Subretinal fibrosis is the end-stage sequelae of neovascular age-related macular *** causes local damage to photoreceptors,retinal pigment epithelium,and choroidal vessels,which leads to permanent central vision loss of patients with neovascular age-related macular *** pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis is complex,and the underlying mechanisms are largely ***,there are no effective treatment options.A thorough understanding of the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis and its related mechanisms is important to elucidate its complications and explore potential *** current article reviews several aspects of subretinal fibrosis,including the current understanding on the relationship between neovascular age-related macular degeneration and subretinal fibrosis;multimodal imaging techniques for subretinal fibrosis;animal models for studying subretinal fibrosis;cellular and non-cellular constituents of subretinal fibrosis;pathophysiological mechanisms involved in subretinal fibrosis,such as aging,infiltration of macrophages,different sources of mesenchymal transition to myofibroblast,and activation of complement system and immune cells;and several key molecules and signaling pathways participating in the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis,such as vascular endothelial growth factor,connective tissue growth factor,fibroblast growth factor 2,platelet-derived growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β,transforming growth factor-βsignaling pathway,Wnt signaling pathway,and the axis of heat shock protein 70-Toll-like receptors 2/*** review will improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis,allow the discovery of molecular targets,and explore potential treatments for the management of subretinal fibrosis.

Combination of acoustic radiation force impulse imaging, serological indexes and contrast-enhanced ultrasound for diagnosis of liver lesions

AIM To assess the value of combined acoustic radiation force impulse(ARFI) imaging, serological indexes and contrast-enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) in distinguishing between benign and malignant liver lesions. METHODS Patients with liver lesions treated at our hospital were included in this study. The lesions were divided into either a malignant tumor group or a benign tumor group according to pathological or radiological findings. ARFI quantitative detection, serological testing and CEUS quantitative detection were performed and compared. A comparative analysis of the measured indexes was performed between these groups. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves were constructed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ARFI imaging, serological indexes and CEUS, alone or in different combinations, in identifying benign and malignant liver lesions. RESULTS A total of 112 liver lesions in 43 patients were included, of which 78 were malignant and 34 were benign. Shear wave velocity(SWV) value, serum alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) content and enhancement rate were significantly higher in the malignant tumor group than in the benign tumor group(2.39 ± 1.20 m/s vs 1.50 ± 0.49 m/s, 18.02 ± 5.01 ng/m L vs 15.96 ± 4.33 ng/m L, 2.14 ± 0.21 d B/s vs 2.01 ± 0.31 d B/s; P < 0.05). The ROC curve analysis revealed that the areas under the curves(AUCs) of SWV value alone, AFP content alone, enhancement rate alone, SWV value + AFP content, SWV value + enhancement rate, AFP content + enhancement rate and SWV value + AFP content + enhancement rate were 85.1%, 72.1%, 74.5%, 88.3%, 90.4%, 82.0% and 92.3%, respectively. The ethanol response gene Cab45 can modulate the impairment elicited by ethanol and ultraviolet in PC12 cells

High consumption of ethanolic beverages facilitates neurodegeneration, but the mechanism of this process still remained elusive. Suppression subtractive hybridization （SSH） is a technique for detection of rare transcripts. With SSH approach, we identified one ethanol response gene Cab45, which was down-regulated by ethanol with time-dependent manner in B104 cells. The full-length sequence of Cab45 gene was obtained by 5＇-RACE （5＇Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends） for the first time in rat. Based on the sequence of deduced amino acid of rat Cab45, the alignment was conducted with its counterparts in different species and displayed a high conservation. Using different tissues in rat and cell lines, Cab45 was characterized by a ubiquitous expression and differentiation dependent down-regulation. Given that ethanol facilitates some cell differentiation, we hypothesize that Cab45 is involved in ethanol-mediated differentiation. With transient transfection, the function of Cab45 was investigated by up-regulation and down-regulation in PC12 cells. Ethanol treatment and UV exposure were conducted subsequently and cell proliferations were detected by MTT （Methyl Thiazolyl Tetrazolium） approach. It revealed that the up-regulation of Cab45 modulated the impairment elicited by ethanol and UV in transfected cells. As a member of new calcium binding protein family, the exact role of Cab45 still remains unclear.

Effect of anesthesia on cognitive status and MMP-2 expression in rats

Objective:To investigate the effect of anesthesia on the cognitive status damage and MMP-2expression in ***:A total of 120 healthy rats were selected and randomly divided into the control group,CF3-CH(OCH2F)-CF3(Sevoflurane)group and CF3-CH2-O-CHF-CF3group(Sevoflurane)(n=40).After training for 3 d by the Morris water maze,the control group were injected with fentanyl for analgesia,the CF3-CH(OCH2F)-CF3 group and the CF3-CH2-O-CHFCF3 group were anesthesia with CF3-CH(OCH2F)-CF3 and CF3-CH2-O-CHF-CF3 on the basis of fentanyl,then rats in three groups underwent open surgery and suture conventional *** water maze was used to measure the rats cognitive ability in three groups on the 1st d,3rd d,5th d and 7th d,and the brain tissue MMP-2 expression was ***:After1 d/7 d of the surgery,Morris water maze performance and MMP-2 expression were not significantly different among three groups(P>0.05);After 3 d/5 d of the surgery,compared with the control group,the Morris water maze test result was significantly worsened,MMP-2expression levels were significantly increased(P<0.05);After 3 d/5 d of the surgery,compared with the CF3-CH2-O-CHF-CF3 group,Morris water maze test result of CF3-CH(OCH2F)-CF3group was significantly worsened,MMP-2 expression levels were significantly increased(P<0.05).Conclusions:Anesthesia can cause some injury on cognitive status,different anesthetic drugs may cause different injury,and the cognitive status injury is related to the MMP-2 expression.

Investigation of photodynamic therapy on streptococcus mutans of oral biofilm

We investigated the effect of photodynamic therapy （PDT） with hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether （HMME） on the viability of Streptococcus mutans （S. mutans） cells on biofilms in vitro. Streptococcus mutans is the primary etiological agent of human dental caries. Since dental caries are localized infections, such plaque-related diseases would be well suited to PDT. The diode laser used in this study had the wavelength of 635 nm, whose output power was 10 mW and the energy density was 12.74 J/cm^2. HMME was used as photosensitizer. Samples were prepared and divided into five groups：（1） HMME; （2） Laser; （3） HMME＋Laser; （4） Control group （＋） with chlorhexidine; and （5） Control group （-） with sterile physiological saline. Inoculum of S. mutans incubated with HMME also examined with fluorescence microscopy. PDT exhibited a significantly （P 〈 0.05） increased antimicrobial potential compared with 20 μm/mL HMME only, laser only, 0.05% chlorhexidine, and 0.9% sterile physiological saline, which reduced the S. mutans of the biofilm most effectively. Laser and 0.05% chlorhexidine were caused reduction in the viable counts of S. mutans significantly different （P 〈 0.05） also, but these two test treatments did not statistically differ from each other. HMME group did not statistically differ with negative control group. Fluorescence microscopy indicated that HMME localized primarily in the S. mutans of the biofilm. It was demonstrated that HMME-mediated PDT was efficient at killing S. mutans of biofilms and a useful approach in the treatment of dental plaque-related diseases.

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of various botulinum toxin A doses and concentrations in spastic foot after stroke: a randomized controlled trial

No recommended guidelines currently exist for the therapeutic concentration or dose of botulinum toxin type A （BTXA） injected into the muscle to treat limb spasticity. Therefore, in this randomized controlled trial, we explored the safety and efficacy of two concentrations and two doses of BTXA in the treatment of spastic toot after stroke to optimize this treatment in these patients. Eligible patients （n = 104） were randomized into four groups. The triceps surae and tibialis posterior on the affected side were injected with BTXA at one of two doses （200 U or 400 U） and two concentrations （50 U/mL or 100 U/mL）. 2he following assessments were conducted before as well as 4 days and 1, 2, 4, and 12 weeks after treatment： spasticity, assessed using the modified Ashworth scale; basic functional mobility, assessed using a timed up and go test; pace, assessed using a 10-meter timed walking test; and the ability to walk, assessed using Holden＇s graded scale and a visual analog scale. The reported results are based on the 89 patients that completed the study. We found significant differences for the two doses and concentrations of BTXA to improve the ability of patients to walk independently, with the high-dose/low-concentration combination providing the best effect. Onset and duration of the ameliorating effects of BTXA were 4-7 days and 12 weeks, respectively. Thus, BTXA effectively treated foot spasms after stroke at an optimal dose of 400 U and concentration of 50 U/mL.

The Combined Use of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicines for Treatment of Menopausal Syndrome——A Clinical Report of 63 Cases

Objective: To evaluate therapeutic effects of the combined use of acupuncture and Chinese medicines in 63 cases of menopausal syndrome. Methods: Ninety-three cases of menopausal syndrome were randomly divided into 2 groups. Sixty-three cases of the treatment group were treated by the combined use of acupuncture and Chinese medicines. Thirty cases in the control group were only given Western medicines. Results: The total effective rate was 96.83% in the treatment group, and 73.33% in the control group. Conclusions: The combined use of acupuncture and Chinese medicines is more effective for treating menopausal syndrome.
