The Iberian hare(Lepus granatensis)is a widely distributed endemic species in the Iberian *** improve our knowledge of its population dynamics,the relative abundance and population trends of the Iberian hare were studied in the autumns of 1995-2012 in a protected area(doñana National Park)by spotlighting in 2 different habitats:marshland and *** average relative abundance was 0.38 hare/km(SD=0.63)in the marshland and 3.6 hares/km(SD=4.09)in *** Iberian hare population exhibited local interannual fluctuations and a negative population trend during the study period(1995-2012).The results suggest that its populations are in *** flooding of parts of the marshland in June,July and October favor hare abundance in the *** abundance in the marshland increases as the flooded surface area increases in *** effects are more pronounced if the rains are early(October)and partially flood the *** contrast,when marsh grasses and graminoids are very high and thick(as measured using the aerial herbaceous biomass[biomass marshland]as a proxy),the abundance of hares decreases dramatically as does the area of the marsh that is flooded(in November).

Porphyrins are pigments produced in most animal cells during the synthesis of heme,but their importance for external coloration is ***(Order Strigiformes)are among the few animals that accumulate porphyrins in the integument,where it could serve as a means of *** we hypothesized that the porphyrin content of feathers may depend on body condition and breeding site quality in Eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo)fledglings and,thus,constitute amplifiers of the quality of the area where they are *** high-performance liquid chromatography,we found 2 porphyrins(protoporphyrin IX and coproporphyrin III)in the body feathers of 19 eagle owl fledglings from 7 breeding *** III,but not protoporphyrin IX feather concentration,was positively associated with the body mass of fledglings and with the quality of the breeding sites where they were reared with respect to food quality and *** coproporphyrin III is produced under oxidative stress,we suggest that good breeding sites may lead to fledglings in good ***,in turn,may make fledglings induce a certain level of free radical and coproporphyrin III production to signal to conspecifics their site-mediated capacity to cope with oxidative *** is the first time that porphyrin content in the integument has been found to be related to individual quality,opening a new scenario for studying evolution of animal coloration.

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the viable solutions to alleviate the global warming. However, the limited utilization of biomass majorly focused on cellulose and hemicellulose restricts the economic and environmental feasibilities. To cope with this issue, we proposed an integrated process of co-producing 1,6-hexanediol(1,6-Hdo) with tetrahydrofuran and adipic acid from biomass, referred to as Strategy A. To compare the impacts of lignin upgrading and feedstock, Strategy B, which co-produces tetrahydrofuran alone, and Strategy C, which is the traditional route to produce 1,6-Hdo from fossil fuels, were used. Heat networks are also designed to reduce operating costs and indirect carbon emissions due to energy consumption, saving 87% and 83% of the heat and cooling requirements, respectively, in Strategy A. The market competitiveness of Strategy A was evaluated by determining the minimum selling price through techno-economic analysis, and sustainability was thoroughly investigated by quantifying the environmental impacts through both midpoint and endpoint life-cycle assessments(LCAs).Strategy A was found to be the most favorable both economically(USRDSCHARdoLLAR3,402/ton) and environmentally(-26.9 kg CO_(2)eq.). This indicates that lignin valorization is not only economically but also environmentally preferred. Finally, changes in economic and environmental feasibilities depending on economic, process, and environmental parameters were investigated using sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. The results of these analyses provide valuable insight into bio-based chemical production.

Aims a key idea in plant community ecology is that the identity of the limiting resource shifts from soil nutrients in low productivity sites to light in high productivity *** idea,and its implications for plant community structure,has been tested many times in artificial productivity gradients(fertilization studies),but whether it applies to natural productivity gradients is *** To test whether seedling light limitation would increase across a natural productivity gradient,I conducted a cross-site field experi-ment in southwest michigan,USA.A each of six old fields natu-rally varying in productivity,I exposed transplanted seedlings of big bluestem(Andropogon gerardii)to a light addition(tie-back)treat-ment that increased light availability and measured their biomass after one and two growing *** Findingsseedlings responded positively to the tie-back treatment,but positive responses did not increase across the natural productivity *** results suggest that although light does limit seedling establishment,the strength of light limitation does not depend on variation in productivity in natural ***,light limitation interacted with a variety of site differences to determine *** the general principle that light limitation increases with productivity is well established,these results indicate that it may not always occur in natural systems.
