Sensitive humidity sensor based on moisture-driven energy generation

The emergence of novel self-powered humidity sensors has attracted considerable attention in the fields of smart electronic devices and personal healthcare.Herein,self-powered humidity sensors have been fabricated using a moisture-driven energy generation(MEG)device based on asymmetric tubular graphitic carbon nitride(g-CN)films prepared on anodized aluminum(AAO)template.At a relative humidity(RH)of 96%,the MEG device can provide an open-circuit voltage of 0.47 V and a short-circuit current of 3.51μA,with a maximum output power of 0.08μW.With inherent self-powered ability and humidity response via current variation,an extraordinary response of 1.78×106%(41%-96%RH)can be gained from the MEG device.The possible power generation mechanism is that g-CN/AAO heterostructure can form ion gradient and diffusion under the action of moisture to convert chemical potential into electrical potential,evoking a connaturally sensitive response to humidity.Self-powered respiration monitoring device based on the sensor is designed to monitor human movement(sitting,warming up,and running)and sleep status(normal,snoring,and apnea),maintaining excellent stability during cumulative 12-h respiration monitoring.This self-powered humidity sensing technology has promising potential for extensive integration into smart electronic and round-the-clock health monitoring devices.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms including agitation are common in dementia,and are associated with decreased quality of life,increased risk of institutionalization,and greater patient and caregiver distress.Pharmacological agents used for management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are limited by their tolerability,prompting a need for identifying efficacious and safe pharmacological treatments for managing agitation in dementia.The combination of dextromethorphan and quinidine sulfate is approved for pseudobulbar affect,and may be effective in managing agitation in dementia.A review of literature found only one randomized controlled trial that evaluated the use of dextromethorphan-quinidine for the management of agitation in dementia when compared to placebo.Data from this trial demonstrated that dextromethorphan-quinidine decreased agitation in dementia,and was well tolerated.Although promising,further research is needed before dextromethorphan-quinidine combination can be accepted as a standard treatment for agitation in dementia.

Evidence for using pimavanserin for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease psychosis

The aim of this editorial is to evaluate the evidence for using pimavanserin for the treatment of Parkinson's disease psychosis(PDP)from randomized controlled trials(RCTs).We only identified two published trials that evaluated the use of pimavanserin among individuals with PDP.Both studies found that pimavanserin improved psychotic symptoms among individuals with PDP when compared to placebo.Pimavanserin was fairly well tolerated in both studies and did not appear to cause significant sedation or worsen motor symptoms among individuals with PDP.However,given the limited data,additional confirmatory studies are required before pimavanserin can be considered as a first line agent for the treatment of psychotic symptoms among individuals with PD.

Hybrid gold/DNA nanowire circuit with sub-10nm nanostructure arrays

We report on a simple and efficient method for the selective positioning of Au/DNA hybrid nanocircuits using a sequential combination of electron-beam lithography(EBL),plasma ashing,and a molecular patterning process.The nanostructures produced by the EBL and ashing process could be uniformly formed over a 12.6 in 2 substrate with sub-10 nm patterning with good pattern fidelity.In addition,DNA molecules were immobilized on the selectively nanopatterned regions by alternating surface coating procedures of 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane(APS)and diamond like carbon(DLC),followed by deposition of DNA molecules into a well-defined single DNA nanowire.These single DNA nanowires were used not only for fabricating Au/DNA hybrid nanowires by the conjugation of Au nanoparticles with DNA,but also for the formation of Au/DNA hybrid nanocircuits.These nanocircuits prepared from Au/DNA hybrid nanowires demonstrate conductivities of up to 4.3×10^(5) S/m in stable electrical performance.This selective and precise positioning method capable of controlling the size of nanostructures may find application in making sub-10 nm DNA wires and metal/DNA hybrid nanocircuits.

Objective. -To examine the characteristics of chronic daily headache sufferers who use emergency departments (EDs) and identify factors predictive of ED visits. Background. -Several large clinical trials have found that a sizable subset of headache patients uses EDs frequently, although such visits should be preventable. Methods. -Participants in two large clinical trials provided baseline data on ED use, hospitalizations, disability, daily activities, and quality of life. Results. -Of the 785 patients included, 182 (23.2%) reported at least 1 ED visit over the past year. Most of these patients (82.9%) reported one to six visits; however, 4.4%reported ≥21 visits (mean 5.0; SD 8.5). The percentage of patients with overnight hospitalizations during the previous year was significantly greater in the ED user group than non-ED user group (17.6%vs 1.7%;P healthcare practitioners (median 24.3 vs 11.8; P < .001). Compared with non-ED users, a higher percentage of ED users reported severe disability on the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) (85.7%vs 69.3%, P < .001) and indicated that their headache more negatively impacted mood and daily activities (all P < .05). ED users also had significantly higher depression scores and lower scores on all domains of the Short Form-36 (SF-36) (all P < .05). In a logistic regression model, patient age, neurologist visit, severe (vs not severe) rating on the MIDAS, Role Physical (SF-36), and prior overnight hospitalization were significant predictors of ED use (max-rescaled R2=21.0%). Conclusions. -Patients seeking ED treatment for chronic daily headache are more severely affected and have more unmet medical needs than those who do not use the ED. Management strategies that help prevent frequent ED use might be possible.

Background:The increasing incidence of pediatric hospitalizations associated with coronavirus disease 2019(Covid-19)caused by the B.1.617.2(delta)variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in the United States has offered an opportunity to assess the real-world effectiveness of the BNT162b2 messenger RNA vaccine in adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age.Methods:We used a case-control,test-negative design to assess vaccine effectiveness against Covid-19 resulting in hospitalization,admission to an intensive care unit(ICU),the use of life-supporting interventions(mechanical ventilation,vasopressors,and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation),or death.Between July 1 and October 25,2021,we screened admission logs for eligible case patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 at 31 hospitals in 23 states.We estimated vaccine effectiveness by comparing the odds of antecedent full vaccination(two doses of BNT162b2)in case patients as compared with two hospitalbased control groups:patients who had Covid-19-like symptoms but negative results on testing for SARS-CoV-2(test-negative)and patients who did not have Covid-19-like symptoms(syndrome-negative).
