Identifying temperature-sensitive diseases,vulnerable populations and attributable disease burden is crucial for the development and implementation of tailored climate change adaptation strategies in the context of climate change,especially through both mortality and morbidity analysis by using the data from same regions and populations.We re-analyzed and outlined the whole picture of the impacts of extreme temperatures on both mortality and morbidity among various populations and regions,based on the researches from a well-planned national project of Scientific Survey of Regional Meteorological Sensitive Diseases(SRMSD)with consistent methodology in China.The twenty-four representative regions of the SRMSD project cover all eleven geographical meteorological divisions in the country,including urban and rural areas.In addition to circulatory and respiratory diseases,we found that neurological diseases,injuries,digestive diseases,endocrine diseases,genitourinary diseases,skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases were sensitive to extreme heat,while digestive diseases were sensitive to extreme cold.The extreme temperature-sensitive diseases and the attributable disease burden varied by region.Females and the elderly people(65 years old and above)were more vulnerable to extreme heat when using mortality as a health outcome,whereas males and the young and middle-aged adults were more vulnerable to morbidity risk from heat.Our findings provide important scientific evidence for regional distribution of temperature-sensitive diseases and identification of vulnerable populations in China.It provides evidence and implications of developing regional heat/cold-exposure intervention policies,especially for hospital emergency departments and ambulance services during hot seasons.

Report on Childhood Obesity in China(8):Effects and Sustainability of Physical Activity Intervention on Body Composition of Chinese Youth

Objectives To determine whether a large-scale physical activity intervention could affect body composition in primary school students in Beijing, China. Methods The study design was one-year cluster randomized controlled trial of physical activity intervention （20 rain of daily exercise in the classroom） with an additional year of follow-up among 4 700 students aged 8-11 years at baseline. Results After the one-year intervention, BMI increased by 0.56 kg/m2 （SD 1.15） in the intervention group and by 0.72 kg/m^2 （SD 1.20） in the control group, with a mean difference of-0.15 kg/m^2 （95% CI： -0.28 to -0.02）. BMI z score decreased by -0.05 （SD 0.44） in the intervention group, but increased by 0.01 （SD 0.46） in the control group, with a mean difference of-0.07 （-0.13 to -0.01）. After another year of follow up, compared to the control group, children in the intervention group had significantly lower BMI （-0.13, -0.25 to -0.01 ）, BMI z score （-0.05, -0.10 to -0.01）, fat mass （-0.27 kg, -0.53 to -0.02） and percent body fat （-0.53, -1.00 to -0.05）. The intervention had a more pronounced effect on weight, height, BMI, BMI z score, and body composition among obese children than among normal weight or overweight children. Compared to the control group, the intervention group had a significantly higher percentage of children who maintained or reduced their BMI z score at year 1 （P-0.008） and year 2 （P=-0.04）. Conclusions These findings suggest that 20 min of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity during the school year is a feasible and effective way to prevent excessive gain of body weight, BMI, and body fatness in primary school students.

nutrition literacy is an emerging term defined as "the degree to which people have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic nutrition information". Children with high levels of nutrition literacy could develop healthy dietary habits and food purchasing behaviour, whereas low nutrition literacy has been shown to be associated with unhealthy diets. Although nutrition literacy has emerged as an area of increasing research focus in many countries, only a limited number of tools for assessing children and adolescents are available. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale to assess the nutrition literacy of middle school students in China and provide a scientific basis for the assessment of the nutrition literacy level of these students. Methods The study consisted of three consecutive phases. In the first phase, the Chongqing Middle school student nutrition Literacy Scale(CM-NLS) test pool items were developed. In the second phase, 18 experts working in child nutrition were invited for a two-round e-Delphi to complete the construction of the framework and initial items. In the third phase, 462 participants were tested, the items were revised and the reliability and validity of CM-NLS were tested. Three experiments were conducted. Firstly, a theoretical framework and an initial item pool of CM-NLS were established based on the literature review. Secondly, the two-round Delphi method was used to explore the suitable acceptance indicators and items. A total of 18 experts(mean age = 41.67 years, mean age of nutrition work = 12.28 years) in the field of children s nutrition education were invited to evaluate the concepts of nutrition literacy by E-mail, all levels of indicators and the items used in the tool. They were asked to comment on the importance, feasibility of each indicator using a 5-Likert scale, comment on the importance and sensitivity of each item using a 10-Likert scale, respectively. The association between folic acid supplementation,maternal folate during pregnancy and intelligence development in infants:a prospective cohort study

Objective The study aimed to explore the association between folic acid supplementation,maternal nutritional levels during pregnancy and intelligence development of infants.Method This was a prospective cohort study,mothers and their offspring in Jurong Maternal and Child health Hospital were followed up through pregnancy up to 1 year.The basic information of pregnant women was obtained through questionnaire survey,including pregnancy lifestyle,marital status,vitamin and mineral supplements during pregnancy.Blood samples of pregnant women were collected on admission,serum folate,vitamin B12 and homocysteine concentrations were determined.Maternal postpartum colostrum was collected and the concentrations of folate and vitamin B12 in colostrum were determined.Pregnant women(n=478)and their corresponding infants were followed up and the Developmental Screen Test scores were recorded at 1,3,6,8 and 12 months of age.Results Compared with the normal group,infants in the low serum folate group had a score of 0.12 points lower in the intellectual energy zone(95%CI:-0.23–-0.01,P=0.04),and infants with the high homocysteine level scored 1.30 points lower than the lower-level group(95%CI:-2.52–-0.08,P=0.04).In the colostrum low-vitamin B12 level group,infants scored 0.10 points lower(95%CI:-1.84–-0.02,P=0.02)in the social adaptation zone compared to the normal group.Conclusion In conclusion,folic acid supplementation in the pre-pregnancy supplementation group and the post-pregnancy supplementation group may be not associated with infant mental development.In addition,maternal folate and homocysteine may be related to the intellectual development of infants.The level of vitamin B_(12)in colostrum may be associated with infants’social adaptive capacity.This result may be caused by individual differences in folate and homocysteine metabolism in pregnant women.

Studies investigating correlates of physical activity(PA)using objective PA measurements among primary schoolaged children are limited in Asia,particularly Vietnam.This study examined psychosocial and environmental factors associated with PA among fifth-grade students in eight primary schools in Ho Chi Minh city,Vietnam.Bivariate analyses showed that for every month increase in students’age,an increase of 66 steps/day(psocial influences,intention to be physically active,and parental support for PA,an increase of 220,200,522,and 117 steps/day(psocial influences.In conclusion,intention to be physically active and parental support are important factors and should be considered when designing PA interventions in school/community-based settings.

Adolescence is a critical period development of higher-order cognition and the corresponding refinements of the structure and function of the brain regions supporting it. The development of higher-order cognition is determined by neurobiological and genetic mechanisms as well as household, community, and environmental factors. Lifestyle, as an important factor of the family environment, plays a critical role in affecting offspring s cognition and behaviors. However, previous studies on parental lifestyle and offspring cognitive performance have mainly focused on individual lifestyle factors or lifestyle profiles of one of the parents, and were limited to the observation in offspring’s early childhood. Little is known about the potential role of parental adherence to an overall healthy lifestyle in the cognitive performance of offspring during adolescence and early adulthood. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the prospective association between overall parental lifestyle and cognitive performance in offspring during adolescence and young adulthood, using a nationally representative sample from China. Methods We included 2531 adolescents aged 10-15 years at the study baseline in 2010 from the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS). Five healthy lifestyle factors were defined as(1) modified dietary diversity score greater than or equal to 5 points(about the top 35%),(2) never smoking,(3) non-habitual drinking(no more than three times per week in the last month),(4) exercise weekly,(5) taking a short afternoon nap(healthy lifestyle behaviors. The combination of these five lifestyle factors constructed the healthy lifestyle score ranging from 0 to 5, with a higher score indicating a healthier lifestyle. Anemia,a global public health problem,has significant adverse consequences on the cognitive development of children and the work capacity of adults;affecting social and economic development.Globally,roughly 43%of children under five years of age,38%of pregnant women,and 29%of nonpregnant women had anemia.Anemia during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of low birth weight and preterm birth.A 10 g/L increase in hemoglobin has been estimated to decrease the risk of maternal and perinatal mortality by 29%and 28%.

nutritional Status of Under-five Children from Urban Low-income Families in Xiangtan and Jilin in China

There have been many studies on the nutrition and the growth status of children from rural and remote western regions of China, whereas researches on children from urban low-income families are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the growth and nutritional status of children under five years of age from urban low-income families in China. There were 169 children aged 25–60 months recruited from Xiangtan and Jilin, two cities with a population of 2.81 million and 4.26 million respectively, in China in this cluster cross-sectional study. Data were collected on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, the feeding practices and the incidence of anemia and diarrhea. The results showed that the prevalence of low birth weight and macrosomia was 7.1% and 9.5% for the two cities, respectively, which was higher than that for other cities in China（1.5% and 5.9%）. Of all the sampled children, 14.6% and 8.2% suffered anemia and diarrhea, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that legumes or nuts fed in a 24-h recall increased the risk of anemia（OR=4.9）. Children whose caregivers began to introduce complementary foods relatively late would have high diarrhea prevalence（OR=1.4）. In conclusion, the prevalence of anemia and diarrhea in under-five children from urban low-income families in China is relatively high. The growth and nutritional status of these children is greatly affected by feeding practices. A series of measures should be taken by relevant government departments to improve the health of these children.
