Purpose The goal of this study was to examine the association of calcium supplements with coronary artery disease and survival. Our initial hypothesis was that when adjusted for risk factors, calcium supplements would not affect overall survival outcomes or coronary artery disease prevalence in a community population followed by a large cardiovascular practice. Methods Data was retrospectively collected for 5 years and 8 months (1/1/2004to 10/8/2009) from the electronic medical record at a large cardiovascular practice at a university. Only patients ≥ age 50 were included in our analysis Results The baseline characteristics of the 8060 study subjects. For the entire study population the mean age was 65 +/– 10 years, 71% were women. On multivariable logistic regression analysis, calcium supplementation was not an independent predictor of all-cause death, nor was calcium supplementation an independent predictor of the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Survival analysis showed no survival differences for patients on calcium supplements (p = NS). Hazard ratios using the Cox proportional hazards model were calculated, showing that calcium supplementation was not an independent predictor of reduced survival. Conclusion This study suggests that there was no association between calcium supplementation and coronary artery disease as well as overall survival in a large retrospective cohort of patients greater than 50 with high rates of significant cardiovascular risk factors.

Depressive disorders are recognized as one of the most common mental health conditions across different age ***,the risk factors associated with depression among older people from low-and middle-income countries remains *** study aims to identify socio-demographic,health and psychosocial-related factors associated with depression in Chilean older adults.A cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of 1,765 adults aged≥60 years participants from the Chilean National Health Survey 2016–***-sion was assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview(CIDI-SF).Associations between the exposure variables and depression were investigated using Poisson regression *** mainﬁndings indi-cated that women showed higher likelihood of depression than men(Prevalence Ratio(PR)=2.6[95%CI:1.40;4.89]).An increased likelihood of depression was found in older adults with chronic pain,multimorbidity(≥2 diseases),previous diagnose of depression,high perception of stress,ﬁnancial stress,and difﬁculties for social *** women,higher likelihood of depression was found for those with the frailty phenotype(PR:8.53[95%CI:1.68;43.32]),rheumatoid arthritis(PR:2.41[95%CI:1.34;4.34]),insomnia(PR:2.99[95%CI:1.74;5.12])and low self-rated well-being(PR:4.94[95%CI:2.26;10.79]).Men who were divorced(PR:7.10[95%CI:1.44;34.90])or widowed(PR:10.83[95%CI:3.71;31.58]),obese(PR:5.08[95%CI:1.48;17.42])and who had asthma(PR:7.60[95%CI:2.31;24.99])were associated with higher odds of *** currentﬁndings may have clinical implications for the early identiﬁcation of older adults more susceptible to depression and also suggest the need to implement cultural and age-sensitive strategies to promote mental health in late life.

The induction of host protective immunity is an important factor in the immunization against potentially fatal disease and emerging illnesses in the U.S. and global populations especially among immunologically susceptible na?ve hosts. Vaccination programs need to be evaluated as regards their health and economic population benefit among indigenous at risk populations taking into account emerging pathologies defined by the sudden appearance of a pathogen in nature or in a region of the world. Global collaboration is a necessary aspect of vaccine-preventable diseases since even a small number of wild-type cases of eradicated diseases in one region of the world present opportunities for their re-emergence in geographically remote areas. This study is a step in the direction of understanding the epidemiologic aspects of vaccination.

Association between Sleep Disturbances and Cardiovascular diseases: Results from NHANES

Objectives: The relationship between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not well established. This study assesses the association between sleep disturbances and CVD, and the effect of sleep duration on the relationship between sleep disturbances and CVD among adults in the United States (US). Design: Cross-sectional analysis. Setting: NHANES (National Health and nutrition Examination Survey). Participants: A total of 5660 adults were included from the 2015-2016 cycle of the NHANES survey. Measurements: The main outcome was the presence of any CVD and included self-reported angina, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, hypertension and myocardial infarction. Associations between sleep disturbances and sleep duration with CVD were analyzed using logistic regression. Stratified models by sleep duration were used to assess effect modification. Results: We included 5660 participants (52.2% males), 32.7% of the participants reported having a disturbed sleep and 38% reported a CVD. Compared to those who did not report any sleep disturbances, those with sleep disturbance had 85% higher odds of CVD (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.43 - 2.39). Similarly, there were 40% higher odds of CVD (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.95) among those with shorter sleep duration compared with those that slept for 6 to 9hours. However, there was no evidence of effect modification by sleep duration. Conclusions: Our findings show that sleep disturbance is associated with higher odds of CVD. Clinicians and other healthcare providers need to consider the consequence of sleep disturbances and implement strategies in the treatment of patients with or at high risk of CVD.

Evaluation of xerostomia closely associated with systemic diseases using a dental approach

Based on the findings of epidemiological surveys in western countries, the number of person with suspected xerostomia in Japan is estimated to be 30,000,000. Xerostomia is caused by: 1) Systemic diseases;2) Medications;3) Tumors or trauma;4) Radiotherapy;and 5) Neurological factors. Its symptoms can be alleviated, and its progression can be stopped by close cooperation between the dental and medical departments. However, at present, symptomatic treatment methods such as water drinking, oral rinsing with water, and administration of Kampo medicines or parasymptomimetic drugs are mainly used, and a standard treatment has not been established. On the other hand, previous studies on xerostomia have reported improvement in dry mouth symptoms using dental approaches or a relationship between the development of candidiasis and the salivary flow rate. Therefore, in this study, to establish a dental method useful for improving xerostomia associated with systemic diseases and medications for them, we restored occlusal function, and as a result, increased the salivary flow rate, and evaluated changes in oral findings.

Purification and Partial Characterization of Polyphenol Oxidase from Sapodilla Plum (<i>Achras sapota</i>)

The browning of fruits can be considered as an enzymatic oxidation which is believed to be one of the main causes of quality loss during post-harvest handling. The enzymes responsible for this are the oxidoreductases;the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) (monophenol, o-diphenol, oxygen oxidoreductase;EC 1.***.18.1) belongs to this group. This enzyme, which is found in the sapodilla plum (Achras sapota), was purified using a phenylsepharose and a SephacrylS-200 columns. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was estimated to be about 66 kDa by gel filtration and 29 kDa by SDS-PAGE. A single protein band was found using the latter system (SDS-PAGE), which shows that the PPO of the pulp of the sapodilla plum may be composed of two protein subunits with similar molecular weight. The optimum pH was 7.0 and the optimum temperature 60℃. The most effective inhibitors tested were ascorbic acid, sodium metabisulfite and acetic acid.

The bone marrow in the skull is important for shaping immune responses in the brain and meninges, but its molecular makeup among bones and relevance in human diseases remain unclear. Here, we show that the mouse skull has the most distinct transcriptomic profile compared with other bones in states of health and injury, characterized by a late-stage neutrophil phenotype. In humans, proteome analysis reveals that the skull marrow is the most distinct, with differentially expressed neutrophil-related pathways and a unique synaptic protein signature. 3D imaging demonstrates the structural and cellular details of human skull-meninges connections (SMCs) compared with veins. Last, using translocator protein positronemission tomography (TSPO-PET) imaging, we show that the skull bone marrow reflects inflammatory brain responses with a disease-specific spatial distribution in patients with various neurological disorders. The unique molecular profile and anatomical and functional connections of the skull show its potential as a site for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating brain diseases.
