Inertial mixing of acoustically levitated droplets for time-lapse protein crystallography

Varying the chemical consistency of acoustically levitated droplets opens up an in situ study of chemical and biochemical reactions in small ***,the opti-mization of the mixing time and the minimization of the positional instability induced by solution dispensing are necessary for practical applications such as the study of the transient state of macromolecules crystallography during the ligand binding *** this purpose,we study the inertial mixing in a configuration compatible with the room-temperature crystallography using the acoustic levitation diffractometer,therein solution drops ejected at high velocity collide and coalesce with droplets dis-pensed on acoustically levitated and rotating polymer thin-film sample *** the proposed method,we are able to achieve the mixing time of∼0.1 s for sub-micro and a few microliter *** observed short mixing time is ascribed to the rapid penetration of the solution into the droplets and confirmed by a computational fluid dynamic *** demonstrated accelerated solution mixing is tested in a pilot time-lapse protein crystallography experiment using the acoustic levitation *** results indicate the detection of transient ligand binding state within 2 s after the solution dispensing,suggesting the feasibility of the proposed method for studying slow biochemical processes.

Background The impact of changing land-use patterns and associated anthropogenic threats on scale-dependent habitat use of semi-aquatic mustelids in scent-marking and social behaviour can provide important insights into the habitat ecology of smooth-coated otters(Lutrogale perspicillata).Methods We sampled 180 stream segments(100–400 m) as spatial replicates of 60 1-km2 sites to record indirect evidence(i.e. spraints and mass latrine sites) and group sizes of smooth-coated otters along the Tungabhadra Otter Conservation Reserve(TOCR) during the dry season. To quantify habitat, we recorded stream characteristics, riparian vegetation, and anthropogenic disturbances at the local scale, and hydro-environmental characteristics and land uses at the landscape scale. Using Markovian-chain detection and occupancy models, we assessed the multi-scale habitat use of otters in their selection of suitable areas for scent-marking based on repeated presence-absence data on spraint/latrine locations along the TOCR. We further used linear regression techniques to explore relationships between the number of individuals in smooth-coated otter group and hydro-environmental characteristics, spraint/latrine encounter rate, anthropogenic pressure, land cover, topography, and *** At the local scale, the probability of spraint deposition and group size decreased with anthropogenic disturbance while the probability of spraint detections decreased with grass cover. At the landscape scale, the probability of otter site use for spraint deposition and group sizes increased in southeast flowing streams. Focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign tumor of the liver that is often found incidentally with *** purpose of this review is to discuss the pathophysiology,rare complications that can occur due to these lesions,and management options.A literature review was performed on clinical trials and case reports involving focal nodular hyperplasia complications and management of these,as well as the proposed pathogenesis underlying these *** exposure to oral contraceptive pills and endogenous hormones have been thought to play a role in the development of these lesions,this has not been *** recently,they are thought to arise as a consequence of a vascular anomaly causing alterations in the expression of angiopoietin *** are rare,but previous cases have reported associated pain,rupture and compression of nearby structures(hepatic vein,stomach,biliary system).Resection of focal nodular hyperplasia is not usually ***,if there is associated pain with no other identifiable cause or presence of a large or growing lesion with risk of causing a complication,then surgical resection,radiofrequency ablation or arterial embolization should be considered.
