Contact dermatitis （CD） is one of the most common skin diseases in industrialized countries. Chinese medicines （CMs） have been investigated worldwide as complementary and alternative medicines for corticosteroids, which are the first choice for treatment of inflammatory skin diseases owing to their favorable efficacy. This article describes the CMs that have been reported to have anti-dermatitis effects against CD in the last 20 years.

Restricted fetal growth(RFG)is a leading contributor to perinatal mortality and has been associated with gestational exposure to air pollution,such as fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5)),nitrogen dioxide(NO2),and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs).This study examines the association between trimester-specific and weekly means of air pollution throughout gestation and placental inflammatory markers at *** a prospective cohort study of 263 pregnant women in Rochester,NY,we measured interleukin-6(IL-6)and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α)in placental tissue and estimated gestational exposure to PM_(2.5)and NO_(2)using a high-resolution spatial-temporal *** to PAHs was estimated using urinary 1-hydroxypyrene(1-OHP)concentrations collected once per *** distributed lag models with a penalized spline function,each interquartile range(2.6μg/m^(3))increase in PM_(2.5)concentration during gestational weeks 6−11 was associated with decreased placental IL-6 levels(−22.2%,95%CI:−39.0%,−0.64%).Using multiple linear regression models,each interquartile range increase of 1-OHP was associated with an increase in TNF-αin the first trimester(58.5%,95%CI:20.7%,74.2%),third trimester(22.9%,95%CI:0.04%,49.5%),and entire pregnancy(29.6%,95%CI:3.9%,60.6%).Our results suggest gestational exposure to air pollution may alter the inflammatory environment of the placenta at delivery.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide,being the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of cancer-related *** incidence of HCC has been rising in the USA over the last 20 *** transplanta-tion is an optimal treatment option,as it eliminates HCC as well as the underlying liver *** Milan criteria(1 lesion greater than or equal to 2 cm and less than or equal to 5 cm,or up to 3 lesions,each greater than or equal to 1 cm and less than or equal to 3 cm)have been adopted by many transplant societies worldwide as the criteria to determine whether patients with HCC can move forward with liver ***,many believe that the Milan criteria may be too strict in regard to its size require-ments for *** has led to a number of expanded criteria for liver transplantation,concerning both overall size and number of lesions,as well as incorporation of other markers of tumor *** markers,such as alpha-fetoprotein,can also be used to follow treatment of HCC and possibly exclude patients from *** presenting beyond Milan criteria can also be down-staged with locore-gional *** response to locoregional therapy and longer wait times after locoregional therapy prior to transplant can serve as surrogate markers of tumor biology as well.

Although considered a safe modality for monitoring spinal cord function, motor evoked potentials (MEP) may cause tongue laceration in rare cases. Bite blocks are essential in order to prevent tongue and mucosal injury during monitoring with MEP, but there is no consensus on the ideal bite block to use for this purpose. Potential concerns include tongue necrosis from prolonged use of an oral airway as a hard bite block, and TMJ dysfunction caused by occlusal interference when blocks interrupt the normal occlusal surface. We had a case of tongue laceration during MEPs. Bite blocks should be placed prior to the start of monitoring to prevent teeth occlusion. Because rigid bite blocks may cause pressure injury to oropharyngeal structures soft bite blocks are recommended. The bite block needs to be placed in a way to prevent occlusion by both front teeth and molars and to keep the tongue in the middle of the mouth. Ongoing vigilance to bite block placement is strongly recommended.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma Incidence and Mortality in the USA by Sex, Age, and Race: A Nationwide Analysis of Two Decades

Background and Aims:While the incidence rates of hepa-tocellular carcinoma(HCC)are increasing,there are limited comprehensive data on demographic-specific incidence and mortality trends in the *** aimed to evaluate recent trends in HCC incidence and mortality among different de-mographic groups in the ***:Age-adjusted HCC incidence rates were calculated from the Centers for Disease Control's United States Cancer Statistics database,which combines incidence data on newly diagnosed cancer cases and covers approximately 98%of the population in the ***,age-adjusted HCC mortality rates were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics database,which offers comprehensive Cov-erage spanning nearly 100%of deaths attributed to HCC in the *** were stratified by sex,age(older[≥55 years]and younger[driven by early-stage tumors(AAPC difference=-2.65,p=0.02).There were 329,973 deaths attributed to HCC between 2000 and 2020(28.4%women).In younger adults(43,093 deaths),mortal-ity decreased in men at a greater rate than in women(AAPC difference=1.61,p=0.007).This was seen in various racial and ethnic groups,most notably in non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Natives(AAPC difference=-4.51,p=0.01).Conclusions:Nationwide USA data,coveri

Objective To explore the significance of protein kinase C (PKC) in proliferation and infiltration of eosinophils in nasal polyps. Methods With in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry staining methods,PKC,pro-apoptotic,and anti-apoptotic gene (Bax,bcl-2 ) expressions were measured in nasal polyp tissues from 26 patients and inferior turbinate mucosa tissues (ITMTs) from 20 healthy persons. The May-Grünwald-Giemsa (MGG) staining method was used to identify eosinophils. Results In eosinophils,the positive cell expressive rates of Bcl-2 mRNA and its protein were significantly higher in the group with nasal polyps than in the ITMT group ( P 0.05). There was PKC expression in the eosinophils of 26 cases of nasal polyps,but occasional PKC expression in 7 of 20 ITMT cases. In the two groups,PKC positive cell expression was significantly different,and the expression of PKC and bcl-2 mRNA as well as associated protein in eosinophils of nasal polyps showed a remarkably positive relationship ( r 1=0.0875,r 2=0.0823,P <0.01). Conclusions Increased PKC expression in eosinophils of nasal polyp tissues is closely associated with apoptosis inhibition,and it is presumed that eosinophil apoptosis inhibition in nasal polyp tissues is obtained by activation of the PKC signal transduction pathway.

Dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs) secrete neurotrophic factors which may play an important therapeutic role in neural development, maintenance and repair. To test this hypothesis, DPSCs-conditioned medium(DPSCs-CM) was collected from 72 hours serum-free DPSCs cultures. The impact of DPSCs-derived factors on PC12 survival, growth, migration and differentiation was investigated. PC12 cells were treated with nerve growth factor(NGF), DPSCs-CM or co-cultured with DPSCs using Transwell inserts for 8 days. The number of surviving cells with neurite outgrowths and the length of neurites were measured by image analysis. Immunocytochemical staining was used to evaluate the expression of neuronal markers NeuN, microtubule associated protein 2(MAP-2) and cytoskeletal marker βIII-tubulin. Gene expression levels of axonal growth-associated protein 43 and synaptic protein Synapsin-I, NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin were analysed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR). DPSCs-CM was analysed for the neurotrophic factors(NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], neurotrophin-3, and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor [GDNF]) by specific ELISAs. Specific neutralizing antibodies against the detected neurotrophic factors were used to study their exact role on PC12 neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth extension. DPSCs-CM significantly promoted cell survival and induced the neurite outgrowth confirmed by NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin immunostaining. Furthermore, DPSCsCM was significantly more effective in stimulating PC12 neurite outgrowths than live DPSCs/PC12 co-cultures over the time studied. The morphology of induced PC12 cells in DPSCs-CM was similar to NGF positive controls;however, DPSCs-CM stimulation of cell survival was significantly higher than what was seen in NGF-treated cultures. The bone marrow contains a heterogeneous milieu of cells, including macrophages, which are key cellular mediators for resolving infection and inflammation. Macrophages are most well known for their ability to phagocytose foreign bodies or apoptotic cells to maintain homeostasis; however, little is known about their function in the bone microenvironment. In the current study, we investigated the in vitro interaction of murine macrophages and bone marrow stromal cells （BMSCs）, with focus on the juxtacrine induction of IL-6 signaling and the resultant effect on BMSC migration and growth. The juxtacrine interaction of primary mouse macrophages and BMSCs activated IL-6 signaling in the co-cultures, which subsequently enhanced BMSC migration and increased BMSC numbers. BMSCs and macrophages harvested from IL-6 knockout mice revealed that IL-6 signaling was essential for enhancement of BMSC migration and increased BMSC numbers via juxtacrine interactions. BMSCs were the main contributor of IL-6 signaling~ and hence activation of the IL-6/ gp130/STAT3 pathway. Meanwhile, macrophage derived IL-6 remained important for the overall production of IL-6 protein in the co-cultures. Taken together, these findings show the function of macmphages as co-inducers of migration and growth of BMSCs, which could directly influence bone formation and turnover.

Background Patients with septic shock have a high mortality. This study used the Surviving Sepsis Campaign （SSC）database to compare characteristics, treatments and outcomes of septic shock patients diagnosed in the emergency department （ED） to patients developing septic shock on hospital floors （HF）.Methods The studied population included patients admitted to the intensive care unit （ICU） of an urban tertiary care medical center over an 18-month period. Acute physiology and chronic health evaluation （APACHE Ⅱ） scores, need for mechanical ventilation （MV）, performance on four of the SSC resuscitation bundle indicators, ICU length of stay （LOS）,hospital LOS and in-hospital mortality were *** Sixty-six ED and 27 HF septic shock patients were included in this study. Urinary tract infections （UTI） and pneumonia were the two most common sites of infection in the ED patients. The sources of infection for HF septic shock patients were fairly well distributed across etiologies. The time to achieve superior vena cava oxygen saturation （ScvO2）＞ 70% in HF patients （（10.8±9.1） hours） was longer when compared to the ED patients （（6.6±-6.1） hours）（P ＜0.05）.Hospital mortality for the ED and HF patients were 25.8% and 59.3%, respectively （P ＜0.05）. Use of MV during the first 24 hours of shock was 44% in the ED patients and 70% in the HF patients （P ＜0.05） and was linked to *** When compared to HF patients, ED septic shock patients have lower in-hospital mortality, there was less use of MV during the first 24 hours following onset of septic shock and the HF patients required a longer time to achieve target ScvO2. The need for mechanical ventilation is independently associated with increased mortality.
