A Harmonious World and China's New Diplomacy

The concept of"a harmonious world,"a phrase used by the incumbent leadership of China to encapsulate China's diplomatic goals, has become a new guideline for China's diplomatic activities. By applying this concept, Chinese diplomacy has taken a new turn, pushing China into a new and powerful role in world affairs. China's diplomatic effort, however, still faces numerous problems, challenges and risks, requiring the Chinese leadership to refine the concept of"harmonious world"through creative thinking and application.

Amyloid beta(Aβ)monomers aggregate to form fibrils and amyloid plaques,which are critical mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Given the important role of Aβ1-42 aggregation in plaque formation,leading to brain lesions and cognitive impairment,numerous studies have aimed to reduce Aβaggregation and slow AD *** diphenylalanine(FF)sequence is critical for amyloid aggregation,and magnetic fields can affect peptide alignment due to the diamagnetic anisotropy of aromatic *** this study,we examined the effects of a moderate-intensity rotating magnetic field(RMF)on Aβaggregation and AD *** indicated that the RMF directly inhibited Aβamyloid fibril formation and reduced Aβ-induced cytotoxicity in neural cells in *** the AD mouse model APP/PS1,RMF restored motor abilities to healthy control levels and significantly alleviated cognitive impairments,including exploration and spatial and non-spatial memory *** examinations demonstrated that RMF reduced amyloid plaque accumulation,attenuated microglial activation,and reduced oxidative stress in the APP/PS1 mouse *** findings suggest that RMF holds considerable potential as a non-invasive,high-penetration physical approach for AD treatment.

＜正＞ This paper is drawn from author’s technical paper "Worries about Bituminous Roads in Pakistan" read in SAARC seminar on "Design of Pavement" held at Islamabad, Pakistan on 1-6 February 1999. Pakistan, in most of its territory, has a weighted mean annual air temperature of 25 degree centigrade. Weighted mean annual pavement temperature is 40 degree centigrade. Bituminous roads in such a hot climate do not behave. Rutting observed in summer, when pavement temperature touches 70 degree centigrade, is aggravated with heavy axle loads. Construction of roads with traditionally thick bituminous wearing and base courses as per AASHTO Guide is very costly. Failure of such bituminous roads is causing huge financial loss besides posing safety problem.

Most iterative algorithms for eigenpair computation consist of two main steps:a subspace update(SU)step that generates bases for approximate eigenspaces,followed by a Rayleigh-Ritz(RR)projection step that extracts approximate *** far the predominant methodology for the SU step is based on Krylov subspaces that builds orthonormal bases piece by piece in a sequential *** this work,we investigate block methods in the SU step that allow a higher level of concurrency than what is reachable by Krylov subspace *** achieve a competitive speed,we propose an augmented Rayleigh-Ritz(ARR)*** this ARR procedure with a set of polynomial accelerators,as well as utilizing a few other techniques such as continuation and deflation,we construet a block algorithm designed to reduce the number of RR steps and elevate concurrency in the SU *** computational experiments are conducted in C on a representative set of test problems to evaluate the performance of two variants of our *** results,obtained on a many-core computer without explicit code parallelization,show that when computing a relatively large number of eigenpairs,the performance of our algorithms is competitive with that of several state-of-the-art eigensolvers.

Just as the human civilization has entered into a new century, so has the Rus-sian Federation arrived at a critical turning point. The State Duma election justconcluded and President Boris Yeltsin’s resignation ahead of schedule have heraldeddawning of a stabilising Russian political scene. As Russia is still a big power, es-pecially a heavyweight military power, any new developments in the country wouldhave profound impact upon the international community. Therefore, in what direc-tion Russia will develop in the new century is a question not only being watchedclosely by its own people, but also being followed with great interest by the wholeworld.
