The Linz-Donawitz（LD） steelmaking process produces LD slag at a rate of about 125 kg/t. After metallic scrap recovery, the non-metallic LD slag is rejected because its physical/chemical properties are unsuitable for recycling. X-ray diffraction（XRD） studies have indicated that non-metallic LD slag contains a substantial quantity of mineral phases such as di- and tricalcium silicates. The availability of these mineral phases indicates that LD slag can be recycled by iron（Fe）-ore sintering. However, the presence of 1.2wt% phosphorus（P） in the slag renders the material unsuitable for sintering operations. Electron probe microscopic analysis（EPMA） studies indicated concentration of phosphorus in dicalcium silicate phase as calcium phosphate. The Fe-bearing phases（i.e., wustite and dicalcium ferrite） showed comparatively lower concentrations of P compared with other phases in the slag. Attempts were made to lower the P content of LD slag by adopting various beneficiation techniques. Dry high-intensity magnetic separation and jigging were performed on as-received samples with particle sizes of 6 and 3 mm. Spiral separation was conducted using samples ground to sizes of less than 1 and 0.5 mm. Among these studies, grinding to 0.5 mm followed by spiral concentration demonstrated the best results, yielding a concentrate with about 0.75wt% P and 45wt% Fe.

Statistical manipulation of material data was conducted for probabilistic life assessment or risk-based design and maintenance for high temperature components of power plants. To obtain the statistical distribution of material properties, dominant parameters affecting material properties are introduced into normalization of statistical variables. Those parameters are hardness, chemical composition, characteristic micro structural features and so on. Creep and fatigue properties are expressed by normalized parameters and the unified statistical distributions are obtained. These probability distribution functions show good coincidence statistically with the field database of steam turbine components. It was concluded that the unified statistical baseline approach is useful for the risk management of components in power plants.

Objective: Each year 45 million surgical procedures are performed in the United States, and a significant number of these are performed on hypothyroid patients. Little guidance is available to determine the postoperative risk to these subjects. We hypothesized that new surgical techniques and modern anesthesia would lead to no differences in outcome between hypothyroid patients and euthyroid controls. Methods: We queried surgical databases in our health system for patients who underwent an operative procedure between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015 with a TSH > 10 mcU/mL or a FT4 Results: We identified 29 hypothyroid patients. The LOS was significantly longer for the hypothyroid patients compared to the predicted LOS (14.4 vs 6.7 days, P Conclusions: In contrast to our initial hypothesis, hypothyroidism is associated with a 2-fold longer LOS following surgery. Hypothyroidism continues to place patients at increased surgical risk.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is a destructive inflammatory disease of the gallbladder that can mimic gallbladder carcinoma. METHODS: We present the case of a 35-year-old Hispanic male complaining of right upper quadrant pain and jaundice for 2 months prior to admission. He denied a history of fever, nausea/ vomiting, and weight loss. The past medical history was relevant only for diabetes. He had no previous history of jaundice or previous operations. RESULTS: CA19-9 was slightly elevated (52 U/mL). Abdominal ultrasonography showed an irregular thickening of the gallbladder wall and no gallstones were detected. CT scan also revealed an irregular thickening of the wall of the gallbladder body suggestive of malignancy. At laparotomy, the mass was adherent to the duodenum and colon, and although the frozen section biopsy was negative, the intraoperative findings were suggestive of malignancy, and the patient underwent left liver trisegmentectomy, resection of the common bile duct and Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy. Pathological examination unexpectedly revealed XGC without malignancy. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative and intraoperative differential diagnosis of XGC from gallbladder carcinoma remains a challenge when it is associated with inflammatory involvement of surrounding tissues. Since gallbladder carcinoma and XGC may coexist, radical resection is justified when malignancy cannot be completely ruled out.

Risk factors for complications associated with upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies

AIM: To investigate predictive risk factors associated with complications in the endoscopic removal of foreign bodies from the upper gastrointestinal ***: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 194 patients with a diagnosis of foreign body impaction in the upper gastrointestinal tract,confirmed by endoscopy,at two university hospital in South *** demographic data,including age,gender,intention to ingestion,symptoms at admission,and comorbidities,were *** features of the foreign bodies,such as type,size,sharpness of edges,number,and location,were *** data those were analyzed included duration of foreign body impaction,duration of endoscopic performance,endoscopic device,days of hospitalization,complication rate,30-d mortality rate,and the number of operationsrelated to foreign body ***: The types of upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies included fish bones,drugs,shells,meat,metal,and animal *** locations of impacted foreign bodies were the upper esophagus(57.2%),mid esophagus(28.4%),stomach(10.8%),and lower esophagus(3.6%).The median size of the foreign bodies was 26.2 ± 16.7 *** 194 patients,endoscopic removal was achieved in 189,and complications developed in 51 patients(26.9%).Significant complications associated with foreign body impaction and removal included deep lacerations with minor bleeding(n = 31,16%),ulcer(n = 11,5.7%),perforation(n = 3,1.5%),and abscess(n = 1,0.5%).Four patients underwent operations because of incomplete endoscopic foreign body *** multivariate analyses,risk factors for endoscopic complications and failure were sharpness(HR = 2.48,95%CI: 1.07-5.72; P = 0.034) and a greater than 12-h duration of impaction(HR = 2.42,95%CI: 1.12-5.25,P = 0.025).CONCLUSION: In cases of longer than 12 h since foreign body ingestion or sharp-pointed objects,rapid endoscopic intervention should be provided in patients with ingested foreign bodies.

This paper proposes a novel Hamiltonian servo system, a combined modeling framework for control and estimation of a large team/fleet of autonomous robotic vehicles. The Hamiltonian servo framework represents high-dimensional, nonlinear and non-Gaussian generalization of the classical Kalman servo system. After defining the Kalman servo as a motivation, we define the affine Hamiltonian neural network for adaptive nonlinear control of a team of UGVs in continuous time. We then define a high-dimensional Bayesian particle filter for estimation of a team of UGVs in discrete time. Finally, we formulate a hybrid Hamiltonian servo system by combining the continuous-time control and the discrete-time estimation into a coherent framework that works like a predictor-corrector system.

This paper introduces the concept and motivates the use of finite-interval based measures for physically realizable and measurable quantities, which we call -measures. We demonstrate the utility and power of -measures by illustrating their use in an interval-based analysis of a prototypical Bell’s inequality in the measurement of the polarization states of an entangled pair of photons. We show that the use of finite intervals in place of real-numbered values in the Bell inequality leads to reduced violations. We demonstrate that, under some conditions, an interval-based but otherwise classically calculated probability measure can be made to arbitrarily closely approximate its quantal counterpart. More generally, we claim by heuristic arguments and by formal analogy with finite-state machines that -measures can provide a more accurate model of both classical and quantal physical property values than point-like, real numbers—as originally proposed by Tuero Sunaga in 1958.
