Three kinds of methods for processing the data of the multi-wavelength pyrometer are presented in this paper and are named curve auto-search method, curve auto-regression method and neural network method. Tbe experimental results indicate that the calculated temperature and the spectral emissivity compared with the true target temperature and spectral emissivity have significant deviation using the curve auto-search and the curve auto-regression methods. However, the calculated temperature and the spectral emissivity with higher accuracy can be obtained using the neural network method.

The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was used to study the free-surface turbulent channel flow with passive heat transfer. The three-dimensional filtered incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation were numerically solved with dynamic Subgrid Scale (SGS) models for modeling turbulent stresses and heat flux. To compare the turbulent behavior of the free-surface and two-walled channel flows, the LES of two-walled turbulent channel flow was performed. The statistical quantities and flow structures of the free-surface turbulence with heat transfer in the vicinity of the free-surface were investigated. The results are also in good agreement with theoretical analysis and available results by Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS).

Background: ECG is a useful tool in monitoring vital functions in patients wi th acute stroke; however, fairly little evidence is available concerning the pre valence and the prognostic impact of ECG findings in patients with acute cerebra l infarction and acute intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). Methods: This analysis w as based on data from 692 patients with acute cerebral infarction, 155 patients with intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH), and 223 patients with transient ischaemic attack (TIA), who were admitted to hospital within 6 h of symptom onset. A 12 le ad ECG was obtained on admission, and the patient was on telemetry for the first 12- 24 h of hospitalisation. Results: ECG abnormalities were observed in 60% of patients with cerebral infarction, 50% of patients with ICH, and 44% of patients with TIA. In multivariate analyses 3- month mortality in patients with ischaemic stroke was predicted by atrial fibrillation OR 2.0 (95% CI 1.3- 3. 1), atrio- ventricular block OR 1.9 (95% CI 1.2- 3.9), ST- elevation OR (2. 8, 95% CI 1.3- 6.3), ST- depression OR 2.5 (95% CI 1.5- 4.3), and inverte d T- waves OR 2.7 (95% CI 1.6- 4.6). This was independent of stroke severity , pre- stroke disability and age. In patients with ICH, sinus tachycardia OR 4. 8 (95% CI 1.7- 14.0), ST- depression OR 5.2 (95% CI 1.1- 24.9), and inver ted T- wave 5.2 (95% CI 1.2- 22.5) predicted poor outcome. None of the chang es reached significance in patients with TIA. In patients with severe cerebral i nfarction or ICH, heart rate did not decrease within the first 12 h after admiss ion, which was the case in patients with mild to moderate stroke. Rapid heart ra te predicted 3- month mortality in multivariate testing OR 1.7 (95% CI 1.02- 2.7). Conclusions: ECG abnormalities are frequent in acute stroke and may predi ct 3- month mortality.

Background: Amino-penicillins are a major cause of delayedtype reactions to penicillins. Objectives The aim of this study was to establish a diagnostic app roach for the characterization of the individual penicillin-specific polyclona l lymphocyte reactivity in order to detect side chain-specific sensitization t o amino-penicillins. Patients can then be advised to undergo a tolerance test with safe penicillins instead of provocation with culprit penicillins for confir mation of penicillin allergy. Methods: We investigated penicillin-specific pol yclonal lymphocyte reactivity in nine patients with delayed-type reactions to amino-penicillins by a combined in vivo (patch, prick and intracutaneous tests with delayed readings) and in vitro (lym-phocyte transformation test, LTT) ap proach. Results: A combination of LTT and skin tests improved the sensitivity fo r the characterization of penicillin-specific polyclonal lymphocyte reactivity and allowed the detection of three different patterns of lymphocyte reactivity. Four patients showed a side chain-specific sensitization to amino-penicilli ns in vivo and in vitro and were advised to undergo tolerance tests with safe pe nicillins. Two patients agreed and were exposed to parenteral benzyl-penicilli n and oral phenoxymethyl-penicillin which they tolerated without complications . Conclusions: These data suggest that a combined in vivo and in vitro approach is helpful for the detection of side chain-specific sensitization to aminopeni cillins. Patients with such sensitization are very likely to tolerate safe penic illins, thereby expanding their therapeutic options when antibiotic treatment is required.

The paper studied the effect of Ni-Fe-C filler materials on the η phase formation during TIG welding of WC-30Co and 45 steel. η phase’s morphology and forming condition were discussed using BEI method. The properties of the weld joints were also measured using microhardness measurement and four-point bending measurement. The results show that the weld joints of WC-30Co/45 steel can be obtained by TIG welding using different Ni-Fe-C materials as filler materials, and η phase formed in the joints is M 6C, M 12 C type carbides. The poor carbon content of the W-Co-C system resulted from the C diffusion and the high ingredient Fe are the two vital factors inducing to η phase formation. It can be restricted by the addition of C element into Ni-Fe material. When carbon content is 0.01% in filler material, bend strength σ bb of weld joint is 908 MPa. However, when carbon content increases to 0.41% in filler material, bend strength σ bb is 1 260 MPa.

Objectives: To determine the pre-malignant and malignant potential o f endomet rial polyps and to assess whether different clinical parameters are associated w ith malignancy in the polyps. Study design: Four hundred and thirty consecutive cases of hysteroscopic diagnosis of endometrial polyp were retriev ed. The medical records, preoperative vaginal sonography results and histopathol ogy findings were reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed. Results: Hystero scopy truly identi-fied endometrial polyps in 95.7%of the cases. In 11.4%case s, hyperplasia without atypia was found in the endometrial polyp. In 3.3 and 3.0 %of women pre-malignant or malignant conditions were found in the polyp. Older age, menopause status and polyps larger than 1.5 cm were associated with signif icant pre-malignant or malignant changes, although the positive predictive valu e for malignancy was low. All the malignant polyps were diagnosed only in postme nopausal women. The presence of postmenopausal or irregular vaginal bleeding, wa s not a predictor of malignancy in the polyp. Conclusions: Postmenopausal women with endometrial polyps are at increased risk of malignancy in the polyp. Those patients, whether symptomatic or not should be evaluated by hysteroscopic resect ion of the polyps. Asymptomatic premenopausal patients with polyps smaller than 1.5 cm can be observed.

Biochar(BC)has gained attention for removal of toxic elements(TEs)from aqueous media;however,pristine biochar often exhibits low adsorption ***,various modification strategies in BC have been developed to improve its removal capability against *** zero-valent iron(nZVI)and iron oxides(FeOx)have been used as sorbents for TE ***,these materials are prone to agglomeration and also expensive,which make their usage limited for large-scale *** nZVI technical demerits could be resolved by the development of BC-based composite sorbents through the loading of nZVI or FeOx onto BC *** zero-valent iron modified BC(nZVIBC),FeOx-modified BC(FeOxBC)have attracted attention for their capability in removing pollutants from the aqueous ***,a potential use of nZVIBC and FeOxBC for TE removal from aqueous environments has not been well-realized or *** such,this article reviews:(i)the preparation and characterization of nZVIBC and FeOxBC;(ii)the capacity of nZVIBC and FeOxBC for TE retention in line with their physicochemical properties,and(iii)TE removal mechanisms by nZVIBC and *** nZVI and FeOx in BC increases its sporptive capability of TEs due to surface modifications in morphology,functional groups,and elemental *** combined effects of BC and nZVI,FeOx or Fe salts on the sorption of TEs are complex because they are very specific to *** review identified significant opportunities for research and technol-ogy advancement of nZVIBC and FeOxBC as novel and effective sorbents for the remediation of TEs contaminated water.

Previous reports have suggested an association between the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin- converting enzyme (ACE), cardiovascular disease, and cognitive performance. No rmal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is considered to be an example of reversible d ementia although the clinical improvement after shunting varies from subject to *** association has been suggested between vascular risk factors and the development of NPH. The ACE plays a major role in vascular pathology and physiol ogy. In the present study we investigated the distribution of an ACE gene insert ion/deletionpolymorphism in 112 patients diagnosed with NPH and in 124 controls. We also evaluated the role of this geneticpolymorphism in cognitive functioning before and following surgery in a subgroup of 72 patients. No differences in ge neticor allele distributions were found between patients and healthy subjects, b ut among patients, carriers of D/D or D/I genotypes obtained less cognitive bene fit following shunt surgery, especially on measures of memory and frontal functi on. Our data support previous findings in other conditions indicating that posse ssion of at least one D allele is associated with poorer cognitive performance.
