Development of a field enhanced photocatalytic device for biocide of coliform bacteria

A field enhanced flow reactor using bias assisted photocatalysis was developed for bacterial disinfection in lab-synthesized and natural waters. The reactor provided complete inactivation of contaminated waters with flow rates of 50 mL/min. The device consisted of titanium dioxide nanotube arrays, with an externally applied bias of up to 6 V. Light intensity, applied voltage, background electrolytes and bacteria concentration were all found to impact the device performance. Complete inactivation of Escherichia coli W3110（- 8 × 10^3CFU/mL） occurred in 15 sec in the reactor irradiated at 25 mW/cm^2 with an applied voltage of 4 V in a 100 ppm NaCl solution. Real world testing was conducted using source water from Emigration Creek in Salt Lake City, Utah. Disinfection of natural creek water proved more challenging, providing complete bacterial inactivation after 25 sec at 6 V. A reduction in bactericidal efficacy was attributed to the presence of inorganic and organic species, as well as the increase in robustness of natural bacteria.

Spinal cord injury （SCI） results in permanent loss of function leading to often devastating personal, economic and social problems. A contributing factor to the permanence of SCI is that damaged axons do not regenerate, which prevents the re-establishment of axonal circuits involved in function. Many groups are working to develop treatments that address the lack of axon regeneration after SCI. The emergence of biomaterials for regeneration and increased collaboration between engineers, basic and translational scientists, and clinicians hold promise for the development of effective therapies for SCI. A plethora of biomaterials is available and has been tested in various models of SCI. Considering the clinical relevance of contusion injuries, we primarily focus on polymers that meet the specific criteria for addressing this type of injury. Biomaterials may provide structural support and/or serve as a delivery vehicle for factors to arrest growth inhibition and promote axonal growth. Designing materials to address the specific needs of the damaged central nervous system is crucial and possible with current technology. Here, we review the most prominent materials, their optimal characteristics, and their potential roles in repairing and regenerating damaged axons following SCI.

Beneficial effects of hirudotherapy in a chronic case of complex regional pain syndrome

We report about hirudotherapy in a patient with chronic complex regional pain syndrome(CRPS) in the right hand. CRPS is a multifactorial disease associated with disabling pain as well as sensory and motor deficits. The optimal therapeutic management is based on personalized multimodal treatment approaches;however, hirudotherapy has not been described in the available literature. To date, we have completed five medicinal leech treatments. Altogether, hirudotherapy led to rapid and substantial relief of symptoms, especially with respect to pain intensity ratings and skin temperature asymmetries. In addition, the patient’s active and passive agility of the affected limb improved obviously.

Shenmai Injection Attenuates Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Targeting Nrf2/GPX4 Signalling-Mediated Ferroptosis

Objective:To examine the effect of Shenmai Injection(SMJ)on ferroptosis during myocardial ischemia reperfusion(I/R)injury in rats and the underlying ***:A total of 120SPF-grade adult male SD rats,weighing 220–250 g were randomly divided into different groups according to a random number *** I/R model was established by occluding the left anterior descending artery for 30 min followed by 120 min of *** was injected intraperitoneally at the onset of 120 min of reperfusion,and erastin(an agonist of ferroptosis),ferrostatin-1(Fer-1,an inhibitor of ferroptosis)and ML385(an inhibitor of nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2(Nrf2))were administered intraperitoneally separately 30 min before myocardial ischemia as different *** function before ischemia,after ischemia and after reperfusion was *** changes in the myocardium and the ultrastructure of cardiomyocytes were observed,and the myocardial infarction area was ***,the concentration of Fein heart tissues and the levels of creatine kinase-MB(CK-MB),troponin I(cTnI),malondialdehyde(MDA)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)in serum were measured using assay kits,and the expressions of Nrf2,glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4)and acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4(ACSL4)were examined by Western ***:Compared with the sham group,I/R significantly injured heart tissues,as evidenced by the disordered,ruptured and oedematous myocardial fibres;the increases in infarct size,serum CK-MB,cTnI and MDA levels,and myocardial Feconcentrations;and the decreases in SOD activity(P<0.05).These results were accompanied by ultrastructural alterations to the mitochondria,increased expression of ACSL4 and inhibited the activation of Nrf2/GPX4 signalling(P<0.05).Compared with the I/R group,pretreatment with 9 mL/kg SMJ and 2 mg/kg Fer-1 significantly reduced myocardial I/R injury,Feconcentrations and ACSL4 expression and attenuated mitochondr

Molecular physiology of vesicular glutamate transporters in the digestive system

Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Packaging and storage of glutamate into glutamatergic neuronal vesicles require ATP-dependent vesicular glutamate uptake systems, which utilize the electrochemical proton gradient as a driving force. Three vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUT1-3) have been recently identified from neuronal tissue where they play a key role to maintain the vesicular glutamate level. Recently, it has been demonstrated that glutamate signaling is also functional in peripheral neuronal and non-neuronal tissues, and occurs in sites of pituitary, adrenal, pineal glands, bone, GI tract, pancreas,skin, and testis. The glutamate receptors and VGLUTs in digestivesystem have been found in both neuronal and endocrinal cells. The glutamate signaling in the digestive system may have significant relevance to diabetes and GI tract motility disorders. This review will focus on the most recent update of molecular physiology of digestive VGLUTs.

Intracranial pressure monitoring:Gold standard and recent innovations

Intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP) is based on the doctrine proposed by Monroe and Kellie centuries ago. With the advancement of technology and science, various invasive and non-invasive modalities of monitoring ICP continue to be developed. An ideal monitor to track ICP should be easy to use, accurate, reliable, reproducible, inexpensive and should not be associated with infection or haemorrhagic complications. Although the transducers connected to the extra ventricular drainage continue to be Gold Standard, its association with the likelihood of infection and haemorrhage have led to the search for alternate noninvasive methods of monitoring ICP. While Camino transducers, Strain gauge micro transducer based ICP monitoring devices and the Spiegelberg ICP monitor are the emerging technology in invasive ICP monitoring, optic nerve sheath diameter measurement, venous opthalmodynamometry, tympanic membrane displacement, tissue resonance analysis, tonometry, acoustoelasticity, distortionproduct oto-acoustic emissions, trans cranial doppler, electro encephalogram, near infra-red spectroscopy, pupillometry, anterior fontanelle pressure monitoring, skull elasticity, jugular bulb monitoring, visual evoked response and radiological based assessment of ICP are the non-invasive methods which are assessed against the gold standard.
