Barriers and motivators to the adoption of electric vehicles:A global review

Electric vehicles(EVs)have the potential to mitigate the severity of significant concerns including environmental pollution and reliance on fossil fuels;however,despite strong governmental promotional efforts,their market penetration is still at the nascent *** paper empirically investigates the factors that affect the consumers'intention to adopt EVs by conducting an exhaustive literature *** initial search resulted in 1,690 publications,but after a thorough exclusion process,537 articles were deemed relevant and were sorted by source,publication year,country of origin,data collection method,and research *** results revealed the influential factors over individuals’desire to adopt an EV were categorized into four main types(contextual,situational,demographic,and psychological);situational factors,that can act as both barriers and motivators,had the most influencing *** most cited barriers to adoption of EVs were found to be the lack of charging stations availability and their limited driving *** most cited motivators to EV adoption were found to be reduction in air pollution and the availability of policy *** findings of this study may guide policymakers in formulating effective transportation and energy policies,as well as provide guidance to those who are responsible for designing EVs that fit the needs and demands of potential consumers.

The year 2023 marks the 35^(th) anniversary of the establishment of Biomedical and environmental Sciences(BES) by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC).This milestone provides an opportunity to review past achievements and envisage future ***-Five-Year Progress and Achievements In 1988,professor Chunming Chen,the founding director General of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM,renamed the China CDC in 2002),established the international journal BES to publish research results from Chinese scientists in ***,professor Chen,along with the renowned toxicologist professor Frederick Coulston of Albany Medical College in the United States,jointly served as the editors-in-chief,propelling the growth and development of this pioneering journal,while the editorial team is composed exclusively of professionals from the China CDC,and the editorial office was located at the China CDC.

Investigating the effect of volatility on the hygroscopicities of acetate nanoparticle aerosols by surface plasmon resonance microscopy

Under high relative humidity(RH)conditions,the release of volatile components(such as acetate)has a significant impact on the aerosol *** this work,one surface plasmon resonance microscopy(SPRM)measurement system was introduced to determine the hygroscopic growth factors(GFs)of three acetate aerosols separately or mixed with glucose at different *** Ca(CH_(3)COO)_(2) or Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) aerosols,the hygroscopic growth trend of each time was lower than that of the previous time in three cyclic humidification from 70% RH to 90% RH,which may be due to the volatility of acetic acid leading to the formation of insoluble hydroxide(Ca(OH)_(2) or Mg(OH)_(2))under high RH *** the third calculated GF(using the Zdanovskii-Stokes-Robinson method)for Ca(CH_(3)COO)_(2) or Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) in bicomponent aerosols with 1:1 mass ratio were 3.20% or 5.33% lower than that of the first calculated GF at 90% *** calculated results also showed that the hygroscopicity change of bicomponent aerosol was negatively correlated with glucose content,especially when the mass ratio of Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) to glucose was 1:2,the GF at 90% RH only decreased by4.67% after three cyclic *** coupled plasma atomic emission spectrum(ICP-AES)based measurements also indicated that the changes of Mg^(2+)concentration in bicomponent was lower than that of the *** results of this study reveal thatduring the efflorescence transitions of atmospheric nanoparticles,the organic acids diffusion rate may be inhibited by the coating effect of neutral organic components,and the particles aging cycle will be prolonged.

Vapor-phase postsynthetic amination of hypercrosslinked polymers for efficient iodine capture

Hypercrosslinked polymers(HCPs)with large surface areas,high intrinsic porosities and low production costs may be available platforms for iodine ***,the lack of iodine-philicity binding sites limits their adsorption *** we use vapor-phase postsynthetic amination strategy to introduce electron-donating amino groups into the prefabricated HCPs for enhancing their iodine capture *** simple vapor-phase exposure,the halogen-containing HCPs can be grafted by amines through nucleophilic substitution toward chloro *** with the abundant amino groups and high porosities,the amino-functionalized porous polymers show substantially increased iodine adsorption capacity,about 221%as that of original one,accompanied by excellent *** investigations reveal the key roles of the electron-donor amino groups andπ-conjugated benzene rings along with structure characteristics of porous polymer frameworks in iodine ***,this vapor-phase amination strategy shows good generality and can be extended to various amines,e.g.,ethylenediamine,1,3-diaminopropane and *** work proves that this simple vapor-phase postsynthetic functionalization strategy may be applied in other porous polymers with wide application prospects in adsorption,separation and storage.

Full-scale dynamic testing of response-controlled buildings and their components:concepts,methods,and findings

A series of shake-table tests was conducted by inserting and replacing 4 different types of dampers,or by removing them in a full-scale 5-story steel frame building. The objective is to validate response-control technologies that are increasingly adopted for major Japanese buildings without being attested to-date by a major earthquake. Test results are briefly described,and good performance of the dampers and frame demonstrated. The concepts of the full-scale building tests and various contributions are discussed. The difficulty associated with full-scale dynamic testing is explained.

Large-scale Discrete Element Modelling of In-situ Direct Shear and Plate Load Tests on Granular Soils

This study unveils a novel and potentially economical particulate discrete element modeling (DEM) technique for large-scale simulation of in-situ direct shear tests (DST) and plate load tests， aimed at accurately determining the shear strength and bearing capacity of granular soil foundations， and exploring the key factors influencing these properties. To overcome the limitations associated with the oversimplification of particle shapes， this work introduces an innovative contact model based on the Hertz contact mechanism that incorporates rolling resistance， enhancing the model’s ability to simulate realistic particle interactions. Guided by Prandtl’s foundation bearing-capacity theory， the dimensions of the foundation model for the DST and plate load tests were meticulously calculated to reflect realistic conditions. DEM simulations showed the peak friction angle from in-situ DST to be consistently lower than laboratory DST， due to a smaller dilatation angle， while proposed loading methods for plate load tests established linear relationships between the foundation’s ultimate bearing capacity and its dimensions， also defining the capacity envelope. Crucially， this study highlights a crucial finding: in-situ direct shear tests (DST) conducted under high normal stress may lead to foundation failure， indicating that excessive normal stress should be avoided to ensure the accuracy of in-situ shear test data and its subsequent applicability in engineering design.

Effect of the Zagros Mountains on the Spatial Distribution of Precipitation

In order to examine the effect of the Zagros Mountains on precipitation, first, the annual and Seasonal rainfall indices （rain days frequency, rain amount, daily rainfall intensity, and heavy rains） from 43 stations in 1995 - 2004 between the 30° N to 35° N parallels over the mountain range were analyzed. Second, the effect of the Zagros Mountains was studied through the computation of the spatial correlations between the precipitation parameters and the topographic indices （station site elevation, station mean elevation within a radius of 2.5 km, mean elevation of 9 blocks along each of the eight Cartesian directions, and the elevation differences of these 9 blocks from the station mean elevation）. The results showed that in the cold season the maximal rainfall occurs on the upper range of west slope, while in warm season it spreads over the study area. The correlations between precipitation and elevation indices were positive on the north of the stations and negative on the south of the stations, that is, the higher elevations of the stations to the north force the uplifting of the moist air masses and increase rainfall at the stations, while the lower elevations to their south lead the movement of the moist air masses to the stations. This is due to the fact that these stations or slopes are exposed to the moist air masses coming from the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. The heavy rain days and the summer sporadic rain events do not show significant correlations with the topographic indices. The findings indicate that the Zagros Mountains intensify the cold period frontal rains especially over the west slope and block the moist air masses from entering the interior parts of the country. Moreover, these mountains play a secondary role in creating rain days. But they are very important in the production of precipitation in the area. China's Economy in 2005: At a New Turning Point and Need to Fix Its Development Problems

China＇s economy in 2005 chalked up another year of 9.9 percent surging growth. In 2005 the government＇s attention was focused on the many negative consequences of China＇s past unbridled economic growth, from rural poverty to environmental degradation and wide income disparities, calling for more ＂sustainable growth＂ or ＂balanced development ＂. The new development paradigm fit nicely into President Hu Jintao＇s concept of ＂scientific development＂ and was embraced by the 11th Five-Year Program （2006- 2010）. The year 2006 might go down in China＇s economic history as an important turning point, as the Hu-Wen leadership will start new development strategies to fix problems previously associated with strong economic growth. Strictly speaking, many of China＇s ＂growth problems ＂ from regional disparities to environmental degradation, are actually quite inevitable - as a part of the development process. But their gravity has often been aggravated by poor governance, blatantly pro-growth policies, and local corruption. Overall, the Chinese leadership has come to realize that its past development patterns are physically unsustainable, and politically and socially unacceptable. It has embraced the need to change. But all development changes will take a long time to yield concrete results.

Korea＇s Economic Growth and Catch-up： Implications for China

This study investigates the economic growth and catch-up of Korea over the past half century. Korea＇s growth experience confirms the prediction of a ＂conditional convergence＂ theory. Cross-country regression further suggests that Korea＇s strong catch-up to the USA is also attributable to its favorable growth factors such as strong investment, lower fertility, greater trade openness, and improvements in human resources and rule of law. However, as Korea catches up to the USA and its steady-state level in per worker output, it will be subject to a growth slowdown unless improvements are made in those growth factors. While manufacturing-oriented and export-oriented development has served Korea＇s success well, poor productivity performance in the services sector has hampered overall productivity growth, Korea＇s experience implies that China＇s potential growth rates are likely to slow in the coming decades due to the convergence effect and with the rebalancing toward a domestic consumption and services-based economy. China needs to upgrade its rule of law, reform state-owned enterprises and improve productivity, particularly in its services sector, to sustain strong growth.
