We report the preparation of Cu_(2)Si_(x)Sn_(1−x)S_(3) thin films for thin film solar cell absorbers using the reactive magnetron co−sputtering *** dispersive spectrometer and x-ray diffraction analyses indicate that Cu_(2)Si_(x)Sn_(1−x)S_(3) thin films can be synthesized successfully by partly substituting Si atoms for Sn atoms in the Cu_(2)SnS_(3) lattice,leading to a shrinkage of the lattice,and,accordingly,by 2θshifting to larger *** blue shift of the Raman peak further confirms the formation of Cu_(2)Si_(x)Sn_(1−x)S_(3).Environmental scanning electron microscope analyses reveal a polycrystalline and homogeneous morphology with a grain size of about 200–300 *** measurements indicate an optical absorption coefficient of higher than 104 cm^(−1) and an optical bandgap of 1.17±0.01 eV.

To analyze the importance of para-aortic node status in a series of patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in a single Institution. METHODSBetween January 2000 and December 2012, 151 patients underwent PD with para-aortic node dissection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma in our Institution. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with negative PALNs (PALNs-), and patients with metastatic PALNs (PALNs+). Pathologic factors, including stage, nodal status, number of positive nodes and lymph node ratio, invasion of para-aortic nodes, tumor’s grading, and radicality of resection were studied by univariate and multivariate analysis. Survival curves were constructed with Kaplan-Meier method and compared with Log-rank test: significance was considered as P 107 patients (74%) had nodal metastases. Median number of pathologically assessed lymph nodes was 26 (range 14-63). Twenty-five patients (16.5%) had para-aortic lymph node involvement. Thirty-three patients (23%) underwent R1 pancreatic resection. One-hundred forty-one patients recurred and died for tumor recurrence, one is alive with recurrence, and 9 are alive and free of disease. Overall survival was significantly influenced by grading (P = 0.0001), radicality of resection (P = 0.001), stage (P = 0.03), lymph node status (P = 0.04), para-aortic nodes metastases (P = 0.02). Multivariate analysis showed that grading was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (P = 0.0001), while grading (P = 0.0001) and radicality of resection (P = 0.01) were prognostic parameters for disease-free survival. Number of metastatic nodes, node ratio, and para-aortic nodes involvement were not independent predictors of disease-free and overall survival. CONCLUSIONIn this experience, lymph node status and para-aortic node metastases were associated with poor survival at univariate analysis, but they were not independent prognostic factors.

·AIM:To evalaute the effect of fixed-combination latanoprost 0.005%/timolol maleate 0.5% and dorzolamide hydrochloride 2%/timolol maleate 0.5% on postoperative intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification cataract surgery.·METHODS:This study is a prospective,randomized,double-masked and *** study included 90 eyes of 90 patients which were scheduled to have phacoemulsification *** were randomly assigned preoperatively to 1 of 3 groups (30 eyes of 30 patients).Two hour before surgery,the patients received one drop latanoprost/timolol (group 1),dorzolamide/timolol (group 2) and placebo (group 3,control group).The IOPs were measured at preoperative and postoperative 4,8,and 24 hours.·RESULTS:The preoperative mean intraocular pressure was not statistically significant between both drug groups and control *** group 1 and 2,the postoperative mean IOP [group1:(14.03?à3.15)mmHg and group 2:(14.16?à4.43)mmHg] at 24 hours were significantly lower than the control group [(16.93?à3.70)mmHg,(P 1 [(14.90±3.69)mmHg] at 8 hours was significantly lower than the control group [(17.70?à3.89)mmHg,(P 16.16?à5.23)mmHg] and control group at 8 hours (P >0.05).·CONCLUSION:When compared with placebo,the use of preoperative fixed combination of latanoprost/timolol and dorzolamide/timolol is an effective method for preventing intraocular pressure elevation in 24 hours after phacoemulsification surgery,but did not completely prevent IOP spikes.·

Counteraction of perforated cecum lesions in rats: Effects of pentadecapeptide BPC 157,L-NAME and L-arginine

AIM To study the counteraction of perforated cecum lesion using BPC 157 and nitric oxide(NO) system *** Alongside with the agents' application(after 1 min, medication(/kg, 10 ml/2 min bath/rat) includes: BPC 157(10 μg), L-NAME(5 mg), L-arginine(100mg) alone or combined, and saline baths(controls)) on the rat perforate cecum injury, we continuously assessed the gross reappearance of the vessels(USB microcamera) quickly propagating toward the defect at the cecum surface, defect contraction, bleeding attenuation, MDA-and NO-levels in cecum tissue at 15 min, and severity of cecum lesions and adhesions at 1 and 7 d. RESULTS Post-injury, during/after a saline bath, the number of vessels was significantly reduced, the defect was slightly narrowed, bleeding was significant and MDA-levels increased and NO-levels decreased. BPC 157 bath: the vessel presentation was markedly increased, the defect was noticeably narrowed, the bleeding time was shortened and MDA-and NO-levels remained normal. L-NAME: reduced vessel presentation but not more than the control, did not change defect and shortened bleeding. L-arginine: exhibited less vessel reduction, did not change the defect and prolonged bleeding. In combination, mutual counteraction occurred(L-NAME + L-arginine) or the presentation was similar to that of BPC 157 rats(BPC 157 + L-NAME; BPC 157 + L-arginine; BPC 157 + L-NAME + L-arginine), except the defect did not change. Thereby at day 1 and 7, saline, L-NAME, L-arginine and L-NAME + L-arginine failed(defect was still open and large adhesions present). CONCLUSION The therapeutic effect was achieved with BPC 157 alone or in combination with L-NAME and L-arginine as it was able to consolidate the stimulating and inhibiting effects of the NO-system towards more effective healing recruiting vessels.

AIM:To investigate alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and sustained virological response(SVR)in chronic hepatitis C(CHC)during peginterferon-ribavirin ***:One hundred and fifty-one genotype 1CHC patients underwent treatment for 48 wk with peginterferon and ribavirin,and were retrospectively divided into two groups as having a rapid virological response(RVR)(Group 1,n=52)and not having an RVR(Group 2,n=99).We also subdivided each group into two according to the initial ALT level being high(Group1h and Group 2h)or normal(Group 1n and Group 2n).HCV RNA and ALT levels were measured at baseline;at 4,12,24 and 48 wk during the treatment period;and at 24 wk *** levels were also obtained at 8 *** to the results of ALT,patients were enrolled in either the follow-up abnormal or follow-up normalized ALT groups at each *** with high and normal ALT levels were compared for each interval in terms of ***:The SVR rates were 83%vs 40%(P=0.000),82%vs 84%(P=0.830),and 37%vs 44%(P=0.466)when comparing Group 1 with 2,1h with1n,and 2h with 2n,*** Group 2h,the SVR rates were 34%vs 40%(P=0.701),11%vs 52%(P=0.004),12%vs 50%(P=0.007),7%vs 50%(P=0.003),6%vs 53%(P=0.001),and 0%vs 64%(P=0.000)when comparing patients with high and normalized ALT levels at week 4,8,12,24,48 and 72,*** multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that RVR(OR=7.05;95%CI:3.1-16.05,P=0.000),complete early virological response(cEVR)(OR=17.55;95%CI:6.32-48.76,P=0.000),normalization of ALT at8 wk(OR=3.04;95%CI:1.31-7.06,P=0.008),and at 12 wk(OR=4.21;95%CI:1.65-10.76,P=0.002)were identified as independent significant predictive factors for ***:Normalization of ALT at 8 wk may predict viral response during peginterferon-ribavirin treatment in genotype-1 CHC patients especially without RVR.

We report the thermotolerance of new bivoltine silkworm, Bombyx mori strains NB4D2, KSO1, NP2, CSR2 and CSR4 and differential expression of heat shock proteins at different instars. Different instars of silkworm larva were subjected to heat shock at 35℃, 40℃ and 45℃ for 2 hours followed by 2 hours recovery. Heat shock proteins were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. The impact of heat shock on commercial traits of cocoons was analyzed by following different strategies in terms of acquired thermotolerance over control. Comparatively NP2 exhibited better survivability than other strains. Resistance to heat shock was increased as larval development proceeds in the order of first instar 〉 second instar 〉 third instar 〉 fourth instar 〉 fifth instar in all silkworm strains. Expression of heat shock proteins varies in different instars. 90 kDa in the first, second and third instars, 84 kDa in the fourth instar and 84, 62, 60, 47 and 33 kDa heat shock proteins in fifth instar was observed in response to heat shock. Relative influence of heat shock on commercial traits that correspond to different stages was significant in all strains. In NB4D2, cocoon and shell weight significantly increased to 17.52% and 19.44% over control respectively. Heat shock proteins as molecular markers for evaluation and evolution of thermotolerant silkworm strains for tropics was discussed.

High-elevation Adaptation of Motion Visual Display Modifications in the Toad-Headed Agamid Lizards(Phrynocephalus)

Understanding the process of adaptation is a key mission in modern evolutionary *** living at high elevations face challenges in energy meta bolism due to several environmental constraints(e.g., oxygen supply, food availa bility,and movement time). Animal behavioral processes are intimately related to energy meta bolism, and therefore, behavioral modifica tions are expected to be an important mechanism for high-elevation adaptation. We tested this behavioral adaptation hypothesis using va ria tions of motion visual displays in toad-headed agamid lizards of the genus Phr ynocephalus. We predicted tha t complexity of visual motion displays would decrease with the increase of elevation, because motion visual displays are energetically costly. Displays of 12 Phr ynocephalus species were collected with elevations ranging from sea level to 4600 m. We quantified display complexity using the number of display components, display duration, pathways of display components, as well as display speed for each species. Association between display complexity and elevation was analyzed using the phylogenetic generalized least squares(PGLS)model. We found that both the number of display components and the average value of tail coil speed were negatively correlated with elevation, suggesting that toad-headed lizards living at high-elevation areas reduced their display complexity to cope with the environmental constraints. Our research provides direct evidence for high-elevation adaptation from a behavioral aspect and illustrates the potential impacts of environment heterogeneity on motion visual display diversification.

AIM: To examine whether the reversibility of chronic cyclosporine A (CsA) nephrotoxicity is associated with apoptotic cell death and its regulatory factors. METHODS: Chronic CsA nephrotoxicity was induced in Sprague- Dawley rats by administering CsA (15 mg/kg, sc) for 5 weeks, and then withdrawing it for 5 or 10 weeks. The effect of CsA withdrawal on apoptotic cell death was evaluated by an in situ TdT-mediated deoxyuridine triphos- phate-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay and the expression of pro-apoptotic [(transforming growth factor- beta1 (TGF-β1) and Fas] and anti-apoptotic [epidermal growth factors (EGF) and Bcl-2] factors. RESULTS: Discontinuation of CsA induced significant decreases in TUNEL-positive cells in a time-dependent manner and the reduction in TUNEL-positive cells was correlated with the tubulointerstitial fibrosis score (r=0.919, P1). Upregulation of TGF-β1 and Fas expression in CsA-treated rat kidneys was decreased significantly after with- drawal of CsA. In contrast, downregulated EGF and Bcl-2 expression returned to normal or supernormal levels. CONCLUSION: CsA withdrawal is associated with a decrease in apoptotic cell death and with changes in the expression of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic molecules involved in renal wound repair. This may constitute one of the mechanisms underlying the reversibility of chronic CsA nephrotoxicity.
