Effects of sleep bruxism on functional and occlusal parameters:a prospective controlled investigation

This study was conducted to verify the results of a preceding retrospective pilot study by means of a prospective controlled investigation including a larger sample size. Therefore, the aim of this clinical investigation was to analyze the relationship between sleep bruxism and several functional and occlusal parameters. The null hypothesis of this study was that there would be no differences among sleep bruxism subjects and non-sleep bruxism controls regarding several functional and occlusal parameters. Fifty-eight sleep bruxism subjects and 31 controls participated in this study. The diagnosis sleep bruxism was based on clinical criteria of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sixteen functional and occlusal parameters were recorded clinically or from dental study casts. Similar to the recently published retrospective pilot study, with a mean slide of 0.77 mm （s.d., 0.69 mm） in the sleep bruxism group and a mean slide of 0.4 mm （s.d., 0.57 mm） in the control group, the evaluation of the mean comparison between the two groups demonstrated a larger slide from centric occlusion to maximum intercuspation in sleep bruxism subjects （Mann-Whitney U-test; P=O.O08）. However, following Bonferroni adjustment, none of the 16 occlusal and functional variables differed significantly between the sleep bruxism subjects and the non-sleep bruxism controls. The present study shows that the occlusal and functional parameters evaluated do not differ between sleep bruxism subjects and non-sleep bruxism subjects. However, as the literature reveals a possible association between bruxism and certain subgroups of temporomandibular disorders, it appears advisable to incorporate the individual adaptive caoacitv of the stomatognathic svstem into future investigations.

To evaluate and compare histomorphometrically the bone response to two xenografts,one bovine and the other porcine,grafted in adjacent extraction sockets in a *** this case report,two adjacent maxillary premolars were extracted,and the sockets were filled with two different xenogeneic bone substitutes(first premolar with bovine bone,and second premolar with porcine bone)to counteract post-extraction volume *** 6 months bone core specimens were harvested during the placement of implants at the regenerated ***,for the bovine xenograft the percentage of newly formed bone(osteoid)was 26.85%,the percentage of the residual graft material was 17.2%and the percentage of connective tissue 48.73%,while for the porcine xenograft,newly formed bone(osteoid)represented 32.19%,residual graft material was 6.57%and non-mineralized connective tissue was 52.99%.Histological results indicated that both biomaterials assessed in this study as grafts for socket preservation technique are biocompatible and *** bone derived demonstrated to be less resorbable than porcine bone *** xenogenic biomaterials did not interfere with the normal bone reparative processes.

Clinical Evaluation of a Novel Blended Mode Diode Laser for Hair Removal

Introduction: Photoepilation by lasers is a popular procedure in aesthetic dermatology for removing unwanted body and facial hair. The use of the most appropriate laser wavelength is crucial as it affects treatment depth and melanin absorption. The three commonly used hair removal lasers are of specific wavelengths: 755 nm, 810 nm, and 1064 nm, each preferred certain types of skin and hair characteristics. The current evaluation reports the safety and efficacy of unique blended modes 755/810 nm and 810/1064 nm diode lasers for hair removal. Methods: Hair removal results from 50 patients treated with the 755/810 nm handpiece and 50 patients treated with the 810/1064 nm handpiece were gathered from a few clinics. 3 treatments on various body areas were conducted 6 weeks apart and patients were followed up with 6 months after the last treatment. Results were evaluated by baseline, follow-up photographs, and hair counts. Results: Treatment area photos demonstrated hair reduction in the treated body and facial areas. Average hair count reduction at 6 months follow-up was 84% for the 755/810 nm handpiece and 81% for the 810/1064 nm handpiece. No significant or unexpected adverse events were detected in any of the patients. Conclusions: The novel blended mode hair removal diode lasers are proven to be safe and effective for hair removal in facial and body areas for patients of various skin types and hair characteristics.

Studies on Methane Emissions from Pastoral Farming in New Zealand

The aim of this paper was to give a basic understanding of studies on methane emissions of New Zealand, as we know the agriculture of New Zealand is pastoral farming, most livestock animals are grazed in pasture, and quantities of methane were released from the digestive tract and animals excreta. In New Zealand some 50% greenhouse gases （GHG） sources are attributed to agriculture and one third is methane from livestock enteric formation. For many years, many researchers have been exploiting the techniques and methods to measure the emission of methane of New Zealand, further more studing the available options to alleviate the methane emissions. Their pioneering work and successful experiences including the determined methods and mitigation strategies are worth learning for scholars around the world. Some of their approaches were not only suitable for New Zealand grazed livestock, but for many other countries, even the animals are intensively bred in pen. The calorimeter/respiration chamber is the most exactly method in present, but it needs expensive equipments and skilled manipulators, so there are still some difficulty in applying this approach extensively in practice. Sulfur hexafluoride （SF6） trace technique is much adopted for grazed livestock evaluating the methane emission, though its veracity was doubted by some researchers, it is still a good option in present for studying the GHG emissions for grazing animals. By measuring the rumen volatile fatty acid （VFA） concentration to estimate the methane emission is a relatively simple approach, it is just only a rough evaluation, and it is unsuitable for exact study, but this method may be used in China for extensively raised ruminant. In present China, the ruminants are fed in an extensively managed state, the diversities of roughage and animals varieties caused difficult to exactly estimate the methane emission. AIMTo report about the combination and advantages of a stapler-assisted diverticulotomy performed by flexible *** November 2014 till December 2015 17 patients (8 female, 9 male, average age 69.8 years) with a symptomatic Zenker diverticulum (mean size 3.5 cm) were treated by inserting a new 5 mm fully rotatable surgical stapler (MicroCutter30 Xchange, Cardica Inc.) next to an ultrathin flexible endoscope through an overtube. The Patients were under conscious sedation with the head reclined in left position, the stapler placed centrally and pushed forward to the bottom of the diverticulum. The septum was divided by the staple rows under flexible endoscopic *** eleven patients (64.7%) the stapler successfully divided the septum completely. Mean procedure time was 21 min, medium size of the septum was 2.8 cm (range 1.5 cm to 4 cm). In four patients the septum was shorter than 3 cm, in seven longer than 3 cm. To divide the septum, averagely 1.3 stapler cartridges were used. Two minor bleedings occurred. Major adverse events like perforation or secondary haemorrhage did not occur. After an average time of two days patients were discharged from the hospital. In 6 patients (35.3%) the stapler failed due to a thick septum or insufficient reclination of the head. Follow up endoscopy was performed after an average of two months in 9 patients; 4 patients (44.4%) were free of symptoms, 5 patients (55.6%) stated an improvement. A relapse of symptoms did not *** endoscopic Zenker diverticulotomy by using a surgical stapler is a new, safe and efficient treatment modality. A simultaneously tissue opening and occlusion prevents major complications.

Aim: This study was performed to evaluate the movement of the proximal segment following different methods of ramus osteotomy that is one of the side effects of orthognathic surgery. Theoretically, with intraoral verticosagittal ramus osteotomy, it can minimize the movement of the proximal segment. The changes in the intergonal distance of mandible and the angle of the ramus flaring in two methods of osteotomy have been compared in this study. Materials and Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, included 60 patients (32 males) with mandibular prognathism and without any asymmetry were selected and divided into two groups (n = 30). One group underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy technique to achieve mandibular setback and the other by the intraoral verticosagittal ramus osteotomy technique. Intergonial width and inner-ramal angle in the transverse plane were measured on radiographs preoperatively and 1 and 12 weeks postoperatively. Data were analyzed using covariance test with the significance level set at P 0.1). Conclusion: Considering our findings, there was no significant difference between two ramus osteotomy techniques regarding changes in mandibular width and inter-ramal flaring angle.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a disseminated plasma cell tumor caused by the proliferation of a single plasma cell clone which results from the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin, most commonly class G (IgG). MM is a cancer of the elderly, with a mean age at diagnosis of 68 years. A 79-year-old white patient sought the outpatient clinic of the Discipline of Stomatology, S?o José dos Campos Dental School, UNESP, because of a fracture associated with an osteolytic lesion in the right ascending ramus of the mandible. In view of the clinical-radiographic findings, exploratory fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the lesion was performed and the sanguinolent material obtained was submitted to the preparations of smears for cytology analysis. The diagnosis of MM was based on laboratory and radiographic findings. FNA cytology analysis of the lesion permitted a diagnostic hypothesis of MM.
