Ripple Tectonics—When Subduction Is Interrupted

Subduction plays a fundamental role in plate tectonics and is a significant factor in modifying the structure and topography of the Earth. It is dr.ven by convection forces that change over a >100 Myr time scale. However, when an oceanic plateau approaches, it plugs the subduction, and causes slab necking and tearing. This abrupt change may trigger a series of geodynamic (tectonic, volcanic) and sedimentary responses recorded across the convergence boundary and its surrounding regions by synchronous structural modifications. We suggest that a large enough triggering event may lead to a ripple tectonic effect that propagates outwards while speeding up the yielding of localized stress states that otherwise would not reach their threshold. The ripple effect facilitates tectonic, volcanic, and structural events worldwide that are seemingly unrelated. When the world’s largest oceanic plateau, Ontong Java Plateau (OJP), choked the Pacific-Australian convergence zone at ~6 Myr ago, it induced kinematic modifications throughout the Pacific region and along its plate margins. Other, seemingly unrelated, short-lived modifications were recorded worldwide during that time window. These modifications changed the rotation of the entire Pacific plate, which occupies ~20% of the Earth’s surface. In addition, the Scotia Sea spreading stopped, global volcanism increased, the Strait of Gibraltar closed, and the Mediterranean Sea dr.ed up and induced the Messinian salinity crisis. In this paper, we attribute these and many other synchronous events to a new “ripple tectonics” mechanism. We suggest that the OJPincipient collision triggered the Miocene-Pliocene transition. Similarly, we suggest that innovative GPS-based studies conducted today may seek the connectivity between tectonic, seismic, and volcanic events worldwide.

Arctic Alaska is a ＇suspect＇ terrane that encompasses approximately 20%of Alaska,stretching from the southern Brooks Range all the way to the continental shelves of the Chukchi and Beaufort *** the origin and subsequent travels of this large crustal fragment are debated among geologists,most researchers agree upon its composite nature and exotic *** constrain the early geological history of this terrane,we describe a recent expedition to the Doonerak fenster of the central Brooks *** area has long been regarded as a key locality for understanding the structural evolution of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic Brooks Range orogen;however,our target was different：a unique sequence of volcanic and siliciclastic rocks（Apoon assemblage） exposed beneath a profound pre-Mississippian unconformity,which we argue is of key importance to understanding the early Paleozoic tectonic history of northern Alaska and the greater Arctic.

Estimation of Ground Vertical Displacement in Landslide Prone Areas Using PS-InSAR. A Case Study of Bududa, Uganda

Estimation of ground displacement in landslide susceptible regions is very critical to understanding how landslides develop. The knowledge of ground displacement rates and magnitudes helps plan for the safety of the people and infrastructure. The early detection of landslides in Bududa is still a challenge due to the limited technology, hard to access, and a need for an affordable technique that can monitor a wide area continuously. In recent studies, the use of Persistent Scatterer Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) has provided vital information on landslide monitoring through the measurement of ground displacement. In this study, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) band C series of Sentinel 1-A and 1-B Satellite images were acquired between 2019 and 2020 along ascending and descending orbit paths. The Line of Sight Sight (LOS) displacement was determined for both satellite tracks, and then the LOS displacement was projected to the vertical direction. The PS-InSAR derived vertical displacement was then compared with GPS vertical displacement magnitudes over three GPS stations in the area. It was observed that vertical displacement velocity reached 20 cm/yr in Mountain Elgon. This displacement rate showed that there are points in the region that are highly unstable. The displacement velocity and magnitude in Bududa reached 6 cm/yr and 13 cm in two years. This rate and magnitude showed that Bududa is highly unstable compared with displacement velocities and magnitudes in landslide susceptible areas globally. The displacement was generally subsidence over the observation period. The vertical displacement estimated by PS-InSAR was comparable with GPS based on the estimated RMSE. Landslides are a frequent phenomenon on mountain Elgon, particularly in Bududa district on the SW side of this extinct shield volcano. Landslides have led to the destruction of property and loss of life we, therefore, need to monitor them. Monitoring how landslides build-up makes it possible to timely evacuate people and build barriers to protect property against damage by landslides. Residents in Bududa have reported cracks developing in the ground and houses. These cracks continue to grow, suggesting a future catastrophic event. Such an event may resemble the 2010 landslide in Bududa, which killed approximately 450 people and destroyed much property. In order to mitigate the consequences of a new landslide as much as possible, we monitored ground motion in Bududa in eleven stations from June 2018 to June 2019. Six-hour session GPS observations were made, and deformation was determined over the observation period, June to September 2018, September to November 2018, November 2018 to February 2019 and February to June 2019. A congruency test was performed to determine how significant the deformation was. It appeared that the ground deformation differed largely at various monitored stations, ranging from 0.004 to 0.076 m, 0.001 to 0.067 m and 0 to 0.078 m in the East, North and vertical directions respectively. The values indicate that most slopes in the district are unstable, particularly in the wet seasons, which implies that future landslides pose a high risk for society.

Using e^(+)e^(−)annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb^(−1)taken at the center-of-mass energy√s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector,a joint amplitude analysis is performed on the decays D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η).The fit fractions of individual components are obtained,and large interferences among the dominant components of the decays D^(0)→a_(1)(1260)π,D^(0)→π(1300)π,D^(0)→ρ(770)ρ(770),and D^(0)→2(ππ)_(S)are observed in both *** the obtained amplitude model,the CP-even fractions of D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η)are determined to be(75.2±1.1_(stat).±1.5_(syst.))%and(68.9±1.5_(stat).±2.4_(syst.))%,*** branching fractions of D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η)are measured to be(0.688±0.010_(stat.)±0.010_(syst.))%and(0.951±0.025_(stat.)±0.021_(syst.))%,*** amplitude analysis provides an important model for the binning strategy in measuring the strong phase parameters of D^(0)→4πwhen used to determine the CKM angleγ(ϕ_(3))via the B^(−)→DK^(−)decay.

The number ofψ(3686)events collected by the BESⅢdetector during the 2021 run period is determined to be(2259.3±11.1)×10~6 by counting inclusiveψ(3686)hadr.nic *** uncertainty is systematic and the statistical uncertainty is ***,the numbers ofψ(3686)events collected during the 2009 and 2012run periods are updated to be(107.7±0.6)×10~6 and(345.4±2.6)×10~6,*** numbers are consistent with the previous measurements within one standard *** total number ofψ(3686)events in the three data samples is(2712.4±14.3)×10~6.

We present a measurement of the integrated luminosity of e^(+)e^(-)collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at a center-of-mass energy of Ecm=3.773 *** integrated luminosities of the datasets taken from December 2021 to June 2022,from November 2022 to June 2023,and from October 2023 to February 2024 were determined to be 4.995±0.019 fb^(-1),8.157±0.031 fb^(-1),and 4.191±0.016 fb^(-1),respectively,by analyzing large angle Bhabha scattering *** uncertainties are dominated by systematic effects,and the statistical uncertainties are *** results provide essential input for future analyses and precision measurements.
