Investigation on the effectiveness of pretreatment in stormwater management technologies

The effectiveness of presettling basins as component of stormwater best management practice （BMP） technologies was investigated. Storm event monitoring and sediment collection were conducted from May 2009 to November 2012 on the presettling basins of the three BMP technologies designed to capture and treat stormwater runoff from highly impervious roads and parking lots. Data on captured runoff and sediment, total suspended solids （TSS） loadings, rainfall and runoff rate, sediment accumulation rate, as well as particle distribution and pollutant concentrations of sediment were gathered and analyzed along with the physical design characteristics of the presettling basins such as surface area and storage volume. Regression models were generated to determine significant relationships between design parameters. Results revealed that the storage volume ratio （ratio of storage volume of presettling basin to BMP） was an important parameter in designing the presettling basin of the BMP. For practicality, optimizing the design of the presetfling basin means that the storage volume ratio should be determined based on the desired captured amount of runoff and sediment from runoff to limit the frequency of maintenance caused by the accumulation of sediment. It was recommended that pretreatment of runoff should be employed when the site in which the BMP is to be sited has high TSS loading and runoff rate, and is subjected to high intensity rainfall.

Results are presented for experiments of bed-load sediment transport over a plane,smooth *** smooth-bed configuration,though not adequate for mimicking natural streams,enables the effects of bed roughness to be filtered out,thus,highlighting the role of flow turbulence for particle *** were individually tracked along their paths,measuring position and velocity of the individual grains.A number of analyses were then applied to the data:probability density function,auto-correlation,and spectra of the grain *** Lagrangian time scales of particle motion were obtained and compared to available data for the turbulent flow field to determine a phenomenological interpretation of the process.

This work presented the development and validation of an analytical method to predict the transient temperature field in the asphalt *** governing equation for heat transfer was based on heat conduction radiation and *** innovative time-dependent function was proposed to predict the pavement surface temperature with solar radiation and air temperature using dimensional analysis in order to simplify the complex heat exchange on the pavement *** parameters for the time-dependent pavement surface temperature function were obtained through the regression analysis of field measurement *** that the initial pavement temperature distribution was linear and the influence of the base course materials on the temperature of the upper asphalt layers was negligible,a close-form analytical solution of the temperature in asphalt layers was derived using Green's ***,two numerical examples were presented to validate the model solutions with field temperature *** results show that the solution accuracy is in agreement with field data and the relative errors at a shallower depth are greater than those at a deeper *** the model is not sensitive to dramatic changes in climatic factors near the pavement surface,it is applicable for predicting pavement temperature field in cloudless days.

Recently,ambient vibration test(AVT)is widely used tu estimate dynamic characteristics of large civil struc- *** characteristics ean be affected by various envirnnmental factors such as humidity,intensity of wind,and *** these environmental conditions,tire mass of vehicles may change the measured valnes when traffic-in- duced vibration is used as a source of AVT tor *** effect of vehicle mass on dynamic characteristics is investigated through traffic-induced vibration tests on three bridges;(1)three-span suspension bridge(128m+404m+128m),(2) five-span continuous steel box girder bridge(59m+3@ 95m+59m),(3)simply supported plate girder bridge(46m). Acceleration histories of each measurement location under normal traffic are recorded for 30 minutes at *** recor- ded histories are divided into individual vibrations and are combined into two groups aceording to the level of vibration;one by heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses and the other by light vehicles such as passenger *** processing of the two groups of signals shows that,for the middle and long-span bridges,the difference can be hardly detected,but,for the short span bridges whose mass is relatively small,the measured natural frequencies can change up to 5.4%.

One of the founders of structural control theory and its application in civil engineering, Professor Emeritus Tsu T. Soong, envisioned the development of the integral design of structures protected by active control devices. Most of his disciples and colleagues continuously attempted to develop procedures to achieve such integral control. In his recent papers published jointly with some of the authors of this paper, Professor Soong developed design procedures for the entire structure using a design - redesign procedure applied to elastic systems. Such a procedure was developed as an extension of other work by his disciples. This paper summarizes some recent techniques that use traditional active control algorithms to derive the most suitable （optimal, stable） control force, which could then be implemented with a combination of active, passive and semi-active devices through a simple match or more sophisticated optimal procedures. Alternative design can address the behavior of structures using Liapunov stability criteria. This paper shows a unified procedure which can be applied to both elastic and inelastic structures. Although the implementation does not always preserve the optimal criteria, it is shown that the solutions are effective and practical for design of supplemental damping, stiffness enhancement or softening, and strengthening or weakening.

During the modernization or rehabilitation activity,the demolished structural waste causes large soil pollution and unavailability of natural aggregate is the big concern for the construction ***,this manuscript deals with the Composite Steel Circular Column(CSCC)with Recycled Aggregate concrete(RAC)as infill is partly used,with the replacement of 25%and 50%in M30 grade of *** internal reinforcement steel is fully replaced by rolled steel tubes(circular and square)with varied thickness,ISA-unequal *** 14 specimens are cast and examined under axial load for analysis of the deflection characteristics,the load-bearing capacity along with its buckling *** experimental values are estimated through LVDT(linear variable differential transducer)at *** curve of load-deflection is drawn with the load *** the date interpretation,it is found column made of 50%-RAC has more than 25%-RAC.

The growth in computer processing power has made it possible to use time-consuming analysis methods such as incremental dynamic analysis（IDA） with higher accuracy in less *** an IDA study,a series of earthquake records are applied to a structure at successively increasing intensity levels,which causes the structure to shift from the elastic state into the inelastic state and finally into *** this way,the limit-states and capacity of a structure can be *** the present research,the IDA of a concrete gravity dam considering a nonlinear concrete behavior,and sliding planes within the dam body and at the dam-foundation interface,is *** influence of the friction angle and lift joint slope on the response parameters are investigated and the various limit-states of the dam are *** is observed that by introducing a lift joint,the tensile damage can be avoided for the dam *** lift joint sliding is essentially independent of the base joint friction angle and the upper ligament over the inclined lift joint slides into the upstream direction in strong earthquakes.

Influences of ferrite content and iron ore powder content on electromagnetic wave absorbing property of porous concrete are *** radar cross section(RSC)of samples was tested in a microwave anechoic *** show that the optimum content of ferrite is 15%,and the minimum,maximum and average reflectivity of the sample is-46.60 dB,-10.84 dB and-23.75 dB,*** the sample's improved bandwidth is 8.2 *** optimum content of iron ore powder is 20%,and the minimum,maximum and average reflectivity of the sample is-34.69 dB,-9.25 dB and-20.69 dB,*** the sample's improved bandwidth is 6 *** conclusion,appropriate ferrite and iron ore powder can improve wave absorbing property and widen wave absorption bandwidth of porous concrete.
