This study introduces an advanced finite element model for the light weight deflectometer(LWD),which integrates contact mechanics with fully coupled *** simulating LWD tests on granular soils at various saturation levels,the model accurately reflects the dependence of the LWD modulus on dry density,water content,and effective *** model addresses and overcomes the limitations of previous finite element models for this specific ***,this research presents the first experimentally validated fully coupled contact impact ***,the research provides a comparative assessment of elastoplastic and nonlinear elastic models and contrasts an enriched node-tosegment method(developed in this study)with the more precise mortar technique for contact *** comparisons reveal unique advantages and challenges for each ***,the study underscores the importance of careful application of the LWD modulus,emphasising the need for sophisticated tools to interpret soil behaviour accurately.

The collapse of granular material in fluids is a prevalent phenomenon in both natural and industrial processes,displaying a notable sensitivity to initial configuration of the *** study is specifically oriented towards falling process of collapsing material under various fluid conditions,employing the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method(CFD-DEM)to primarily investigate the dy-namics and scaling laws of deposit morphology of collapsed *** a comprehensive analysis of particle sedimentation in fluids,we introduce a refined inertial characteristic time for granular collapse within the inertial ***,we propose modifications to conventional fluid-particle density ratio and Reynolds number,aiming to enhance the accuracy of depicting collapse dy-namics and identifying flow regimes across diverse column heights and fluid ***,we construct a phase diagram of flow regimes using modified dimensionless numbers,emphasizing the role of column height in transition between viscous and inertial *** parameters demonstrate enhanced relevance in governing the collapse of immersed granular columns,thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of fluid-particle interations in dense granular flows under different regimes.

The sloshing in a group of rigid cylindrical tanks with baffles and on soil foundation under horizontal excitation is studied *** solutions for the velocity potential are derived out by the liquid subdomain *** models with mass-spring oscillators are established to replace continuous *** with the least square technique,Chebyshev polynomials are employed to fit horizontal,rocking and horizontal-rocking coupling impedances of soil,respectively.A lumped parameter model for impedance is presented to describe the effects of soil on tank structures.A mechanical model for the soil-foundation-tank-liquid-baffle system with small amount of calculation and high accuracy is proposed using the substructure *** analytical solutions are in comparison with data from reported literature and numerical codes to validate the effectiveness and correctness of the *** dynamic properties and seismic responses of the soil-tank system are given for the baffle number,size and location as well as soil parameter.

The initial micro-cracks affect the evolution characteristics of macroscopic deformation and failure of rock but are often ignored in theoretical calculation,numerical simulation,and mechanical *** this study,we propose a quantitative analysis model to investigate the effects of initial micro-cracks on the evolution of marble deformation and *** relationship between the micro-crack propagation and the marble failure characteristics was comprehensively studied by combining theoretical analysis with a micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)scanning *** found that with the increase of confining pressure,the matrix elastic modulus of the marble first increased and then tended to be stable,while the micro-cracks increased *** sensitivity ranges of the marble sample matrix elastic modulus and micro-cracks to confining pressure were 0–30 MPa and 30–50 MPa,*** porosity and Poisson’s ratio decreased *** increasing proportion of internal micro-cracks led to an increase in the sample *** samples presented mainly shear failure under triaxial compression,and the failure angle decreased linearly with the increase of confining *** convergence direction of cracks decreased *** quantitative analysis model could accurately portray the relationship between the overall macroscopic deformation and the deviatoric stress of the samples at the compaction and the linear elastic stages,thus deepening the understanding of the stress–strain behavior of rocks.

The damage evolution process of non-penetrating cracks often causes some unexpected engineering *** specimens containing non-penetrating crack(s)are used to study the damage evolution and characteristics under cyclic *** results show that under cyclic loading,the relationship between the number of non-penetrating crack(s)and the characteristic parameters(cyclic number,peak stress,peak strain,failure stress,and failure strain)of the pre-cracked specimens can be represented by a decreasing linear *** damage evolution equation is fitted by calibrating the accumulative plastic strain for each cycle,and the damage constitutive equation is proposed by the concept of effective ***,non-penetrating cracks are more likely to cause uneven stress distribution,damage accumulation,and local failure of *** local failure can change the stress distribution and relieve the inhibition of non-penetrating crack extension and eventually cause a dramatic destruction of the ***,the evolution process caused by non-penetrating cracks can be regarded as one of the important reasons for inducing *** results are expected to improve the understanding of the process of spalling formation and rockburst and can be used to analyze the stability of rocks or rock structures.

In this paper,the numerical simulation method is used to study the ballistic performances of hourglass lattice sandwich structures with the same mass under the vertical incidence of *** is paid to elucidating the influences of rod cross-section dimensions,structure height,structure layer,and rod inclination angle on the deformation mode,ballistic performances,and ability to change the ballistic direction of *** results show that the ballistic performances of hourglass lattice sandwich structures are mainly affected by their structural *** this respect,structural parameters optimization of the hourglass lattice sandwich structures enable one to effectively improve their ballistic limit velocity and,consequently,ballistic performances.

A seismic-induced landslide is a common geological catastrophe that occurs in *** Wangjiayan landslide,which was triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake,is a typical case in *** Wanjiayan landslide caused many casualties and resulted in enormous property *** study constructs a simple surficial failure model based on the upper bound approach of three-dimensional(3D)limit analysis to evaluate the slope stability of the Wangjiayan case,while a traditional two-dimensional(2D)analysis is also conducted as a reference for comparison with the results of the 3D analysis.A quasi-static calculation is used to study the effect of the earthquake in terms of horizontal ground acceleration,while a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the critical cohesion of *** than employing a 3D analysis,using the 2D analysis yields an underestimation regarding the safety *** the Wangjiayan landslide,the difference in the factors of safety between the 3D and 2D analyses can reach 20%.The sliding surface morphology as determined by the 3D method is similar to actual morphology,and the parameters of both are also compared to analyze the reliability of the proposed 3D method.

Inspired by nature,various biomimetic materials have been synthesized for enhanced mechanical properties,among which composites with brick-and-mortar structures attract the most *** such bio-inspired composites,the matrix layer mainly functions to transfer load between bricks through shearing,while the shear stress in the matrix is not uniform but highly concentrated on the interface ends,which tends to initiate cracks and evoke interface delamination in *** enhance the composites’resistance to interface delamination,we propose to homogenize the shear stress by adopting a matrix with a gradient modulus.A theoretical solution to the optimal gradient modulus of the matrix layer is obtained,followed by computational ***,composites with such functionally graded matrices are further demonstrated to possess higher elastic limits,higher resilience,and flaw tolerance than the uniform *** results of this paper should be of great value to the design and synthesis of advanced structural materials for superior mechanical performance.

Traveling wave piezoelectric beam actuators(TWPBAs)present an advantageous structural configuration for self-moving actuators and hold significant promise for operation in confined ***,current research on TWPBAs faces several limitations,including deficient design methods of excitation and structural parameters,inadequate evaluation metrics,and lack of a quantitative relationship between these parameters and evaluation *** study presents a systematic approach to determining TWPBAs'structure and excitation parameters,proposes criteria for determining the excitation parameters through an established analytical model,and introduces an effective evaluation method for TWPBAs'*** the analytical model and evaluation metrics,we reveal:(1)the coupling relationship between excitation parameters and structural parameters,(2)the influence of participating mode pairs on vibration response,(3)the quantitative relationship between the evaluation metrics and excitation parameters is also *** conclusions are substantiated by the results of finite element analysis,laser vibration measurements,and motion test ***,the practical application of TWPBAs in pipeline operations underscores their potential for use in endoscopy and precision instruments.
