Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analysis on the interaction between humic acids and aluminum coagulant

In this study, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy integrated with synchronous fluorescence and infrared absorption spectroscopy was employed to investigate the interaction between humic acids and aluminum coagulant at slightly acidic and neutral p H. Higher fluorescence quenching was produced for fulvic-like and humic-like fractions at p H 5. At p H 5, the humic-like fractions originating from the carboxylic acid, carboxyl and polysaccharide compounds were bound to aluminum first, followed by the fulvic-like fractions originating from the carboxyl and polysaccharide compounds. This finding also demonstrated that the activated functional groups of HA were involved in forming the Al-HA complex, which was accompanied by the removal of other groups by ***, at p H 7, almost no fluorescence quenching occurred, and surface complexation was observed to occur, in which the activated functional groups were absorbed on the amorphous Al（OH）3. Two-dimensional FT-IR correlation spectroscopy indicated the sequence of HA structural change during coagulation with aluminum, with IR bands affected in the order of COOH〉 COO-〉NH deformation of amide Ⅱ〉 aliphatic hydroxyl C／OH at p H 5, and COO-〉aliphatic hydroxyl C／OH at p H 7. This study provides a promising pathway for analysis and insight into the priority of functional groups in the interaction between organic matters and metal coagulants.

To solve the problem of shortened backwashing intervals in groundwater plants, several disinfectants including ozone（O3）, hydrogen peroxide（H2O2） and chlorine dioxide（Cl O2）were examined to peel off the film from the quartz sand surface in four pilot-scale *** optimized oxidant dosage and oxidation time were determined by batch ***, the optimized conditions were tested in the four pilot-scale columns. The results demonstrated that the backwashing intervals increased from 35.17 to 54.33（H2O2）and to 53.67 hr（ClO2） after the oxidation treatments, and the increase of backwashing interval after treatment by O3 was much less than for the other two ***, the treatment efficiency of filters was not affected by O3 or H2O2 oxidation;but after oxidation by ClO2, the treatment efficiency was deteriorated, especially the ammonia removal（from 96.96% to 24.95%）. The filter sands before and after the oxidation were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron *** with the oxidation by O3 and H2O2, the structures on the surface of filter sands were seriously damaged after oxidation by ClO2. The chemical states of manganese on the surfaces of those treated sands were only changed by ClO2. The damage of the structures and the change of the chemical states of manganese might have a negative effect on the ammonia removal. In summary, H2O2 is a suitable agent for film peeling.

The characteristics of effluent organic matter(EfOM) from a wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) during ozonation were investigated using excitation and emission matrix(EEM)spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and high-performance size exclusion chromatography(HPSEC) at different ozone dosages. The selectivity of ozonation towards different constituents and functional groups was analysed using two-dimensional correlation spectra(2D-COS) probed by FT-IR, synchronous fluorescence spectra and *** results indicated that ozonation can destroy aromatic structures of EfOM and change its molecular weight distribution(MWD). According to 2D-COS analysis, microbial humiclike substances were preferentially removed, and then the protein-like fractions. Terrestrial humic-like components exhibited inactivity towards ozonation compared with the above two fractions. Protein-like substances with small molecular weight were preferentially reacted during ozonation based on 2D-COS probed by HPSEC. In addition, the selectivity of ozone towards different functional groups of EfOM exhibited the following sequence:phenolic and alcoholic C\O groups > aromatic structures containing C_C double bonds >aliphatic C\H. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) further elucidated the preferential reaction of aromatic structures in EfOM during ozonation.

A cake layer is formed by coagulation aggregates under certain transmembrane pressure in the coagulation-microfiltration （MF） process. The characteristics of humic acid aggregates coagulated by different iron-based coagulants, such as charge, size, fractal dimension and compressibility, have an effect on the cake layer structure. At the optimum iron dose of 0.6 to 0.8 mmol/L for ferric chloride （FC） and polymer ferric sulfate （PFS） pre-coagulation, at the point of charge neutralization for near zero zeta potential, the aggregate particles produced possess the greatest size and highest fractal dimension, which contributes to the cake layer being most loose with high porosity and low compressibility. Thus the membrane filterability is better. At a low or high iron dose of FC and PFS, a high negative or positive zeta potential with high charge repulsion results in so many small aggregate particles and low fractal dimension that the cake layer is compact with low porosity and high compressibility. Therefore the membrane fouling is accelerated and MF permeability becomes worse. The variation of cake layer structure as measured by scanning electric microscopy corresponds with the fact that the smaller the coagulation flocs size and fractal dimension are, the lower the porosity and the tighter the cake layer conformation. This also explains the MF membrane flux variation visually and accurately.

Wastes yielded in the vintage process and the biological fermentation of itaconic acid and sodium gluconate of a winery in Shandong, such as grain stillage, melon lees, cornstarch protein residues, itacanic acid mother liquid, itaconic acid mycelium and sodium gluconate mycelium, were studied. High-activity biological protein feed, foliar fertilizer and irrigation fertilizer were generated from these wastes by applying biological/microbial technologies. Meanwhile, a whole set of technological pathways was put forward. As a result, the optimal economical and social benefits can be obtained with low natural resource consumption and environmental costs by converting wastes into useful matters. In conclusion, through the utilization of limited resources in the whole process of reclamation and utilization of wastes, the harmony promotion can be achieved between the economic system and the natural ecosystem.

The concept of SBCR was put forward to treat sauce wastewater. Further study showed that adding appropriate amount of calcium chloride to SBR can improve the quality of effluent. The removal rate of COD and color was 84% and 80%, 36%, 96% higher than those of traditional SBR respectively. The results of continuous experiments and biophase observing showed that calcium chloride accumulation increased the sludge production slightly while the sludge dewatering characteristic was improved.

The main application of hydrocyclones in most industry sectors is the separation of particles from *** thickening,however,the separation properties of the cyclone should be adjustable,which requires a different operating ***,we investigated an add-on thickening module,consisting of a conical plug and a secondary vortex finder in the underflow of the *** scale experiments are carried out to investigate the function of the concept of annular gap modification by the use of the thickening *** the second step,we transferred this concept to industrial scale for field tests at a municipal wastewater treatment *** the field tests,geometrical properties(annular gap modification)and operational parameters(volume flow rate,sludge type)were *** results show that thickening in terms of increasing the total solids content of sludge is possible with the modified *** the field tests,a thickening factor(total solids content of thickened sludge related to feed sludge)of 1.31(average)was reached for digested ***,a hydrocyclone could be a promising addition in wastewater treatment plants for dewatering of sludge.

Based on the characteristics of heat transfer for corrugated pipe,a method of calculating and design on the submersible corrugated pipe sewage heat exchanger was put forward theoretically and *** actual movement parameters of air-conditioning system used in this heat exchanger were *** experimental result shows that the quantity of heat transfer of the corrugated pipe sewage heat exchanger can satisfy the building's load with the average coefficient of performance *** the same time,the quantity of heat transfer of the corrugated pipe sewage heat exchanger was compared with that of the other nonmetallic sewage heat exchangers(i.e.,the plastic-Al pipe sewage heat exchanger and PP-R pipe sewage heat exchanger)*** is found out that the effect of heat transfer for submersible corrugated pipe sewage heat exchanger is superior to those of the plastic-Al pipe and the PP-R *** quantity of heat transfer per mile of corrugated pipe sewage heat exchanger is 5.2 times as much as that of the plastic-Al pipe,and it is 8.1 times as much as that of PP-R pipe.

A novel approach to treat combined domestic wastewater and excess sludge in MBR

Domestic wastewater was treated by combined anaerobic biofilm aerobic membrane bioreactor(MBR) process, and part biomass in MBR was withdrawn to treat with ozone, then the ozonated sludge was returned to anaerobic inlet. In aerobic MBR, MLSS and DO were controlled at 3000—3500 mg/L and 0 8 mg/L respectively. Comparing the experimental results of two stages, it was noticed that ozonation did not affect the removal efficiency for organics but had a significant influence on the removals of NH 3 N and TN. During the ozonation period of two months, no excess sludge was wasted, and a zero sludge yield was obtained.
