A comparative study of the pore characteristics and phenol adsorption performance of activated carbons prepared from oil-palm shell wastes by steam and combined steam-chemical activation

Oil-palm shell wastes were successfully converted into useful activated carbons in a systematic and novel approach by optimizing the pyrolysis conditions and subsequent steam activation conditions to maximize the BET surface *** optimal activation conditions were a steam flow rate of 1.13 kg/h,hold time of 1.5 h and temperature of 950℃,yielding BET areas of 1432.94 and 1382.95 m^(2)/g for nitrogen-pyrolyzed and vacuumpyrolyzed chars,*** steam-chemical activation,one-step activation of oil-palm shell in steam with potassium carbonate(K_(2)CO_(3)),sodium carbonate(Na_(2)CO_(3))or potassium chloride(KCl)was conducted,resulting in BET area output order of shell/K_(2)CO_(3)(710.56 m^(2)/g)>shell/KCl(498.55 m^(2)/g)>shell(366.7 m^(2)/g)>shell/Na_(2)CO_(3)(326.62 m^(2)/g).This study reported the first use of KCl and Na_(2)CO_(3)as chemical reagents in one-step steam-chemical activation of ***-activated carbon exhibited retardation of tar formation property,resulting in better pore development than pure steam activated *** adsorption of activated carbon is not only a function of the BET surface area but also the type of pyrolysis used prior to physical *** carbon(BET area of 1192.29 m^(2)/g)pyrolyzed under vacuum could adsorb 87%more phenol than that pyrolyzed in nitrogen flow which had a higher BET area of 1432.94 m^(2)/*** adsorption capacities of activated carbons are:shell pyrolyzed under vacuum(275.5 mg/g)>shell pyrolyzed in N_(2)flow(147.1 mg/g)>shell/K_(2)CO_(3)(145.7 mg/g)>shell without pyrolysis(12.1 mg/g).These activated carbons would be highly suitable in industry processes to remove phenolic contaminants.

Background: The mechanisms responsible for impaired cardiovascular hemodynamics during exercise among persons with milder forms of hypertension are not well documented. We examined the relationship of oxygen pulse during exercise, a correlate of stroke volume, with echocardiographic indices of resting left ventricular function to determine whether abnormal contractility and relaxation are related to abnormal cardiovascular dynamics during exercise among such persons. Methods: Subjects were 44 men and 55 women ages 55 to 75 years with mild hypertension but who were otherwise healthy. Resting left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions were assessed with 2-dimensional Doppler echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging. Oxygen pulse(millimeters per beat)at rest and during multistage treadmill testing was derived from measurements of oxygen consumption and heart rate. The slope of oxygen pulse between successive exercise stages was calculated. Results: After a steep rise in oxygen pulse from rest to stage 1 of exercise, a markedly diminished oxygen pulse slope was seen between subsequent exercise stages. In stepwise regression analysis, the increase in the slope of oxygen pulse from rest to stage 1 was explained by a greater lean body mass(57% , P< .001)and a larger left atrial size(2% , P< .001). After exercise stage 1, the increase in the slope of oxygen pulse was explained by sex(24% , P< .001), higher mitral E/A ratio(6% , P< .001), and higher mitral annular systolic velocity(6% , P< .001). Conclusions: These results suggest that a blunted oxygen pulse response to exercise among older persons with milder forms of hypertension may reflect impaired left ventricular stroke volume changes during exercise secondary to subtle abnormalities in both systolic and diastolic left ventricular functions.

LiNi_(0.5)Mn_(1.5)O_(4)(LNMO)with a spinel crystal structure presents a compelling avenue towards the development of economic cobalt-free and high voltage(~5 V)lithium-ion ***,the elevated operational voltage of LNMO gives rise to pronounced interfacial interactions between the distorted surface lattices characterized by Jahn-Teller(J-T)distortions and the electrolyte ***,a localized crystallized coherent LaNiO_(3) and surface passivated Li_(3)PO_(4) layer is deposited on LNMO via a one-step calcination *** evidenced by transmission electron microscopy(TEM),time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry(ToF-SIMS)and density functional theory(DFT)calculation,the epitaxial growth of LaNiO_(3) along the LNMO lattice can effectively stabilize the structure and inhibit irreversible phase transitions,and the Li_(3)PO_(4) surface coating can prevent the chemical reaction between HF and transition metals without sacrificing the electrochemical *** addition,the ionic conductive Li_(3)PO_(4) and atomic wetting inter-layer enables fast charge transfer transport ***,the LNMO material enabled by the lattice bonding and surface passivating features,demonstrates high performance at high current densities and good capacity retention during long-term *** rational design of interface coherent engineering and surface coating layers of the LNMO cathode material offers a new perspective for the practical application of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.

Best management practices to reduce soil erosion and change water balance components in watersheds under grain and dairy production

Soil erosion and sedimentation are among the most serious global environmental *** and water conservation measures have been proven effective ways to reduce soil *** objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of three approaches of soil and water conservation measures(soil management,vegetative measures,and structural practices)on soil erosion and water balance of two paired agricultural watersheds located in Southern *** and sediment monitoring was carried out from 2016 to 2019 in the two small paired agricultural watersheds;called North watershed(NW)and South watershed(SW).Modeling using Soil&Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was performed to simulate individual(nine scenarios)and combined(four scenarios)best management practices(BMPs),by including the three *** the nine individual BMP scenarios,the most effective in reducing soil erosion was crop rotation and cover crop(sediment yield,SY,reduction of 38.4 for NW,and 28.8%for SW).Among the four combined scenarios,the association of all conservation approaches was the most effective in reducing soil erosion(SY reduction of 46 for NW,and 41.5%for SW),followed by the vegetative measures scenario(SY reduction of 43.5 and 34.1%for NW and SW).All combined scenarios increased infiltration and subsurface water components,and decreased surface *** findings of this study can help farmers and policymakers choosing appropriate BMPs to reduce current soil erosion problems and promote water and soil conservation.

Genetic Characterization of Indigenous Rice Varieties in eastern Himalayan Region of Northeast India

The eastern Himalayan region of Northeast （NE） India is home to a large number of indigenous rice varieties, which are traditionally classified as Oryza sativa subspecies indica, japonica or intermediate types. The classification based on traditional Cheng’s index is often inconclusive due to phenotypic plasticity of morphological characters, which are influenced by environmental conditions. We used molecular markers specific for indica and japonica subspecies to assess the degree of genetic relatedness of indigenous rice varieties in NE India. The results revealed that majority of upland （jum） and glutinous rice varieties, traditionally considered as japonica, were genetically close to the subspecies indica. All varieties of boro ecotype were found to be indica type, and only a few varieties cultivated in lowland and upland areas were japonica type. Some of the lowland varieties of the sali ecotype were intermediate between indica and japonica, and they showed a closer genetic affinity to O. rufipogon.

Background: Because of potential side effects and logistical difficulty of titrating medications, outpatients with congestive heart failure rarely receive appropriate doses of carvedilol or other β-blockers. To address these obstacles, we studied if an automated telemedicine system named TeleWatch(TW) could facilitate carvedilol titration in outpatients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Methods: Forty-nine patients with New York Heart Association class II and III left ventricular systolic dysfunction, who were tolerating appropriate afterload-reducing therapy and not receiving β-blockers, were enrolled into a 3-month study. Patients were randomized to have clinic-only(CO)(n=24) carvedilol titration or titrations which combined clinic visits with TW monitoring(n=25). All patients were seen in clinic biweekly, and those in the TW group were remotely monitored daily. Using a predefined algorithm, patients in the CO and TW groups were eligible for carvedilol titration on a biweekly or weekly basis, respectively, by physicians blinded to group assignment. Results: There was no statistical difference in the mean final daily dose of carvedilol between the CO and TW groups(39.4 vs 36.2 mg/d, P=.52). Because remote telemedicine titrations were as successful as titrations in the clinic, the time to reach the final dose of carvedilol was significantly shorter in the TW group(33.6 vs 63.7 days, P< .0001). There were 5 serious adverse events in the study, 4 of which were in the TW group(P=.29); however, TW prospectively detected 2 adverse events. Conclusions: Remote monitoring with an automated telemedicine system can successfully facilitate titration of carvedilol in outpatients with New York Heart Association class II and III congestive heart failure.

Gain calculation of a free-electron laser operating with a non-uniform ion-channel guide

Amplification of an electromagnetic wave by a free electron laser （FEL） with a helical wiggler and an ion channel with a periodically varying ion density is examined. The relativistic equation of motion for a single electron in the combined wiggler and the periodic ionbchannel fields is solved and the classes of possible trajectories in this configuration are discussed. The gain equation for the FEL in the low-gain-per-pass lirnit is obtained by adding the effect of the periodic ion channel. Numerical calculation is employed to analyse the gain induced by the effects of the non-uniform ion density. The variation of gain with ion-channel density is demonstrated. It is shown that there is a gain enhancement for group I orbits in the presence of a non-uniform ion-channel but not in a uniform one. It is also shown that periodic ion-channel guiding is used to reach the maximum peak gain in a low ion-channel frequency （low ion density）.

Na_2BaMg(PO_4 )_2:synthesis, crystal structure and europium photoluminescence properties

Na2BaMg（PO4）2 was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis （DTA）, 31p NMR spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. This compound crystallized in the P3 ml space group of the trigonal system with the parameters of equivalent hexagonal cell a=0.5305（1） nm and c=0.6986（3） nm. The structure showed a perfect isotipysm with the mineral glaserite KaNa（SO4）2. Thus, it exhibited a lamellar framework which could be described as the stacking along the [001] direc- tion of [MgP2O84-]∞ layers of comer sharing MgO6 polyhedra and PO4 tetrahedra. The Ba2＋ cations were located within the interlayer space, while the Na＋ ones were found in large cavities bound to the layers. The DTA analysis showed that this compound melt con- gruently at 1385 K. The 31p NMR spectrum was consistent with the presence of a single phosphorus site in the structure. Optical properties were investigated for the 5% doped Eu3＋ and Eu2＋ phases. The trivalent europium was used as a local probe, replacing bar- ium while the divalent europium was used to examine whether this material could be used as an optical applications.
