Electromagnetic design and performance of conduction cooled superconducting magnet for spoke resonator cryomodule for Proton Improvement Plan(PIP)-II

The Proton Improvement Plan(PIP)-II project is part of Fermilab’s upgrade of its proton accelerator complex,to provide a powerful,high-intensity proton beam to the laboratory’s upcoming research *** project includes an 800 MeV superconducting(SC)linear accelerator(linac),with five flavours of cavities and *** medium energy section of the linac contains two types of superconducting Single Spoke Resonator(SSR)RF cavities(SSR1 and SSR2),which are interleaved with strong solenoid focusing lenses.A unified design of the solenoid has been developed,with one solenoid design satisfying both SSR1 and SSR2 *** integral focusing strength requirement of 4.5 T^(2)m with a full width half maximum(FWHM)of 180 mm indicates the peak field strength∼6.8 T in the magnet aperture,necessitating a superconducting design within the limits of NbTi as magnet wire *** are complex combined units that include one focusing solenoid with bucking coils to minimize fringe fields and four corrector coils each,with independent current leads to produce dipole and quadrupole *** simplify the current lead design and reduce complexity,the project opted conduction cooling for these magnets,thus requiring a redesign compared to previous prototype bath cooled *** designs for high energy accelerators adopt bath cooled design of the solenoid focusing lenses for medium energy *** present design explores a unique and technically superior solution for the cryomodule operation by decoupling the magnet and cavity cooling to certain *** in cryomodule operations shall be studied after integration of magnets in the Linac *** we discuss the design requirements,challenges,electromagnetic design,superconducting wire selection and the results from magnetic measurements of the first pre-series units.

Based on the developed neural-fuzzy control system for anaerobic hybrid reactor （AHR） in wastewater treatment and biogas production, the neural network with backpropagation algorithm for prediction of the variables pH, alkalinity （Alk） and total volatile acids （TVA） at present day time t was used as input data for the fuzzy logic to calculate the influent feed flow rate that was applied to control and monitor the process response at different operations in the initial, overload influent feeding and the recovery phases. In all three phases, this neural-fuzzy control system showed great potential to control AHR in high stability and performance and quick response. Although in the overloading operation phase II with two fold calculating influent flow rate together with a two fold organic loading rate （OLR）, this control system had rapid response and was sensitive to the intended overload. When the influent feeding rate was followed by the calculation of control system in the initial operation phase I and the recovery operation phase III, it was found that the neural-fuzzy control system application was capable of controlling the AHR in a good manner with the pH close to 7, TVA/Alk 〈 0.4 and COD removal 〉 80% with biogas and methane yields at 0.45 and 0.30 m^3/kg COD removed.

Effect of vacuum degree and aeration rate on sludge dewatering behavior with the aeration-vacuum method

Due to large-scale dredging operations, a large amount of sludge is inevitably produced. Large areas of land are occupied when the dredged sludge is discarded in the disposal site as waste material. The sludge dewatering with aeration-vacuum (SDAV) method is suit for treating the sludge with high water content and high clay content in the disposal site. The water in the sludge can be discharged out. The volume of the sludge can be reduced quickly, and the recycling of the land can be accelerated by this method. Most importantly, this technique is an efficient way to deal with clogging problems when pumping water from high water content, high clay content dredged sludge. Vacuum degree range tests, the aeration rate range tests, and the influencing factors of sludge dewatering behavior tests were conducted with a self-developed SDAV model test device. Sludge samples were taken from the South-to-North Water Diversion East Line Project in Huai’an White-Horse Lake disposal site, Jiangsu Province, China. The optimal range of vacuum degree and aeration rate were obtained through the test results, and the mechanisms for how the two factors work and how they affect the sludge dewatering behavior were analyzed. The suitable vacuum degree range in SDAV is below 50 kPa, and the suitable aeration rate is about 1.0 m3/h. The low-vacuum degree contributes to reduce the ad-sorption effect of micro-channels on soil particles in filter material and to maintain the arch structures. Aeration has the effects of expansion, disturbance, changing Reynolds number, and dynamic sieve separating. The pump quantity of water per meter of filter tube (m) has different change rules as the vacuum degree changes under different aeration rates. The reason is that the formed arch structures’ conformation and permeability differ greatly under different combined-conditions of vacuum degree and aeration rate. The optimal combined-condition for dewatering the sludge is 35 kPa with 1.0 m3/h.

Uptake and translocation of sulfamethazine by alfalfa grown under hydroponic conditions

Antibiotics are routinely used in intensive animal agriculture operations collectively known as Concentrated Animal Feed operations （CAFO） which include dairy, poultry and swine farms. Wastewater generated by CAFOs often contains low levels of antibiotics and is typically managed in an anaerobic lagoon. The objective of this research is to investigate the uptake and fate of aqueous sulfamethazine （SMN） antibiotic by alfalfa （Medicago satiua） grass grown under hydroponic conditions. Uptake studies were conducted using hydroponically grown alfalfa in a commercially available nutrient solution supplemented with 10 mg/L of SMN antibiotic. Analysis of alfalfa sap, root zone, middle one-third, and top portion of the foliage showed varying uptake rate and translocation of SMN. The highest average amount of SMN （8.58 μg/kg） was detected in the root zone, followed by the top portion （1.89μg/kg）, middle one-third （1.30 μg/kg）, and sap （0.38 μg/kg） samples, indicating a clear distribution of SMN within the sampled regions. The ultraviolet （UV） spectra of parent SMN and translocated SMN identified in different parts of the plant present the possibility of metabolization during the uptake process. Uptake of SMN using alfalfa grown under hydroponic conditions has potential as a promising remediation technology for removal of similar antibiotics from wastewater lagoons.

New non-volatile memory (NVM)technologies are expected to replace main memory DRAM (dynamic random access memory)in the near *** flash technological breakthroughs have enabled wide adoption of solid state drives (SSDs)in storage ***,flash-based SSDs,by nature,cannot avoid low endurance problems because each cell only allows a limited number of *** can give rise to critical SSD reliability *** many SSD write operations eventually cause many SSD erase operations,reducing SSD write traffic plays a crucial role in SSD reliability. This paper proposes two NVM-based buffer cache policies which can work together in different layers to maximally reduce SSD write traffic:a main memory buffer cache design named Hierarchical Adaptive Replacement Cache (H-ARC)and an internal SSD write buffer design named Write traffic Reduction Buffer (WRB).H-ARC considers four factors (dirty,clean, recency,and frequency)to reduce write traffic and improve cache hit ratios in the *** reduces block erasures and write traffic further inside an SSD by effectively exploiting temporal and spatial *** two comprehensive schemes significantly reduce total SSD write traffic at each different layer (i.e.,host and SSD)by up to ***,they help extend SSD lifespan without system performance degradation.
