinking water and freshwater ecosystems.

Research Developments and Prospects on Microseismic Source Location in Mines

Microseismic source location is the essential factor in microseismic monitoring technology, and its loca- tion precision has a large impact on the performance of the technique. Here, we discuss the problem of low-precision location identification for microseismic events in a mine, as may be obtained using conven-tional location methods that are based on arrival time. In this paper, microseismic location characteristics in mining are analyzed according to the characteristics of the mine＇s microseismic wavefield. We review research progress in mine-related microseismic source location methods in recent years, including the combination of the Geiger method with the linear method, combined microseismic event location method, optimization of relative location method, location method without pre-measured velocity, and location method without arrival time picking. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed, along with their feasible conditions. The influences of geophone distribution, first arrival time picking, and the velocity model on microseismic source location are analyzed, and measures are proposed to influence these factors. Approaches to solve the problem under study include adopting information fusion, combining and optimizing existing methods, and creating new methods to realize high-precision microseismic source location. Optimization of the velocity structure, along with applications of the time-reversal imaging technique, passive time-reversal mirror, and relative interferometric imag-ing, are expected to greatly improve microseismic location precision in mines. This paper also discusses the potential application of information fusion and deep learning methods in microseismic source location in mines. These new and innovative location methods for microseismic source location have extensive prospects for development.

Simulation and visualization of the displacement between CO2 and formation fluids at pore-scale levels and its application to the recovery of shale gas

This article reports recent developments and advances in the simulation of the CO2-formation fluid displacement behaviour at the pore scale of subsurface porous media. Roughly, there are three effective visualization approaches to detect and observe the CO2-formation fluid displacement mechanism at the micro-scale, namely, magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray computed tomography and fabricated micromodels, but they are not capable of investigating the dis- placement process at the nano-scale. Though a lab-on-chip approach for the direct visualization of the fluid flow behaviour in nanoscale channels has been developed using an advanced epi-fluorescence microscopy method combined with a nanofluidic chip, it is still a qualitative analysis method. The lattice Boltzmann method （LBM） can simulate the CO2 displacement processes in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional （3D） pore structure, but until now, the CO2 displace- ment mechanisms had not been thoroughly investigated and the 3D pore structure of real rock had not been directly taken into account in the simulation of the CO2 displacement process. The status of research on the applications of CO2 displacement to enhance shale gas recovery is also analyzed in this paper. The coupling of molecular dynamics and LBM in tandem is proposed to simulate the CO2-shale gas displacement process based on the 3D digital model of shale obtained from focused ion beams and scanning electron microscopy.

Then, an examination on recent research in metro engineering of the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) is also conducted,which indicates that information and automation based technologies are increasingly used in practice.

Failure mechanism and control technology of longwall coalface in large-cutting-height mining method

The stability control of longwall coalface is the key technology of large-cutting-height mining ***,a systematic study of the factors that affect coalface stability and its control technology is required in the development of large-cutting-height mining method in China. After the practical field observation and years of study,it was found that the more than 95% of failures in coalface are shear failure. The shear failure analysis model of coalface has been established,that can perform systematic study among factors such as mining height,coal mass strength,roof load,support resistance,and face flipper protecting plate horizontal force. Meanwhile,sensitivity analysis of factors influencing coalface stability showed that improving support capacity,cohesion of coal mass and decreasing roof load of coalface are the key to improve coalface stability. Numerical simulation of the factors affecting coalface stability has been performed using UDEC software and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. The coalface reinforcement technology of large-cutting-height mining method using the grouting combined with coir rope is presented. Laboratory tests have been carried out to verify its reinforcement effect and practical application has been implemented in several coal mines with good *** has now become the main technology to reduce longwall coalface failure of large-cutting-height mining method.

背景:采用骨软骨移植系统关节镜下行自体骨软骨移植术,利于骨软骨移植成活并成熟愈合,愈合时间较短,临床功能恢复好而快,是一种安全而短期即见效的临床治疗方法。目的:评价关节镜下自体骨软骨移植技术治疗股骨软骨损伤的远期临床疗效。设计、时间及地点:病例随访分析,于2002-04/2008-12在韩国首尔now医院膝关节外科中心和青岛市市立医院(中国海洋大学附属医院)完成。对象:股骨软骨Ⅳ级损伤患者34例,28例获得随访,随访时间12～48个月,男17例,女11例,其中双膝1例,平均年龄43岁。方法:采用骨软骨移植系统在关节镜下行股骨软骨Ⅳ级损伤自体骨软骨移植术。供区骨软骨移植块取自股骨髁间窝上、外侧骨软骨区,骨软骨取出器套筒要完全垂直软骨面和骨面,每个大小为7～9mm(直径)×13～15mm(深度),通过套筒把骨软骨移植块垂直骨洞植入受区-股骨软骨损伤区,使骨软骨移植块完整无间隙镶嵌于骨洞内,软骨面恰好平周围软骨面。主要观察指标:患者Lysholm评分、IKDC评价及MRI检查。结果:Lysholm评分由术前的47.6提高到术后的90.6(P<0.01),24例临床疗效为好与优。IKDS评价有26例患者术后平均5.8个月恢复到受伤前的正常生活或运动水平,1例失败由于术后早期运动所致。术后4个月ICRS评价显示受区软骨完全成熟成活,与周边正常软骨融为一体,供区表面见软骨覆盖,其中央区为正常软骨,周边区为未成熟软骨,再生的软骨与周边软骨发生愈合。12例术后1年复查了MRI,其中11例显示软骨修复良好,受区软骨厚度及MRI信号与周围软骨一样,骨质与周边骨质完全愈合,供区中央区有正常软骨生成,骨洞完全被新生成的骨质填充,其周边是厚度均一的皮质骨,中央区是密度均一的松质骨。结论:关节镜下自体骨软骨移植技术是治疗股骨髁及股骨滑车Ⅳ级软骨损伤一种安全有效的临床治疗方法,供区和受区是否能长期维持正常或接近正常的结构和功能,还需进一步长期的随访和研究。

The United States （U.S.） is facing a national opioid epidemic, and medical systems are in need of non- pharmacologic strategies that can be employed to decrease the public＇s opioid dependence. Acupuncture has emerged as a powerful, evidence-based, safe, cost-effective, and available treatment modality suitable to meeting this need. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for the management of numerous types of pain conditions, and mechanisms of action for acupuncture have been described and are understandable from biomedical, physiologic perspectives. Further, acupuncture＇s cost-effectiveness can dramatically decrease health care expenditures, both from the standpoint of treating acute pain and through avoiding addiction to opioids that requires costly care, destroys quality of life, and can lead to fatal overdose. Numerous federal regulatory agencies have advised or mandated that healthcare systems and providers offer non-pharmacologic treatment options for pain. Acupuncture stands out as the most evidence-based, immediately available choice to fulfil these calls. Acupuncture can safely, easily, and cost-effectively be incorporated into hospital settings as diverse as the emergency department, labor and delivery suites, andneonatal intensive care units to treat a variety of commonly seen pain conditions. Acupuncture is already being successfully and meaningfully utilized by the Veterans Administration and various branches of the U.S. Military, in some studies demonstrably decreasing the volume of opioids prescribed when included in care.
