Aim: To pursue whether cytogenetic aberrations correlate with specific spermatological or hormonal ***: 305 infertile couples were investigated. All male partners were referred to a complete andrological work-up with physical examination, determination of hormones, HIV testing and semen analysis. Cytogenetic analysis wascarded out in both partners by means of standard techniques using cultured lymphocytes from peripheral blood. Re-suits: Among the 305 couples, 10 men (3.2%) and 10 women (3.2%) showed constitutional chromosomal aber-rations, including reciprocal translocations (n = 7), Robertsonian translocations (n = 3), inversions (n = 3), otherstructural aberrations (n = 4) and sex chromosome aberrations (n = 3). In addition to the impaired sperm count inmost of the patients, a tendency to an increased proportion of spermatozoa with acrosome defect was observed. Con-clusion: Chromosomal aberrations may contribute to the low fertilization and pregnancy rates in the infertile couples.(Asian J Androl 2000 Dec; 2: 293-296)

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is the presence of a battery of cardiovascular risk factors including abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and disturbed carbohydrate metabolism[1]. MetS affects 20% of adults in the Western world and 33% of adults in China[2] and has become a serious public health problem worldwide. However, the mechanism underlying the occurrence and progression of MetS is still largely unclear. It is now well established that excess fat deposition leads to abdominal obesity, which plays a vital role in the underlying mechanism. Adipose tissue can function as an endocrine organ that secretes various adipokines. The dysregulated expression of adipokines caused by excess adiposity and adipocyte dysfunction, has been linked to the pathogenesis of MetS[3]. Some serum adipokines such as leptin, adiponectin, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), might be potential markers for MetS development.

Introduction:Osteoporosis and osteopenia are progressive disorders characterized by decreased bone mass,especially in postmenopausal *** can be associated with body pain,fractures,hearing loss and balance *** present study aims to evaluate audio-vestibular function in postmenopausal patients with osteopenia or ***:The study included 48 postmenopausal women(new subjects)diagnosed with osteoporosis(n=23)or osteopenia(n=25)in the age range of 50e66 years,as well as 28 normal women as *** testing included pure tone audiometry(conventional and extended high-frequency audiometry),speech audiometry,impedance audiometry and otoacoustic emissions,including both transient evoked otoacoustic emissions(TEOAEs)and distortion product otoacoustic emissions(DPOAEs).All subjects also underwent vestibular evoked myogenic potentials testing(both ocular and cervical VEMPs).Results:In the present study,hearing was worse at all frequencies in the osteoporosis group in comparison with the osteopenia and control groups,with worse speech recognition and discrimination scores and *** function was affected in 95.65%of women with osteoporosis and 76%of those with ***:Osteoporosis and osteopenia are risk factors for vestibular dysfunction and hearing deficits in postmenopausal ***,hearing and vestibular function should be monitored by audiological and vestibular testing periodically in these individuals.

Background. Patients with Turner’ s syndrome receiving unopposed estrogens for the induction of feminization have an increased risk of endometrial carcinoma. Only seven patients who were not treated with estrogen replacement therapy have been reported to have developed endometrial carcinoma at different age levels. Case. A young girl with Turner’ s syndrome phenotype, spontaneous puberty, and karyotype 45,X0/47,XXX from peripheral blood, after irregular menstrual cycles of 9 years, at the age of 21, was diagnosed with a non- invasive welldifferentiated endometrial carcinoma confined to a hyperplastic endometrial polyp. Analysis of the ovarian tissue by FISH confirmed mosaicism: 45,X0/46,XX/47,XXX. Conclusion(s)- . The endogenous estrogen secretion from the ovaries might have caused malignancy in this case. Patients with Turner’ s syndrome with spontaneous menarche might carry a higher risk of endometrial carcinoma.

Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is a rare disease that is characterized by delayed/absent puberty and/or infertility due to an insufficient stimulation of an otherwise normal pituitary-gonadal axis by gonadotrophin-releasing hormone （GnRH） action. Because reduced or normal luteinizing hormone （LH）/follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH） levels may be observed in the affected patients, the term idiopathic central hypogonadism （ICH） appears to be more appropriate. This disease should be distinguished from central hypogonadism that is combined with other pituitary deficiencies. Isolated ICH has a complex pathogenesis and ~s fivefold more prevalent in males. ICH frequently appears in a sporadic form, but several familial cases have also been reported. This finding, in conjunction with the description of numerous pathogenetic gene variants and the generation of several knockout models, supports the existence of a strong genetic component. ICH may be associated with several morphogenetic abnormalities, which include osmic defects that, with ICH, constitute the cardinal manifestations of Kallmann syndrome （KS）. KS accounts for approximately 40% of the total ICH cases and has been generally considered to be a distinct subgroup. However, the description of several pedigrees, which include relatives who are affected either with isolated osmic defects, KS, or normo-osmic ICH （nlCH）, justifies the emerging idea that ICH is a complex genetic disease that is characterized by variable expressivity and penetrance. In this context, either multiple gene variants or environmental factors and epigenetic modifications may contribute to the variable disease manifestations. We review the genetic mechanisms that are presently known to be involved in ICH pathogenesis and provide a clinical overview of the 227 cases that have been collected by the collaborating centres of the Italian ICH Network.

Context: B-type natriuretic peptides have been shown to predict cardiovascular disease in apparently healthy individuals but their predictive ability for mortality and future cardiovascular events compared with C-reactive protein(CRP) and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio is unknown. Objective: To assess the prognostic value of the N-amino terminal fragment of the prohormone brain natriuretic peptide(NT-proBNP) vs CRP and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio in an older adult population. Design, Setting, and Participants: A population-based prospective study of 764 participants aged 50 to 89 years from a community in Copenhagen, Denmark, in which 658 participants provided blood and urinary samples and were examined between September 1, 1998, and January 24, 2000. Of these participants, 626 without heart or renal failure were enrolled. A subgroup of 537 had no history of cardiovascular disease at baseline. During 5 years of follow-up(to December 31, 2003), 94 participants died and 65 developed a first major cardiovascular event. Main Outcome Measures: Risk of mortality and first major cardiovascular event by baseline levels of NT-proBNP, CRP, and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio levels. Results After adjustment for the cardiovascular risk factors of age, sex, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension or ischemic heart disease, total cholesterol, and serum creatinine, the hazard ratio(HR) of mortality for values above the 80th percentile of NT-proBNP was 1.96(95%confidence interval CI , 1.21-3.19); for CRP, 1.46(95%CI, 0.89-2.24); and for urinary albumin/creatinine ratio, 1.88(95%CI, 1.18-2.98). Additional adjustment for left ventricular systolic dysfunction did not markedly attenuate the predictive value of NT-proBNP(HR, 1.82; 95%CI, 1.11-2.98). The absolute unadjusted increase in mortality risk for participants with values above the 80th percentile vs equal to or below the 80th percentile was 24.5%for NT-proBNP, 7.8%for CRP, and 19.5%for urinary albumin/creatinine ratio.
