The Effect of Massage with Oils on the Growth of Term Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background and Aims: Infant massage could potentially benefit both physiological and psychological health. This study aims to determine the effect of massage with oils on the growth of full-term infants, which is given by their mothers. Study Design: This is a double-blind randomized controlled trial which was conducted on full term infants visited in the nine Public Health Centers of Shahrekord, Iran in 2010. Material and Methods: This study included 217 infants. Inclusion criteria for the infants were age scale between 10 to 15 days, full term gestation, birth weight of 2500 grams at least, Apgar score of 7 or above, no resuscitation after the birth, exclusive breastfeeding during the study, medically stable condition without any need for drugs, nulliparous. The infants were randomized into four groups: massage with sunflower oil, massage with sesame oil, massage without oil, and no massage (control group). Massage was given by mothers twice a day for 4 weeks, starting from the 10 - 15th day of life. Weight and height were measured weekly. At last, Repeated Measures Analysis of Covariance was employed to analyze the data. Birth weight (height) as well as mean frequency of breastfeeding during the study was deemed as covariates. Results: The findings showed that the mean of weight and height was significantly different between groups over time, respectively (P = 0.005, P < 0.001). The infants’ mean weight in sunflower oil massage group increased significantly compared with other three groups (P = 0.005). In addition, infants’ height gain in sunflower and sesame oil massage group were significantly higher than message-only and control groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Massage with oil, especially sunflower oil is an inexpensive, simple, and effective intervention which improved weight and height gain in selected samples. Further studies are needed to evaluate the serious adverse effects, if any, to notify midwives and health care staff.

Introduction: Tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke are one of the most preventable causes of death and disability worldwide. The risk is even higher among daily tobacco consumers. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that surveillance of major risk factors for non- communicable diseases (NCDs), such as smoking, be imperative to predicting the future burden of NCDs, identifying adequate interventions to decrease future burden and monitor trends. In 2015, a survey on NCD risk factors was conducted in Benin to estimate the prevalence of major NCD risk factors. We analyzed the data from this survey to estimate the prevalence and risk factors associated with daily tobacco consumption in Benin. Methods: A nationwide representative sample of the population was constituted in the 12 departments of Benin. The WHO STEPS wise tool was used to collect data on behavioral and demographic characteristics, including daily tobacco consumption. Tobacco consumption was subdivided into three categories: The daily consumption of tobacco, the daily consumption of smoked tobacco and non-smoked tobacco. Multivariate analysis through the weighted logistic regression was used to identify potential factors associated with daily consumption of tobacco. Results: Over the 5.126 surveyed subjects, 7.49% were daily tobacco consumers, with 3.85% being daily users of smoked tobacco and 4.36% being daily consumers of non-smoked tobacco. Men were more likely to be daily consumers of tobacco compared to women (OR = 7.42;95%CI = [4.98;11.06]). Compared to respondents aged 18 to 24, those aged 45 to 54 were five times more likely to consume tobacco (OR = 5.58;95%IC = [2.71;11.47]). Respondents residing in the departments of Atacora, Couffo and Borgou were respectively 4.28 times, 3.93 times and 2.63 times more likely to consume tobacco compared to those residing in the department of Alibori. 恰如其分的外周髓鞘形成取决于雪旺细胞增殖与分化进程间的平衡。丝氨酸/苏氨酸激酶(mTOR)整合多种环境因素,是细胞生长、代谢、发挥作用的中枢调节者。本文报道了一种mTOR的负性调节剂——结节性硬化复合体(TSC1),通过控制细胞增殖和髓鞘稳态,建立了雪旺细胞谱系进展和髓鞘形成的阶段依赖性程序。小鼠雪旺细胞祖细胞中TSC1的解离导致mTOR信号通路激活,继而导致雪旺细胞过量增殖,分化受阻,髓鞘形成减少。转录组分析显示,TSC1突变体中的mTOR活化使得polo样激酶(PLK)依赖性通路和细胞周期调节剂上调。弱化mTOR或者对PLK进行药理抑制部分挽救了因TSC1缺失导致的外周神经发育过程中的髓鞘形成减少。相较之下,成年小鼠成熟雪旺细胞中TSC1缺失可导致髓鞘的过度增殖和过度生长。本文的发现提示了TSC1-mTOR-PLK信号轴在控制雪旺细胞的发育过程中,从增殖到分化和髓鞘内稳态中起到的阶段特异性功能。

Is There a Correlation between Body Weight and Awareness of Healthy Life Style Components in Children?

Background: Incidence of obesity in children is increasing worldwide. Healthy eating and exercise are the major components of a healthy life style in the community. Objective: we aim to assess the knowledge of healthy eating and exercise in children?of varying weight?and to explore the correlation between knowledge and bodyweight. Method: School children are invited to fill in a 2 questions quiz about healthy life style.?BMI is calculated and children are classified into obese, overweight, normal and underweight. Answers are scored and results compared for different categories of the BMI. Results: 445 children participated. Age range (mean) was 7 - 13 (10) years. 67 were obese, 59 overweight, 237 normal weight and 34 were underweight. In the food question, 22%, 20%, 23% 15% of obese, overweight, underweight and normal weight children respectively gave wrong answers compared to 17.5%, 15% and 14.7%, 13.3% for the exercise question. Neither of the results was statistically significant. Boys are more knowledgeable about exercise than girls (P = 0.03). Conclusion: There is no difference in the level of knowledge about healthy eating and exercise among children with varying body weights. Tackling children behavior and attitude towards food and exercise is as important as improving their knowledge.

目的比较小鼠高氧肺损伤肺组织与正常肺组织的差异表达基因,从分子水平揭示高氧肺损伤的发病机制.方法利用PubMed数据库获取小鼠高氧肺损伤肺组织与正常肺组织的差异表达基因,并进行生物学通路、基因本体和功能注释聚类等生物信息分析.结果两组间差异表达基因共467条,以2倍标准筛选出189条差异表达基因,再用功能注释工具将超过2倍差异表达的基因对KEGG数据库进行映射,共有54条基因注释到KEGG数据库的小鼠生物学通路中.通过代谢通路的富集度分析,有5条通路显示具有相关性,提示这些途径可能和高氧肺损伤密切相关.5条通路中与高氧肺损伤相关基因20条（上调基因14条,下调基因6条）,它们在造血细胞的增殖、分化、更新,轴突导向,细胞之间的黏着连接,T细胞受体信号转导通路,黏着斑形成方面起着重要作用.结论对挖掘出的20条与高氧肺损伤相关的基因进行深入研究,将为揭示高氧肺损伤的分子机制和靶向治疗提供有效方法.
