Finnish men have had a reputation for good semen quality. This was based on semen studies comparing Finnish men with other Europeans. However, those studies also showed that sperm concentrations of young men from the general population were only two-thirds of those of fertile men. Longitudinal follow-up of semen quality in young Finnish men showed a sig- nificant decline during 1998-2006, suggesting that Finland is following the global trend of impaired male reproductive health.

Calcium release from intracellular stores plays an important role in the regulationof muscle contraction and electrical signals that determine the heart *** receptor （RyR） is the major calcium (Ca2+) release channel required forexcitation-contraction coupling in the *** studies have demonstratedthat RyR are macromolecular complexes comprising of 4 pore-forming channelsubunits,each of which is associated with regulatory *** andexperimental studies over the past 5 years have provided compelling evidencethat intracellular Ca2+release channels play a pivotal role in the development ofcardiac arrhythmias and heart *** in the channel regulation andsubunit composition are believed to cause diastolic calcium leakage from thesarcoplasmic reticulum,which could trigger arrhythmias and weaken ***,cardiac RyR have emerged as potential therapeutic tar-gets for the treatment of heart ***,there is a strong desire toidentify and/or develop novel pharmacological agents that may target these Ca2+signaling *** agents known to modulate RyR in the heart,and their potential application towards the treatment of heart disease are dis-cussed in this review.

Chronic ethanol consumption is associated with changes in the function and structure of the lungs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic ethanol exposure on the lungs and whether ginger extract mitigated pulmonary abnormalities induced by ethanol in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into the control group, the ethanol group, and the ethanol plus ginger extract group. Six weeks of ethanol treatment increased the proliferation of lung cells, and induced fibrosis, inflammation and leukocyte infiltration. A significant rise in the level of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, NADPH oxidase, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein was also observed. Ginger extract significantly ameliorated the above changes. These findings indicate that ethanol induces abnormalities in the lungs by oxidative DNA damage and oxidative stress, and that these effects can be alleviated by ginger, which may function as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

Objective:Preterm birth(PTB)at or before 32 weeks complicates up to 2%of United States(US)births and accounts for 80%of perinatal expenditures in the first year of *** screening tests for PTB performed from 12 weeks to 19 weeks 5 days have receiver operated area under the curve(AUC)indices of2 weeks due to spontaneous labor(sPTB)with or without preterm premature rupture of the membranes(PPROM)or early-onset pre-eclampsia before 34 weeks(EOP).FutureBIRTH™is supported by multiple validation studies derived from 12 weeks to 19 weeks 5 days gestation achieving AUCs of 84.2%for sPTB and 94.1%for ***:Using the US rates for EOP(0.5%)and sPTB≦32 weeks(1.8%)and adjusting the US pregnancy/neonatal medical costs to US dollars(2017 value),we calculated the cost per 100,000 singletons with or without universal FutureBIRTH™testing before 19 weeks and 6 days using three detection rates and assuming screenpositive women would be treated with and respond to aspirin(assumed 80%efficacy for EOP)and vaginal progesterone(assumed 38%efficacy for sPTB).We also assessed test performance at disease incidence rates below that of the US(down to 0.46%).For considering screening costs,we assumed test costs of$750,and treatment costs of$1000 for patients over 20 weeks gestational ***:The identification and treatment of‘at-risk’pregnancies by FutureBIRTH™with existing therapies would reduce direct healthcare costs by up to$95 million per 100,000 *** projected savings were robust and achievable at each FutureBIRTH™price despite the conservative costs,efficacy,and detection rate *** incidence of PTB≦32 weeks would decline by 40%–50%with a test cost of$750 and an 80%detection ***:The accurate risk assessment provided by universal FutureBIRTH™screening coupled with existing preventative treatments could lea

Objective： This study investigated the effects of aqueous leaf extract of Tridax procumbens （ALETP） on con- tractile activity of corpus cavernosum in N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester （L-NAME）-induced hypertensive male rats. Methods： Twenty normal, adult male rats （130-150 g） were divided into four groups of five rats each. Group I （control） was given normal saline （0.6 mL/kg） and group II was given L-NAME （40 mg/kg） for 6 weeks. Groups Ill and IV also received L-NAME （40 mg/kg） for 6 weeks but were further co-treated with 100 and 200 mg/kg of ALETP, respectively, from week 4 to week 6. All treatments were given orally. Strips of corpus cavernosum from each of the four groups were exposed to increasing concentrations of acetyl~ choline （ACh） and sodium nitroprusside （SNP）（10^-9-10^-5 tool/L） after contraction with phenylephrine （10^-7 mol/L） to test for a dose-response effect, Response to potassium and calcium was also measured after cumulatively adding potassium and calcium （10-50 mmol/L） to potassium- and calcium-free organ chamber. Isometric contractions were recorded through an Ugo Basile data capsule acquisition system. Results： Mean arterial blood pressure was significantly reduced in the ALETP co-treated group compared to the control and L-NAME-only groups （P 〈 0.05）. Cavernosa strips from ALETP co-treated rats exhibited significant inhibition of contraction in response to phenylephrine, potassium chloride, and calcium chlo- ride （P 〈 0.05）. Relaxation in response to Ach and SNP was also significantly impaired in cavernosa strips from the L-NAME-only treated group （P 〈 0.05）, while ALETP co-treated groups showed enhanced per- centage relaxation. Conclusion： ALETP treatment of L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats promotes a relaxant effect on isolated cavernosa strips. ALETP shows potential in correcting erectile dysfunction in hypertension.

Effects of phytoestrogen genistein on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury and apoptosis in rabbits

AIM: To study the effect of genistein (GST) on rabbit heart ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS: Rabbit heart I/R injury was induced by occluding the left anterior descending coronary artery for 45 min and reperfusing for 180 min. GST (1.0 mg/kg) was intravenously injected 5 min before heart ischemia. Hemodynamic data, infarct size, and cardiomyocytic apoptosis were measured. The pathologic changes of I/R myocardium were observed. RESULTS: During the I/R, heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, myocardial oxygen consumption, left ventricu- lar (LV) –dp/dtmax and +dp/dtmax were decreased progressively. The infarct size was occupied 60.23 %±3.97 % (% of area at risk) in vehicle +I/R group while GST reduced the infarct size to 39.62 %±4.30 % (P1). DNA ladder patter in myocardium was revealed by agarose gel electrophoresis in vehicle +I/R group while was not found in GST+I/R group. Apoptotic cardiomyocytes were sparse within ischemic myocardium at risk in GST+I/R group as compared with that in vehicle +I/R group (TUNEL stain). Apoptosis rate in ischemic myocardium from vehicle +I/R and GST+I/R groups detected by flow cytometry were 15.33 %±1.31 % and 3.88 %±0.33 %, respectively. Fas and Bax protein expressions in ischemic myocardium of vehicle +I/R group were higher than that in GST+I/R group (P1). Bcl-2/Bax ratio in vehicle +I/R group was lower than that in nonischemic myocar- dium (P1), while in GST+I/R group, the Bcl-2/Bax ratio was higher than that in vehicle +I/R group (P1). CONCLUSION: GST reduced infarct size and apoptosis of myocytes in I/R rabbit heart.

75 cases of old myocardial, infarction were followed up at the coronary heart clinic. 21 showed regional cardiac bulge on X-rays and diagnosed ventricular aneurysm, an incidence of 28.0%. The clinical diagnostic criteria of ventricular aneurysm included systolic heave of the apical impulse, sustained ST elevation in certain ECG leads, regional cardiac bulge on cardiac X-rays and regional paradoxic impulse of left ventricular electrokymography. 17 of 21 ventricular aneurysms were at the apex and anterior wall. The X-ray locations of ventricular aneurysm coincided with the sites of ECG myocardial infarction. 9 cases were accompanied by papillary muscle insufficiency and 1 by ventricular septal perforation.
