BACKGROUND： Anti-epilepsy and anti-psychosis drugs have traditionally been used in the clinic to treat epilepsy complicated by mental disorders. However, there is still no effective therapy for refractory epilepsy patients suffering from persistent mental disorders. OBJECTIVE： To explore the therapeutic effects of stereotactic multi-element localization and multi-target radiofrequency ablation on patients with refractory primary epilepsy and mental disorders. DESIGN： A retrospective case analysis. SETTING： Department of Neurosurgery, the 454 Hospital of Chinese PLA. PARTICIPANTS： Between June and November 2004, 13 patients with refractory primary epilepsy complicated by persistent mental disorders were admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery, the 454 Hospital of Chinese PLA. The patient group consisted of nine males and four females, with an average age of 25 years （range 18-39 years）, and a course of disease ranging 3-11 years. Diagnosis of mental disorders was in accordance with Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients and their families, and the treatment protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Hospital. METHODS： Under venous inhalation anesthesia, the disease targets, including bilateral corpus callosum, bilateral amygdala, and bilateral medial septal area, as well as unilateral Forel-H area, were coagulated by RFG-3CF radiofrequency thermocoagnlation at 75-80 ℃ for 60-70 seconds. During thermocoagulation, the targets were identified using deep-brain microelectrodes and localized according to electrophysiology and electric resistance values. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： One year post-surgery, epileptic seizures were assessed on the basis of the Tan classification, and psychogenic （non-epileptic） seizures were evaluated using a 5-grade system. A series of polymeric complexes were prepared from Fe^2＋, Co^2＋ or Ni^2＋ and poly（Schiff base）（DAPcIPA）, which was obtained by polycondensation of 5,6-diamino-1,10-phenanthroline （DAP） with isophthalaldehyde （IPA）. The structures of the polymer and the polymeric complexes were characterized by IR, 1^H-NMR and elemental analysis. The magnetic behavior of these complexes was measured as a function of magnetic field strength （0-3.98 ~ 106 A/m） at 5 K and as a function of temperature （5-300 K） at a magnetic field strength of 2.39 × 10^6 A/re. Experimental results show that DAPcIPA-Ni^2＋, DAPcIPA-Co^2＋ are soft ferromagnets while DAPcIPA-Fe^2＋ exhibits features of an antiferromagnet.

Stability and diffusion properties of self-interstitial atoms in tungsten:a first-principles investigation

Employing a first-principles method based on the density function theory, we systematically investigate the structures, stability and diffusion of self-interstitial atoms （SIAs） in tungsten （W）. The （111 〉 dumbbell is shown to be the most stable SIA defect configuration with the formation energy of -9.43 eV. The on-site rotation modes can be described by a quite soft floating mechanism and a down-hill ＂drift＂ diffusion process from （110） dumbbell to 〈111〉 dumbbell and from （001） dumbbell to 〈110〉 dumbbell, respectively. Among different SIA configurations jumping to near neighboring site, the 〈111 〉 dumbbell is more preferable to migrate directly to first-nearest-neighboring site with a much lower energy barrier of 0.004 eV. These resuits provide a useful reference for W as a candidate plasma facing material in fusion Tokamak.

Objective： The inhibition of the neovascularization in tumors is a potential therapeutic target of cancer. Vascular endothelial growth inhibitor （VEGI） is a member of the TNF superfamily which has the ability to suppress the formation of new vessels in tumors. In order to study the association between VEGI gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk, a case-control study was conducted in Chinese Han women in Northeast China. Methods： Our study involved 708 female breast cancer patients and 685 healthy volunteers. Four SNPs of VEGI gene were analyzed through the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism （PCR-RFLP） method. The association between VEGI gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk was analyzed in our study. The relation between VEGI gene variants and clinical features of breast cancer including lymph node （LN） metastasis, esl^ogen receptor （ER）, progestrogen receptor （PR）, tumor protein 53 （1953）, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 （Her-2） and triple negative （ER-/PR-/Her-2-） status was analyzed as well. Results： We found that the CT genotype and T allele of rs6478106 were more frequent in patients than in controls. There was also a statistical difference in the distribution of Crs6478106Grs4263839 haplotype between patients and controls. In addition, SNP rs6478106 and rs4979462 were related with the Her-2 status. Conclusions： Our results suggest that VEGI gene variants may be related to the breast cancer risk and the clinical features of breast cancer in Chinese Han women in Northeast China.

High ash thermal coal from India was used to conduct the dry processing of fine coal using a pneumatic table to evolve a techno-economically novel technique. The fine as-received sample having 55.2g ash was subjected to washability studies at variant densities from 1.4 to 2.2 to assess the amenability to separa- tion. The experiments were conducted using a central composite design for assessing the interactive effects of the variable parameters of a pneumatic table on the product yield and ash content. The performance of the pneumatic table was analyzed in terms of clean coal yield, recovery of combustibles, separation efficiency （Esp） and useful heat value of clean coal. The combustibles of clean coal obtained through a single stage operation at 35% and 38.7% ash were 40% and 63% respectively. However, the two stage processing was more effective in reducing the ash content in the clean coal. The rougher concentrate generated at higher ash level was subsequently processed in different conditions at 35% ash level, and 58g combustibles could be recovered. Hence, two stage processing increases the combustibles by 18 units and the useful heat value of clean coal increases from 1190 kcal/kg to 3750 kcal/kg.

BACKGROUND： In addition to neuroprotective genes, the targeted genes of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α （HIF-1α） include pro-apoptotic genes. However, the influence of HIF-1α on neuronal apoptosis in hypoxia-ischemia remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the relationship between HIF-1α expression and neuronal apoptosis in hypoxia or hypoxia-ischemia brain injury and to determine the role of HIF-1α in regulating neuronal apoptosis. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled animal experiment was performed at the Laboratory of Children Neurology of Sichuan University between May 2006 and May 2007. MATERIALS： In situ cell death detected kit was provided by Roche, USA; rabbit anti-mouse HIF-1α polyclonal antibody was purchased from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies, USA; rabbit anti-mouse cleaved caspase-3 polyclonal antibody was purchased from Chemicon, USA. METHODS： A total of 36 Sprague Dawley rats aged 10 days were randomly assigned to 3 groups： sham-surgery, hypoxia, and hypoxia-ischemia, with 12 rats per group. The rats were treated at 3 time points： 4, 8, and 24 hours, with 4 rats per time point. In the hypoxia-ischemia group, the right common carotid artery was exposed and permanently ligated through a midline cervical incision. A 2.5-hour exposure to hypoxia （8% O2/92% N2） was used to induce hypoxia-ischemia injury. In the hypoxia group, rats were exposed to hypoxia without ligation of the common carotid artery. In the sham-surgery group, the common carotid artery was exposed without ligation or hypoxia. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Histopathological changes, HIF-1α and activated caspase-3 protein expression, integrated optical density of positive cells, and apoptosis-positive cells. RESULTS： Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed that neuronal degeneration and edema was most prominent at 24 hours after hypoxia-ischemia. HIF-1α protein expression was significantly upregulated at 4 hours, peaked at 8 hours, and decreased at 24 hours after hypoxia or hypoxia
