Functional lumen imaging probe use in a high-volume practice:Practical and technical implications

BACKGROUND The functional lumen imaging probe(FLIP)is a Food and Drug Administration approved tool to aid the diagnosis and management of esophageal disorders.However,widespread adoption of FLIP remains limited and its utility in highvolume practices remains unclear.AIM To analyze large sample data on clinical use of FLIP and provide insight on several technical aspects when performing FLIP.METHODS We conducted a retrospective comparative and descriptive analysis of FLIP procedures performed by a single provider at an academic medical center.There was a total of 398 FLIP procedures identified.Patient medical records were reviewed and data regarding demographics and procedural details were collected.Statistical tests,including chi-squared,t-test,and multivariable logistic and linear regression,were performed.RESULTS There was an increase in FLIP cases with each successive time period of 13 months(n=68,146,184,respectively)with notable rises specifically for indications of dysphagia and gastroesophageal reflux disease.There was a shift toward use of the longer FLIP balloon catheter for diagnostic purposes(overall 70.4%vs 29.6%,P<0.01).Many cases(42.8%)were performed in conjunction with other diagnostics/interventions,such as dilation and wireless pH probe placement.Procedures were nearly equally performed with anesthesia vs moderate sedation(51.4%anesthesia),with no major complications.Patients who had anesthesia were less likely to have recurrent antegrade contractions[odds ratio(OR)=0.4,95%CI:0.3-0.8]and were also more likely to have absent contractility(OR=2.4,95%CI:1.3-CONCLUSION FLIP cases have increased in our practice with expanding indications for its use.Given limited normative data,providers should be aware of several potential technical issues,including the possible impact of sedation choice when assessing esophageal motility patterns.

Judgment of blast furnace iron-tapping status based on data differential processing and dynamic window analysis algorithm

Ironmaking plants hold a core position in steel production. Efficient level detection and iron-tapping status judgment can accurately measure the liquid level and predict the amount of molten iron in the ladle, thereby ensuring production safety and improving production efficiency. At present, the judgment of the start and end statuses of blast furnace iron-tapping mainly relies on manual visual inspection. However, due to the high-temperature environment on-site and interference from iron powder, gunning mud, and other dust, operators find it challenging to make accurate judgments. To address these issues, this study proposes a robust and accurate method for judging the iron-tapping status of blast furnaces. This study collected four million on-site liquid level data, underwent interpolation, noise reduction, normalization, and other preprocessing steps, and then used differential processing to calculate the iron-tapping rate. Combined with dynamic window feature analysis, it effectively captured the change characteristics of the liquid level in the ladle under different iron-tapping statuses.In simulated on-site experiments, the method achieved a 96.6 % accuracy rate for iron-tapping status judgment.The real-time iron-tapping status judgment method based on differential processing of liquid level data and dynamic window feature analysis proposed in this study demonstrates high precision and robustness in the complex environment of ironmaking plants. This technology not only improves the production efficiency of the iron and steel link but also frees on-site operators from the harsh working environment, eliminating human errors in judgments and omissions, further promoting the intelligent process of ironmaking plants.

Oral cancer (OC) is the most common form of head and neck cancer. Despite the high incidence and unfavourable patient outcomes, currently, there are no biomarkers for the early detection of OC. This study aims to discover, develop, and validate a novel saliva-based microRNA signature for early diagnosis and prediction of OC risk in oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD).The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) miRNA sequencing data and small RNA sequencing data of saliva samples were used to discover differentially expressed miRNAs. Identified miRNAs were validated in saliva samples of OC (n=50), OPMD (n=52), and controls(n=60) using quantitative real-time PCR. Eight differentially expressed miRNAs (miR-7-5p, miR-10b-5p, miR-182-5p, miR-215-5p,miR-431-5p, miR-486-3p, miR-3614-5p, and miR-4707-3p) were identified in the discovery phase and were validated. The efficiency of our eight-miRNA signature to discriminate OC and controls was:area under curve (AUC):0.954, sensitivity:86%, specificity:90%,positive predictive value (PPV):87.8%and negative predictive value (NPV):88.5%whereas between OC and OPMD was:AUC:0.911,sensitivity:90%, specificity:82.7%, PPV:74.2%and NPV:89.6%. We have developed a risk probability score to predict the presence or risk of OC in OPMD patients. We established a salivary miRNA signature that can aid in diagnosing and predicting OC,revolutionising the management of patients with OPMD. Together, our results shed new light on the management of OC by salivary miRNAs to the clinical utility of using miRNAs derived from saliva samples.

Statistical Analysis of Articles Published in China CDC Weekly——Worldwide,2019-2020

Introduction:This study analyzed views and downloads of articles published in China CDC Weekly from 2019 to 2020 as part of an evaluation of the academic level and quality of the journal.Methods:The study included articles published between November 29,2019 and December 25,2020 and evaluated views and downloads through February 9,2021 using standard bibliometrics.We conducted network analysis with VOSviewer software.Results:There were 283 articles from 101 institutions published in China CDC Weekly during the analysis period,among which 22(21.8%)institutions were overseas institutions.There were 220 unique first authors,with 1.28 articles per first author.There were 2,404,882 views and 58,760 downloads in total.The article with the highest view and download counts had 1,244,826 views and 38,978 downloads.Article types with more than 4,500 views per article were Vital Surveillance,Notes from the Field,and Preplanned Studies.Subjects with more than 3,500 views per article were epidemiology of infectious diseases,epidemiology of non-infectious diseases,and maternal and child health.Articles with descriptive research and articles discussing public health monitoring received more attention,shown by larger average per article page views.Discussion:Study results can help the editorial department improve the journal’s international influence through targeted measures,such as adjusting article types according to view and download analyses and increasing the proportion of international manuscripts selected.

This paper gives a definition of the Industrial Internet and expounds on the academic connotation of the future Industrial Internet.From this foundation,we outline the development and current status of the Industrial Internet in China and globally.Moreover,we detail the avant-garde paradigms encompassed within the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC)’s“Future Industrial Internet Fundamental Theory and Key Technologies”research plan and its corresponding management strategies.This research initiative endeavors to enhance interdisciplinary collaborations,aiming for a synergistic alignment of industry,academia,research,and practical implementations.The primary focus of the research plan is on the pivotal scientific challenges inherent to the future industrial internet.It is poised to traverse the“first mile”,encompassing foundational research and pioneering innovations specific to the industrial internet,and seamlessly bridges to the“last mile”,ensuring the effective commercialization of scientific and technological breakthroughs into tangible industrial market applications.The anticipated contributions from this initiative are projected to solidify both the theoretical and practical scaffolding essential for the cultivation of a globally competitive industrial internet infrastructure in China.

Wildlife trafficking is a global phenomenon posing many negative impacts on socio-environmental systems.Scientific exploration of wildlife trafficking trends and the impact of interventions is significantly encumbered by a suite of data reuse challenges.We describe a novel,open-access data directory on wildlife trafficking and a corresponding visualization tool that can be used to identify data for multiple purposes,such as exploring wildlife trafficking hotspots and convergence points with other crime,discovering key drivers or deterrents of wildlife trafficking,and uncovering structural patterns.Keyword searches,expert elicitation,and peer-reviewed publications were used to search for extant sources used by industry and non-profit organizations,as well as those leveraged to publish academic research articles.The open-access data directory is designed to be a living document and searchable according to multiple measures.The directory can be instrumental in the data-driven analysis of unsustainable illegal wildlife trade,supply chain structure via link prediction models,the value of demand and supply reduction initiatives via multi-item knapsack problems,or trafficking behavior and transportation choices via network interdiction problems.

Towards impact tenacity of academic institutions: A case study in Informetrics

academic institutions are important subjects of discipline construction and knowledge production.It is crucial to study and evaluate the impact of institutions,and scientific evaluation is conducive to the development of academic institutions and the improvement of organizational efficiency.Most of the existing bibliometric indicators measure the impact of academic institutions from the perspective of citations(or variations).In this paper,we focus on a different side of their impact,namely tenacity.We conceptualize impact tenacity of academic institutions and define a series of indicators for operationalization.Besides,we implement correlation analysis and principal component analysis to explore whether the impact tenacity indicators and other bibliometric indicators are related and on the same dimension,taking informetrics as the representative discipline.We find that there was a significant negative correlation between the defined impact tenacity and number of papers,number of citations,and number of authors,and involved indicators(i.e.,impact tenacity and other involved bibliometric indicators)describe two almost orthogonal dimensions.Moreover,this paper also selects the Max Planck Society and Taiwan Applied Research Laboratories(China)as case studies,and reveals that low-tenacity and high-tenacity institutions have quite different characteristics.Based on these findings,we make some constructive suggestions for research policy makers,such as considering maintaining a high tenacity of institutions by supplementing more academic training.

The burden of chronic airway diseases,including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),continues to increase,especially in low-and middle-income countries.Post-tuberculosis lung disease(PTLD)is characterized by chronic lung changes after the"cure"of pulmonary tuberculosis(TB),which may be associated with the pathogenesis of COPD.However,data on its prevalence,clinical manifestations,computed tomography features,patterns of lung function impairment,and influencing factors are limited.The pathogenic mechanisms underlying PTLD remain to be elucidated.This review summarizes the recent advances in PTLD and TB-associated COPD.Research is urgently needed both for the prevention and management of PTLD.
