The design and implementation of EATS, a machine translation system for e-mail, are presented. It first puts forward the notion of “instant machine translation service" and illustrates how it is provided through client-server mode in EATS. Then this paper gives a panoramic view of the realization of Chinese-English bi-directional translation module through multi-engine strategy. The prototype of the system has been successfully demonstrated in campus net in PPP mode, with 70%～80% translation accuracy.

Decentralized and unstructured peer-to-peer applications such as Gnutella are attractive because they require no centralized directories and no precise control over network topology or data placement. Search algorithm is the major component of the distributed system and its efficiency also does influence the systems performance. However the flooding-based query algorithm used in Gnutella produces huge traffic and does not scale well. Gnutella-like P2P topology has power-law characteristic, so a search algorithm was proposed based on high degree nodes of power-law network, High Degree Nodes-Based Search （HDNBS）. Extensive simulation results show that this algorithm performs on power-law networks very well, achieves almost 100% success rates, produces O（logN） messages per query and can locate target file within O（lagN） hops.

In order to solve the problem of significant fluctuation of workload at each node, a new approach is proposed for acquisition of load parameter for Now, a network of heterogeneous computational resource. The current methods in use for acquisition of workload are reviewed for comparison and the implemention of prediction model is described in detail. It is concluded from the analysis of experimental results that the prediction method takes less time and has better predictability, and it gives a beneficial support to task scheduling and dynamic load balance.

A transformer-based CMOS power amplifier （PA） is linearized using an analog predistortion technique for a 2.5-GHz m-WiMAX transmitter. The third harmonic of the power stage and driver stage can be cancelled out in a specific power region. The two-stage PA fabricated in a standard 0.18-#m CMOS process delivers 27.5 dBm with 27% PAE at the 1-dB compression point （PldB） and offers 21 dB gain. The PA achieves 5.5 % EVM and meets the spectrum mask at 20.5 dBm average power. Another conventional PA with a zero-cross-point of gm3 bias is also fabricated and compared to prove its good linearity and efficiency.

It is concluded from the results of testing the frequency characteristics of the sub micron precision machine tool servo control system, that the existence of several oscillating modalities is the main factor that affects the performance of the control system. To compensate for this effect,several concave filters are utilized in the system to improve the control accuracy. The feasibility of compensating for several oscillating modalities with a single concave filter is also studied. By applying a modified Butterworth concave filter to the practical system, the maximum stable state output error remains under ±10 nm in the closed loop positioning system.

Software reliability was estimated based on NHPP software reliability growth models. Testing reliability and operational reliability may be essentially different. On the basis of analyzing similarities and differences of the testing phase and the operational phase, using the concept of operational reliability and the testing reliability, different forms of the comparison between the operational failure ratio and the predicted testing failure ratio were conducted, and the mathematical discussion and analysis were performed in detail. Finally, software optimal release was studied using software failure data. The results show that two kinds of conclusions can be derived by applying this method, one conclusion is to continue testing to meet the required reliability level of users, and the other is that testing stops when the required operational reliability is met, thus the testing cost can be reduced.

We propose a fuzzy logic-based image retrieval system, in which the image similarity can be inferred in a nonlinear manner as human thinking. In the fuzzy inference process, weight assignments of multi-image features were resolved impliedly. Each fuzzy rule was embedded into the subjectivity of human perception of image contents. A color histogram called the average area histogram is proposed to represent the color features. Experimental results show the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed algorithms.

We study the problem of centralized exact repair of multiple failures in distributed *** present constructions that achieve a new set of interior points under exact repair. The constructions build upon the layered code construction by Tian et al., designed for exact repair of single failure. We firstly improve upon the layered construction for general system parameters. Then, we extend the improved construction to support the repair of multiple failures, with varying number of helpers. In particular, for some parameters, we prove the optimality of one point in terms of the storage size and the repair bandwidth for multiple erasures. Finally, considering minimum bandwidth cooperative repair(MBCR) codes as centralized repair codes, we determine explicitly the best achievable region obtained by space-sharing among all known points, including the MBCR point.

Improving the network interface performance is needed by the demand of applications with high communication requirements （for example, some multimedia, real-time, and high-performance computing applications）, and the availability of network links providing multiple gigabits per second bandwidths that could require many processor cycles for communication tasks. Multicore architectures, the current trend in the microprocessor development to cope with the difficulties to further increase clock frequencies and microarchitecture efficiencies, provide new opportunities to exploit the parallelism available in the nodes for designing efficient communication architectures. Nevertheless, although present OS network stacks include multiple threads that make it possible to execute network tasks concurrently in the kernel, the implementations of packet-based or connection-based parallelism are not trivial as they have to take into account issues related with the cost of synchronization in the access to shared resources and the efficient use of caches. Therefore, a common trend in many recent researches on this topic is to assign network interrupts and the corresponding protocol and network application processing to the same core, as with this affinity scheduling it would be possible to reduce the contention for shared resources and the cache misses. In this paper we propose and analyze several configurations to distribute the network interface among the different cores available in the server. These alternatives have been devised according to the affinity of the corresponding communication tasks with the location （proximity to the memories where the different data structures are stored） and characteristics of the processing core. As this approach uses several cores to accelerate the communication path of a given connection, it can be seen as complementary to those that consider several cores to simultaneously process packets belonging to either the same or different connections.
