The focus of this study was to investigate the macroinvertebrate community in surface mine wetlands. Nine wetlands were sampled for macroinvertebrates from July 1993 through May *** sites represented a range of physical,chemical, and biological parameters. Macroinvertebrates were found in all sites;a total of 14 orders, 40 families,and 70 genera were identified in the samples. Insects were the most common invertebrates,and most functional feeding groups were represented. Predators dominated with 63% of the taxa, followed by the collector/gathers with 20%,shredders 14%, and scrapers 3%. Sites differed in the number of taxa inhabiting *** ranged from 10 genera to *** lowest richness was found in two seasonal wetlands that were dry for the majority of the year. A permanently flooded site with no water quality problems and a dense growth of aquatic plants had the highest richness.

Results demonstrate that calcineurin plays a role in long term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus. A 45 ku enzyme was administered, which exhibits Ca 2+/calmodulin independent activity to rats, and the protein components of nuclear extracts from the cell-free system of rat hippocampus were tested. It is found that the level of a component significantly increased in nuclear extracts following the activation of calcineurin. The concentration of the component in the nucleus is also markedly increased following hippocampal LTP elicited by ginsenosides. These results suggest that the activation of calcineurin induces a pre-existing protein component to translocate to the nucleus in the hippocampus. The nuclear translocation of the component may be required for LTP in the hippocampus.

The induction of apoptosis in suspension culture of tobacco cells by heat shock is reported for the first time. Heat treatment (48℃ for 4 h) of tobacco cells led to the appearance of typical hallmarks of apoptosis. It was demonstrated by DNA laddering analysis that the cells treated with heat shock at 48℃ for 4 h had a serious degradation of nuclear DNA into multi-nu-cleosomal sizes, suggesting that heat shock activated endogenous nuclease which led to DNA cleavage at the linkage sites between the nucleosomes, but ladders were very faint for DNA from 2 and 9 h heat-treated cells. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) detection also showed that most of these treated cells (48℃ for 4 h) displayed positive reactions, indicating a serious DNA 3’-OH cleavage in their nuclei. Four centromeric segments from B chromosomes (Bs) of rye have been microdis-sected and amplified by linker adapter PCR (LA-PCR). The PCR products ranged from 100 to 2 000 bp. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiment has been carried out using PCR products as the probe, which was labeled by DIG-11-dUTP. The result confirms that these PCR products from Bs centromeric region are homologous with that of A chromosomes (As) in rye. It also proves that Bs are originated from As.
