Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with cardiovascular dysfunction including myocardial infarction, unstable angina, sudden cardiac death, stroke and peripheral thromboses. It has been predicted that atherosclerosis will be the primary cause of death in the world by 2020. Atherogenesis is initiated by endothelial injury due to oxidative stress associated with cardiovascular risk factors including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cigarette smoking, dyslipidemia, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The impairment of the endothelium associated with cardiovascular risk factors creates an imbalance between vasodilating and vasoconstricting factors, in particular, an increase in angiotensin Ⅱ(Ang Ⅱ) and a decrease in nitric oxide. The renin-angiotensin system(RAS), and its primary mediator Ang Ⅱ, also have a direct influence on the progression of the atherosclerotic process via effects on endothelial function, inflammation, fibrinolytic balance, and plaque stability. Anti-inflammatory agents [statins, secretory phospholipase A2 inhibitor, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 inhibitor, 5-lipoxygenase activating protein, chemokine motif ligand-2, c-c chemokine motif receptor 2 pathway inhibitors, methotrexate, IL-1 pathway inhibitor and RAS inhibitors(angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors)], Ang Ⅱ receptor blockers and ranin inhibitors may slow inflammatory processes and disease progression. Several studies in human using anti-inflammatory agents and RAS inhibitors revealed vascular benefits and reduced progression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with stable angina pectoris; decreased vascular inflammatory markers, improved common carotid intima-media thickness and plaque volume in patients with diagnosed atherosclerosis. Recent preclinical studies have demonstrated therapeutic efficacy of vitamin D analogs paricalcitol in Apo E-deficient atherosclerotic mice.

Flowering is the primary stage of the plant developmental transition and is tightly regulated by environmental factors such as light and ***,the mechanisms by which temperature signals are integrated into the photoperiodic flowering pathway are still poorly ***,we demonstrate that HOS15,which is known as a GI transcriptional repressor in the photoperiodic flowering pathway,controls flowering time in response to low ambient *** 16℃,the hos15 mutant exhibits an early flowering phenotype,and HOS15 acts upstream of photoperiodic flowering genes(GI,cO,and FT).GI protein abundance is increased in the hos15 mutant and is insensitive to the proteasome inhibitor ***,the hos15 mutant has a defect in low ambient temperature-mediated GI degradation,and HOS15 interacts with cOP1,an E3 ubiquitin ligase for GI *** analyses of the hos15 cop1 double mutant revealed that repression of flowering by HOS15 is dependent on cOP1 at 16℃.However,the HOS15-cOP1 interaction was attenuated at 16℃,and GI protein abundance was additively increased in the hos15 cop1 double mutant,indicating that HOS15 acts independently of cOP1 in GI turnover at low ambient *** study proposes that HOS15 controls GI abundance through multiple modes as an E3 ubiquitin ligase and transcriptional repressor to coordinate appropriate flowering time in response to ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and day length.

considering that the pyroligneous liquor obtained from pyrolysis of various types of biomass has antiviral activity, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial action of the methanolic fraction extracted from bamboo （Dendrocalamus asper） pyroligneous liquor in relation to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The pyroligneous liquor was recovered by laboratorial bamboo pyrolysis at 350 °c and then fractioned by liquid-liquid separation with methanol and hexane. After solvent evaporation, we collected the methanolic extract, which was later diluted in methanol and used in the diffusion disc assay of E. coli and S. aureus at concentrations of 0.125, 0.500, 0.750 and 1.000 mg. Through Gc/MS analysis, it was possible to qualitatively identify 92 chemical compounds in the methanolic fraction. Treatment with the methanolic fraction inhibited cellular growth and caused a variety of morphological variations in size as well as deformities in the bacterial cell walls, establishing an antimicrobial activity profile. This finding supports the National Policy for Incentives for Sustainable Management and cultivation of bamboo （PNMcb） and has benefits to the society and environment as a whole, as it demonstrates the possibility of adding value to a byproduct of pyrolysis.

background: Hepatitis-b (Hep-b) infection is a global public health problem of great concern which affects more than 5% of the local population in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study assessed students’ knowledge, attitude and practices towards Hepatitis b infection and vaccination at the University of health and allied sciences, Ghana. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive survey was conducted among 262 Public health students of the University of health and allied Science of the Volta region of Ghana, using a multi-stage sampling technique in selecting participants. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Data was analyzed using SPSS Version 20.1. Results: Study respondents were mostly males, forming 69.8% as against 30.2% of their female counterparts. All (262) respondents had knowledge on Hep-b infection and the availability of a vaccine for preventing Hepatitis infection. However, despite their knowledge of existence, the majority (56.9%) of the respondents felt they did not need to be protected from Hep-b infection. Majority (58.8%) of the total respondents have been vaccinated against Hep-b infection. The study identified the cost of vaccines as a major setback to non-vaccination. However, out of the 41.2% respondents who were not vaccinated against Hep b infection, majority (50.9%) of them were not willing to be vaccinated even if it was offered to them at no cost. conclusion: There was a significantly high level of knowledge on Hep-b infection and the availability of vaccine for Hep-b infection among students. However, the majority of the respondents felt they did not need to be protected from Hep-b infection. More education is needed on the importance of vaccination as an effective measure for controlling Hepatitis infection.

A number of antibiotic biosynthetic pathways were characterized in various Streptomyces species, which provide new insights about their biosynthesis, intermolecular conversion and engineering perspectives. (1) A cluster of eight reassembled genes, among 25 genes isolated from S. hygroscopicus 5008, was found to support the biosynthesis of validamycin A, an aminocyclitol antibiotic widely used to control rice sheath blight disease, in a heterologous host In vivo inactivation of a gene encoding a putative glycosyltransferase (valG), resulted in mutant strains that accumulate validoxylamine A, the precursor of validamycin A, while the normal production of validamycin A could be restored by complementation with valG A more logical biosynthetic pathway to validamycin A is now proposed. (2) For oxazolomycin, a hybrid polyketide-peptide antibiotic showing potent antitumor, anti-HIV, and limited antibacterial activities, a region of 88 kb DNA was found to harbor a complete set of genes (including NRPS, PKS, hybrid NRPS-PKS, resistance, regulatory and tailoring genes) necessary for its biosynthesis. A discrete protein (OzmM) encoding a tandem of the two ATs was found to be necessary for AT-less PKSs. (3) A model of in vivo conversion between the three major components in the polyene candicidin complex were demonstrated by the site-directed mutagenesis, with Tyr158-Phe shift of the domain KR21 and His39-Tyr shift of the domain DH18 abolished the production of component Ⅰ and Ⅵ, respectively, and combined mutagenesis of KR21 and DH18 generated a mutant solely producing component Ⅱ at significantly enhanced yield. (4) The information on the genetic and structural correlation of meilingmycin, a macrolide compound structurally similar to avermectin and milbemycin α11, was used for the targeted engineering of a mutant for the direct biosynthesis of an ivermectin analog. The perspective uses of the gene cluster for antibiotic biosynthetic pathway engineering will be presented.

The global trend toward aging populations has resulted in an increase in the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease(AD)and associated socioeconomic *** metabolism of amyloid-β(Aβ)has been proposed as a significant pathomechanism in AD,supported by results of recent clinical trials using anti-Aβ***,the cognitive benefits of the current treatments are *** etiology of AD is multifactorial,encompassing Aβand tau accumulation,neuroinflammation,demyelination,vascular dysfunction,and comorbidities,which collectively lead to widespread neurodegeneration in the brain and cognitive ***,solely removing Aβfrom the brain may be insufficient to combat neurodegeneration and preserve *** attain effective treatment for AD,it is necessary to(1)conduct extensive research on various mechanisms that cause neurodegeneration,including advances in neuroimaging techniques for earlier detection and a more precise characterization of molecular events at scales ranging from cellular to the full system level;(2)identify neuroprotective intervention targets against different neurodegeneration mechanisms;and(3)discover novel and optimal combinations of neuroprotective intervention strategies to maintain cognitive function in AD *** Alzheimer's Disease Neuroprotection Research Initiative's objective is to facilitate coordinated,multidisciplinary efforts to develop systemic neuroprotective strategies to combat *** aim is to achieve mitigation of the full spectrum of pathological processes underlying AD,with the goal of halting or even reversing cognitive decline.
