AIM: To investigate the cytoprotective effects in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, we developed a new formulation of hyaluronic acid(HA) and sphingosine ***: We divided Sprague-Dawley rats into 4 groups: control, HA, sphingosine 1-phosphate(S1P), and HA-S1 P. After the administration of each agent, we subjected the rat livers to total ischemia followed by reperfusion. After reperfusion, we performed the following investigations: alanine aminotransferase(ALT), histological findings, Td T-mediated d UTP-biotin nick end labeling(TUNEL) staining, and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). We also investigated the expressionof proteins associated with apoptosis, hepatoprotection, and S1 P accumulation. RESULTS: S1 P accumulated in the HA-S1 P group livers more than S1 P group livers. Serum ALT levels, TUNEL-positive hepatocytes, and expression of cleaved caspase-3 expression, were significantly decreased in the HA-S1 P group. TEM revealed that the liver sinusoidal endothelial cell(LSEC) lining was preserved in the HA-S1 P group. Moreover, the HA-S1 P group showed a greater increase in the HO-1 protein levels compared to the S1 P ***: Our results suggest that HA-S1 P exhibits cytoprotective effects in the liver through the inhibition of LSEC apoptosis. HA-S1 P is an effective agent for hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury.

The fibrous epulis, a common tumor-like lesion of the gingiva, appears in the interdental papilla as a result of local irritation. Lesions are asymptomatic and have a variable growth rate. A 75-year-old woman was referred for the evaluation of a large painless gingival mass. It had started 10 years back and has been increasing in size the last year. No bone involvement was noted. The tumor was totally removed by excision with surgical scalpel under local anesthesia without teeth extraction. The microscopic findings were suggestive of a fibrous epulis. Differential diagnosis, clinical considerations and factors to prevent recurrence are discussed.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of Guijiajiao(Colla Carapacis et Plastri, CCP), the glue of tortoise shell, on bone regeneration in zebrafish and male Wistar ***: In this study, we applied in vitro and in vivo models, tissue section analysis, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction to assess the effects of CCP on bone repair. MG-63 cells were used in alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and mineralization assays. Zebrafish and male Wistar rats were used to evaluate the effects of CCP on bone repair in ***: A simple preparation of CCP promoted osteogenesis in vivo and in vitro, and promoted MG-63 cell proliferation as well as ALP activity and mineralization. In addition, CCP activated Akt and extracellular signaling-regulated kinase pathways and significantly increased the expression of ossification-related genes and proteins such as runt-related transcription factor-2, osteocalcin, and osteopontin. The in vivo results revealed promotion of osteogenesis by immersing zebrafish in CCP for 72 *** oral dose of 1.25 g/kg CCP significantly improved skull defects in rats, which was accompanied by an increase in serum ALP ***: One of the ingredients of Guilu Erxianjiao(tortoise shell and deer horn formula) pro-vides a practical alternative therapy for bone regeneration.

Childhood survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are increased risk of several chronic complications, such as second cancers, pulmonary, metabolic complications and cardiovascular disease. Obesity and metabolic syndrome is one of the most common treatment related complication in children surviving cancer, which concurs with our nations childhood epidemic [1-3] Recent research has identified the role of genetics in the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome in childhood survivors of ALL. Growth hormone deficiency, Leptin regulation, fat mass obesity (FTO) gene and the insulin resistant ENPP1 variants disorders has been associated adverse effects of chemotherapeutic treatment and the cause of clinical manifestations of metabolic syndrome [4-8]. The illumination of the role of genetic variants can shed insights into obesity within high risk population, as well as, a target to prevent disease.
