Two homologous plastocyanin isoforms are encoded by the genes PETE1 and PETE2 in the nuclear genome of Arabidopsis thaliana. The PETE2 transcript is expressed at considerably higher levels and the PETE2 protein is the more abundant isoform. Null mutations in the PETE genes resulted in plants, designated pete1 and pete2, with decreased plastocyanin contents. However, despite reducing plastocyanin levels by over -90%, a pete2 null mutation on its own affects rates of photosynthesis and growth only slightly, whereas pete1 knockout plants, with about 60-80% of the wild-type plastocyanin level, did not show any alteration. Hence, plastocyanin concentration is not limiting for photosynthetic elec- tron flow under optimal growth conditions, perhaps implying other possible physiological roles for the protein. Indeed, plastocyanin has been proposed previously to cooperate with cytochrome C6A （Cyt C6A） in thylakoid redox reactions, but we find no evidence for a physical interaction between the two proteins, using interaction assays in yeast. We observed homodimerization of Cyt C6A in yeast interaction assays, but also Cyt C6A homodimers failed to interact with plastocyanin. Moreover, phenotypic analysis of atc6-1 pete1 and atc6-1 pete2 double mutants, each lacking Cyt C6A and one of the two piastocyanin-encoding genes, failed to reveal any genetic interaction. Overexpression of either PETE1 or PETE2 in the pete1 pete2 double knockout mutant background results in essentially wild-type photosynthetic performance, excluding the possibility that the two plastocyanin isoforms could have distinct functions in thylakoid electron flow.

The determination of sex by simple observation is often difficult in marine mammals, even in sexually dimorphic species. Moreover, there is often the practical necessity to determine sex in samples that have been collected without handling or observing the subjects. In these cases, a molecular assay for sex determination is required. We adapted an assay that targets the zinc-finger region and is based on a single primer pair, to the Guadalupe fur seal, a near threatened species that has a very limited breeding range. First, we validated the assay with a sample of pups in which we determined the sex by direct observation during handling;second, we compared it to a more recent assay, based on two different primer pairs and, finally, we evaluated the effect of DNA quantity on its reliability. The assay that we tested produced excellent results and was more reliable than the other one based on two primers. Reliable results were also obtained when only remarkably small quantities of DNA were amplified. These results show the potential use of this molecular assay in case of non-invasive sampling, an overly common situation when dealing with species of problematic conservation status.

Comparative Study of Two Methods of Induction of Estrus and Fertility Following Artificial Insemination in Azawak Zebu in Niger

A comparative of two induction methods of estrus induction and fertility has been carried out on 28 females Azawak zebu in Niger. This study mains chiefly and identifying the most effective method for better inseminations. The females have been divided into two sets following two intra-vaginal devices used. Two sub-sets of 7 females have been formed according to the PMSG dose associated with the treatment. Two inseminations have been carried out. The results are as follows： response to the induction： PRIDe, 57.14%; CIDR-B, 61.53%. Fertility rate： PRIDe, 28.57%; CIDR-B, 38.46%. There has been no significant difference to the estrus induction and fertility, between the PRIDe and the CIDR-B synchronization. Since the two methods virtually lead to the same response rate, the stock breeder can choose one of the methods depending on the cost and by paying attention to the feeding and less stressful factors.

AIM: To summarize the current knowledge about the potential relationship between hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and the risk of several extra-liver cancers. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA) Statement. We extracted the pertinent articles, published in MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library, using the following search terms: neoplasm/cancer/malignancy/tumor/carcinoma/adeno-carcinoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, kidney/renal-, cholangio-, pancreatic-, thyroid-, breast-,oral-, skin-, prostate-, lung-, colon-, stomach-, haematologic. Case series, case-series with control-group, case-control, cohort-studies as well as meta-analyses, written in English were collected. Some of the main characteristics of retrieved trials, which were designed to investigate the prevalence of HCV infection in each type of the above-mentioned human malignancies were summarised. A main table was defined and included a short description in the text for each of these tumours, whether at least five studies about a specific neoplasm, meeting inclusion criteria, were available in literature. According to these criteria, we created the following sections and the corresponding tables and we indicated the number of included or excluded articles, as well as of meta-analyses and reviews:(1) HCV and haematopoietic malignancies;(2) HCV and cholangiocarcinoma;(3) HCV and pancreatic cancer;(4) HCV and breast cancer;(5) HCV and kidney cancer;(6) HCV and skin or oral cancer; and(7) HCV and thyroid cancer. RESULTS: According to available data, a clear correlation between regions of HCV prevalence and risk of extra-liver cancers has emerged only for a very small group of types and histological subtypes of malignancies. The Graeco-Roman harbor of Neapolis (Naples, Italy), chronologically constrained between the late 4th century BC and the 6th century AD, offers a unique sight on relationship between past and present into the history of the marine biodiversity. In fact, the digs expose fossil leaf of Posidonia oceanica with epiphytic communities of microorganisms. Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass endemic to theMediterraneanthat forms large meadows whose remains can persist in the sediment for thousands of years. In this communication, we report results of analyses carried out using both molecular and morphological techniques on sub-fossil leaves of P. oceanica and their associated epiphytic communities.

Pyridine nucleotides, ascorbate and glutathione are major redox metabolites in plant cells, with specific roles in cellular redox homeostasis and the regulation of the cell cycle. However, the regulation of these metabolite pools during exponential growth and their precise functions in the cell cycle remain to be characterized. The present analysis of the abundance of ascorbate, glutathione, and pyridine nucleotides during exponential growth of Arabidopsis cells in culture provides evidence for the differential regulation of each of these redox pools. Ascorbate was most abundant early in the growth cycle, but glutathione was low at this point. The cellular ascorbate to dehydroascorbate and reduced glutathione （GSH） to glutathione disulphide ratios were high and constant but the pyridine nucleotide pools were largely oxidized over the period of exponential growth and only became more reduced once growth had ceased. The glutathione pool increased in parallel with poly （ADP-ribose） polymerase （PARP） activities and with increases in the abundance of PARP1 and PARP2 mRNAs at a time of high cell cycle activity as indicated by transcriptome information. Marked changes in the intracellular partitioning of GSH between the cytoplasm and nucleus were observed. Extension of the exponential growth phase by dilution or changing the media led to increases in the glutathione and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, oxidized form （NAD）-plus-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, reduced form （NADH） pools and to higher NAD/NADH ratios but the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, oxidized form （NADP）-plus-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, reduced form （NADPH） pool sizes, and NAPD/NADPH ratios were much less affected. The ascorbate, glutathione, and pyridine nucleotide pools and PARP activity decreased before the exponential growth phase ended. 1989年报道的早寒武世澄江化石库的云南火把虫(FacivermisyunnanicusHouetChen)躯体的前部具有5对触手,而尾部被解释成简单的尖缩状;并认为可能与环节动物的多毛类相关.此后,它又被解释为与五口动物或触手冠动物等类群具有亲缘关系.最近西北大学早期生命研究所发现了完整云南火把虫标本:完整的云南火把虫不仅显示了躯干前端的5对叶足状附肢,而且还保存了具23圈钩刺的倒梨形尾部.基于这些重要形态学信息,本文作者对云南火把虫的分类位置予以重新界定:其5对叶足状附肢与神奇啰哩山虫(MiraluolishaniaLiuetShu)的前躯干附肢十分相近,似为同源构造,因而很可能与叶足类具有较近的亲缘关系.此外,云南火把虫的5对叶足状附肢对于探索叶足类动物和节肢动物附肢的起源更具有重要的科学意义.

According to classical prediction of aerodynamic theory,birds and other powered fliers that migrate over long distances should have longer and more pointed wings than those that migrate ***,the association between wing morphology and migratory behavior can be masked by contrasting selective pressures related to foraging behavior,habitat selection and predator avoidance,possibly at the cost of lower flight energetic *** studied the handwing morphology of Eurasian barn swallows Hirundo rustica from four populations representing a migration distance *** species is an aerial insectivore,so it flies extensively while foraging,and may migrate during the day using a‘fly-and-forage’migration *** foraging flights may reinforce the effects of migration distance on flight *** found that two wings’aerodynamic properties—isometric handwing length and pointedness,both favoring energetically efficient flight,were more pronounced in barn swallows from populations undertaking longer seasonal migrations compared to less migratory *** result contrast with two recent interspecific comparative studies that either reported no relationship or reported a negative relationship between pointedness and the degree of migratory behavior in *** results may thus contribute to confirming the universality of the rule that longer migrations are associated with more pointed wings.
