The Hg 0 vapor adsorption experimental results on a novel sorbent obtained by impregnating a commercially available activated carbon （Darco G60 from BDH） with silver nitrate were *** study was performed by using a fundamental approach,in an apparatus at laboratory scale in which a synthetic flue gas,formed by Hg 0 vapors in a nitrogen gas stream,at a given temperature and mercury concentration,was flowed through a fixed bed of adsorbent *** curves and adsorption isotherms were obtained for bed temperatures of 90,120 and 150°C and for Hg 0 concentrations in the gas varying in the range of 0.8–5.0 mg/m 3 .The experimental gas-solid equilibrium data were used to evaluate the Langmuir parameters and the heat of *** experimental results showed that silver impregnated carbon was very effective to capture elemental mercury and the amount of mercury adsorbed by the carbon decreased as the bed temperature *** addition,to evaluate the possibility of adsorbent recovery,desorption was also *** runs showed that both the adsorbing material and the mercury could be easily recovered,since at the end of desorption the residue on solid was almost *** material balance on mercury and the constitutive equations of the adsorption phenomenon were integrated,leading to the evaluation of only one kinetic parameter which fits well both the experimentally determined breakthrough and desorption curves.

The engineering of self-organized plasmonic metasurfaces is demonstrated using a maskless technique with defocused ion-beam sputtering and kinetically controlled deposition. The proposed reliable, cost-effective, and controllable approach enables large-area （order of square centimeter） sub-wavelength periodic patterning with close-packed gold nanostrips. A multi-level variant of the method leads to high-resolution manufacturing of vertically stacked nanostrip dimer arrays, without resorting to lithographic approaches. The design of these self-organized metasurfaces is optimized by employing plasmon hybridization methods. In particular, preliminary results on the so-called gap-plasmon configuration of the nanostrip dimers, implementing magnetic dipole resonance in the near-infrared range, are reported. This resonance offers a superior sensitivity and field enhancement, compared with the more conventional electric dipole resonance. The translational invariance of the nanostrip configuration leads to a high filling factor of the hot spots. These advanced features make the large-area metasurface based on gap-plasmon nanostrip dimers very attractive for surface-enhanced linear and nonlinear spectroscopy （e.g., surface-enhanced Raman scattering） and plasmon-enhanced photon harvesting in solar and photovoltaic cells.

This paper reports about flow and sediment transport measurements undertaken during the rainy season(July-August) 2008 on Gereb Oda,a steep,sand-bed ephemeral stream,draining the western margin of the Kobo structural basin in northern *** Oda streambed is dry for most of the year since it is subjected only to sporadic flash floods in response to individual,high intensity and spatially confined *** about hydraulic and sediment transport processes in steep sand-bed,ephemeral stream is very poor and,though only two flash floods occurred during the field campaign,the data gathered may contribute to improve our knowledge on these kind of *** numbers were calculated in order to verify the occurrence of supercritical flow conditions as postulated by a few authors from the analysis of sedimentary structures *** data are also compared to simple models to predict flow velocity and discharge since flow recording systems are seldom installed on ephemeral streams in remote areas and developing *** rivers are known for their very high suspended sediment transport,but very little bedload data exist for sand-bed,ephemeral *** variation of suspended sediment concentration with discharge is analysed and simple rating curves for both suspended and bed load transport are derived.A few equations to predict bedload are tested against Gereb Oda data and the relationship between en masse bedload transport processes as thin sand sheets and the development of horizontal lamination through the migration of leaf-shaped,sheet-like bedforms is ***,large boulders were observed to move at flow depths of the same order of magnitude of their size.A few functions to predict the threshold conditions for large particles entrainment are used to verify if and to what extent they match Gereb Oda field *** increased density of the water-sediment mixture,for the very high suspended sediment concentr

The combination of confocal laser-scanning microscopy(CLSM)and fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy(FFS)is a powerful tool in studying fast,sub-resolution biomolecular processes in living cells.A detector array can further enhance CLSM-based FFS techniques,as it allows the simultaneous acquisition of several samples-essentially images-of the CLSM detection ***,the detector arrays that have previously been proposed for this purpose require tedious data corrections and preclude the combination of FFS with single-photon techniques,such as fluorescence lifetime ***,we solve these limitations by integrating a novel singie-photon-avalanche-diode(SPAD)array detector in a CLSM *** validate this new implementation on a series of FFS analyses:spot-variation fluorescence correlation spectroscopy,pair-correlation function analysis,and image-derived mean squared displacement *** predict that the unique combination of spatial and temporal information provided by our detector will make the proposed architecture the method of choice for CLSM-based FFS.

AIM:To assess whether in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with ileo-rectal anastomosis (IRA), ileal lesions may develop in the neo-terminal-ileum and their possible relation with phenotypic changes towards colonic epithelium. METHODS: A total of 19 patients with IRA under regular follow up were enrolled, including 11 UC and 8 controls (6 Crohn’s disease, CD; 1 familial adenomatous polyposis, FAP; 1 colon cancer, colon K). Ileal lesions were identifi ed by ileoscopy with biopsies taken from the ileum (involved and uninvolved) and from the rectal stump. Staining included HE and immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies against colonic epithelial protein CEP (Das-1) and human tropomyosin isoform 5, hTM5 (CG3). Possible relation between development of colonic metaplasia and ileal lesions was ***: Stenosing adenocarcinoma of the rectal stump was detected in 1 UC patient. The neo-terminal ileum was therefore investigated in 10/11 UC patients. Ileal ulcers were detected in 7/10 UC, associated with colonic metaplasia in 4/7 (57.1%) and Das-1 and CG3 reactivity in 3/4 UC. In controls, recurrence occurred in 4/6 CD, associated with colonic metaplasia in 3/4 and reactivity with Das-1 and CG3 in 2/3. CONCLUSION: Present fi ndings suggest that in UC, ileal lesions associated with changes towards colonic epithelium may develop also after IRA. Changes of the ileal content after colectomy may contribute to the development of colonic metaplasia, leading to ileal lesions both in the pouch and in the neo-terminal ileum after IRA.

AIM： To evaluate the prevalence of Giardia lamblia （G. lamblia） infection in patients with irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） and dyspepsia and to establish which is the most accurate test to diagnose the infection in this setting. METHODS： One hundred and thirty-seven patients who consecutively attended the Outpatient Gastroenterology Clinic for the first time between January 2002 and Decernber 2003 due to symptoms of IBS and/or dyspepsia were recruited. All patients underwent clinical evaluation, first-step haematology and chemistry tests, serologic assays for celiac disease, lactose-H2 breath test, abdominal ultrasonography, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Helicobacterpylon status was evaluated. In patients with symptoms of IBS older than 45 years, colonoscopy was also performed. In all patients, duodenal biopsies and stool samples were examined for trophozoites and cysts of G. lamblia by several methods. RESULTS： G. lamblia was identified in 9 patients. The following diagnoses were also made： IBS （100/137, 73%）, functional dyspepsia （62/137, 45%）, organic dyspepsia （33/137, 24%）, and lactose intolerance （75/137, 55%）. A significant association was found between giardiasis and H pylori infection （x^2= 6.632, OR= 12.4, CI= 1.5-68.1）. There were no symptoms that reliably allowed the recognition of giardiasis. direct search of the parasite in duodenal biopsy and stool sample examinations gave concordant results in all cases while histological examination of duodenal biopsies displayed a low sensitivity （e.g., 22.2%）. CONCLUSION： In this consecutive series, diagnosis of *** infection accounted for 6.5% of patients with IBS and dyspepsia. Duodenal biopsies for diagnosis of giardiasis may be unnecessary if stool sample examination is performed.

We prove the boundedness from Lp（T2） to itself, 1 〈 p 〈∞, of highly oscillatory singular integrals Sf（x, y） presenting singularities of the kind of the double Hilbert transform on a non-rectangular domain of integration, roughly speaking, defined by ｜y′｜〉｜x′｜, and presenting phases λ（Ax ＋ By） with 0≤ A, B ≤ 1 and λ≥ 0. The norms of these oscillatory singular integrals are proved to be independent of all parameters A1 B and A involved. Our method extends to a more general family of phases. These results are relevant to problems of almost everywhere convergence of double Fourier and Walsh series.

Sphere decoders are widely investigated for the implementation of multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) *** a large number of sphere decoding algorithms,the fixed-complexity sphere decoder(FSD) exhibits remarkable advantages in terms of constant throughput and high flexibility of parallel *** this paper,we present a four-nodes-per-cycle parallel FSD architecture with balanced performance and hardware complexity,and several examples of VLSI implementation for different types of modulation and both real and complex signal *** aspects and architecture details are analyzed in order to present a hardware-level perspective of the FSD *** a variety of performance-complexity trade-offs are *** implementation results show that the proposed parallel FSD architecture is highly efficient and flexible,especially in the complex signal model.

Characterization of Glycerol-Extractable Organic Matter from Etna Soils of different Ages

We characterized humic acids （HAs） and glycerol-extractable organic fractions （GEOFs） extracted from four Andisols, taken from comparable soil-climate conditions on the east side of Mount Etna. The soils were formed on old lava （about 9000 years ago）, old tephra （about 8 700 years ago）, recent lava （about 2 600 years ago） and recent tephra （about 3600 years ago）. A part of the organic matter of the soils, deprived of HAs and fulvic acids （FAs）, was isolated by glycerol extraction. The GEOF can not be extracted with alkaline solutions, probably because it is closely bound to the mineral component of the soil. The characterization of the extracted organic fraction was carried out using elementary and functional group analysis and Fourier transform infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy. About 20 extractions were necessary to extract the HA and FA from the older soils and about 10 extractions to extract them from the younger soils. Data showed that the CEOFs had a greater ash content and a smaller N content, as well as a greater presence of aliphatic compounds and carboxylic groups as compared to the HA extracted from the same soil. The GEOFs extracted from younger soils also had a lower yield, ash and COOH-group content, and were more aliphatic than the GEOF extracted from older soils. Finally, the GEOFs were more closely bound to the amorphous component of the soil （＇short-range＇ minerals） and consequently less subject to biodegradation.
