Contemporary construction in historical sites:The missing factors

Historical sites(HSs)are akin to living entities,and their existence is perpetuated through the erection of new buildings or additions.Many HSs need sustainable development and new construction,as existing monuments fail to meet contemporary user requirements.Despite the urgent demand,many new buildings within HSs have been constructed without considering the influencing factors on contextual value,built,and natural environment.This oversight has led to irreversible damage to their historical value.Numerous studies have independently explored interventions,construction,and development within HSs.However,there is a conspicuous absence of comprehensive research that concurrently addresses these issues while preserving the intrinsic value of the HSs.This study aims to identify the variables and factors contributing to the successful design and construction of new buildings within HSs,satisfying user needs,conserving contextual values,and achieving sustainability with the natural and built environment.The research employs a mixed-method approach,gathering raw data through literature reviews,case studies,and expert interviews.The study population comprised 97 experts in architectural heritage conservation and sustainable development.Exploratory factor analysis was utilized for data analysis,leading to the identification of influential factors.The study highlights the significance of the location,function,scale,form,material,skyline,viewpoint,accessibility,reversibility,topography,sustainability,technology,structural system,lifespan,and interior design in constructing new buildings within a HS.Moreover,the design of new additions should adhere to five guiding principles:integrated design,volume design,green design,compatible design,and modern design.In this context,the new structures will fulfill user needs,preserve or enhance contextual values,and harmonize with the built and natural environment.

Evaluating different levels of information on the calibration of building energy simulation models

A poorly calibrated model undermines confidence in the effectiveness of building energy simulation, impeding the widespread application of advanced energy conservation measures (ECMs). Striking a balance between information-gathering efforts and achieving sufficient model credibility is crucial but often obscured by ambiguities. To address this gap, we model and calibrate a test bed with different levels of information (LOI). Beginning with an initial model based on building geometry (LOI 1), we progressively introduce additional information, including nameplate information (LOI 2), envelope conductivity (LOI 3), zone infiltration rate (LOI 4), AHU fan power (LOI 5), and HVAC data (LOI 6). The models are evaluated for accuracy, consistency, and the robustness of their predictions. Our results indicate that adding more information for calibration leads to improved data fit. However, this improvement is not uniform across all observed outputs due to identifiability issues. Furthermore, for energy-saving analysis, adding more information can significantly affect the projected energy savings by up to two times. Nevertheless, for ECM ranking, models that did not meet ASHRAE 14 accuracy thresholds can yield correct retrofit decisions. These findings underscore equifinality in modeling complex building systems. Clearly, predictive accuracy is not synonymous with model credibility. Therefore, to balance efforts in information-gathering and model reliability, it is crucial to (1) determine the minimum level of information required for calibration compatible with its intended purpose and (2) calibrate models with information closely linked to all outputs of interest, particularly when simultaneous accuracy for multiple outputs is necessary.

A study on carbon emission calculation in operation stage of residential buildings based on micro electricity usage behavior:Three case studies in China

Along with the improvement of social productivity and living standard,residential buildings generate a growing portion of carbon emissions,especially during the operation stage.However,energy use behaviors are usually ignored in carbon emission calculation.This study focuses on calculating carbon emissions during the operation stage for residential buildings based on the characteristics of energy use behaviors in different regions.Firstly,we investigated energy use behaviors in dwellings across three cities in China:Xi'an,Shanghai and Fuzhou.Then,we established calibrated carbon emission models and optimization models with different green building measures for residential buildings.The results of this research reveal a significant disparity between the energy usage habits of residents in different climate regions.The carbon emissions of residential electricity bills in Xi'an,Shanghai and Fuzhou are 13.6 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a)(excluding central heating),29.3 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a)and 17.2 kgCO_(2)/(m^(2)·a),respectively.Equipment carbon emissions account for 32.2%-64.1% of the total.In comparison to the model based on internal standard setting,the accuracy of the models using actual internal has improved by 25.9%-37.4%.The three-star green building methods have the highest carbon reduction rate among different star buildings,the emission reduction rates are around 30%.This study's findings are useful for carbon emission calculation and green building design of residential buildings in the future.

Energy demand fluctuations due to low probability high impact(LPHI)micro-climatic events such as urban heat island effect(UHI)and heatwaves,pose significant challenges for urban infrastructure,particularly within urban built-clusters.Mapping short term load forecasting(STLF)of buildings in urban micro-climatic setting(UMS)is obscured by the complex interplay of surrounding morphology,micro-climate and inter-building energy dynamics.Conventional urban building energy modelling(UBEM)approaches to provide quantitative insights about building energy consumption often neglect the synergistic impacts of micro-climate and urban morphology in short temporal scale.Reduced order modelling,unavailability of rich urban datasets such as building key performance indicators for building archetypes-characterization,limit the inter-building energy dynamics consideration into UBEMs.In addition,mismatch of resolutions of spatio-temporal datasets(meso to micro scale transition),LPHI events extent prediction around UMS as well as its accurate quantitative inclusion in UBEM input organization step pose another degree of limitations.This review aims to direct attention towards an integrated-UBEM(i-UBEM)framework to capture the building load fluctuation over multi-scale spatio–temporal scenario.It highlights usage of emerging data-driven hybrid approaches,after systematically analysing developments and limitations of recent physical,data-driven artificial intelligence and machine learning(AI-ML)based modelling approaches.It also discusses the potential integration of google earth engine(GEE)-cloud computing platform in UBEM input organization step to(i)map the land surface temperature(LST)data(quantitative attribute implying LPHI event occurrence),(ii)manage and pre-process high-resolution spatio-temporal UBEM input-datasets.Further the potential of digital twin,central structed data models to integrate along UBEM workflow to reduce uncertainties related to building archetype characterizations is explored.It has also found that a trade-

An Investigation into the Compressive Strength,Permeability and Microstructure of Quartzite-Rock-Sand Mortar

River sand is an essential component used as a fine aggregate in mortar and concrete.Due to unrestrained exploitation,river sand resources are gradually being exhausted.This requires alternative solutions.This study deals with the properties of cement mortar containing different levels of manufactured sand(MS)based on quartzite,used to replace river sand.The river sand was replaced at 20%,40%,60%and 80%with MS(by weight or volume).The mechanical properties,transfer properties,and microstructure were examined and compared to a control group to study the impact of the replacement level.The results indicate that the compressive strength can be improved by increasing such a level.The strength was improved by 35.1%and 45.5%over that of the control mortar at replacement levels of 60%and 80%,respectively.Although there was a weak link between porosity and gas permeability in the mortars with manufactured sand,the gas permeability decreased with growing the replacement level.The microstructure of the MS mortar was denser,and the cement paste had fewer microcracks with increasing the replacement level.

The response and anti-stress mechanisms of nitrifying sludge under long-term exposure to Cd Se quantum dots

The wide application of CdSe quantum dots(QDs)increases its stress risk to sewage treatment systems.This study evaluated the response of nitrification performance,floc characteristics and microbial community of nitrifying sludge under long-term exposure to CdSe QDs.Results showed CdSe QDs(≥1 mg/L)would decrease the activity of ammonia monooxygenase(AMO).Under the stress of 30 mg/L CdSe QDs,the activity of AMO was reduced by 66%,while the activities of hydroxylamine oxidase and nitrite oxidoreductase were enhanced by 19.1%and 26%,respectively.Thus,the final nitrification effects were not adversely affected,and the production rates of NO_(2)^(-)-N and NO_(3)^(-)-N were accelerated.Additionally,CdSe QDs improved biomass concentration in sludge and maintained the stability of sludge settleability.High throughput sequencing analysis showed that CdSe QDs evidently reduced the abundance and diversity of microbial community in nitrifying sludge.The abundances of amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism were enriched.Moreover,CdSe QDs decreased the fluorescence intensity of tryptophan-like protein from 2,326 to 1,179 a.***.in loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances(EPSs)and from 3,792 to 3,117 a.***.in tightly bound EPSs.To relieve CdSe QD stress,the polysaccharide content increased from0.31 to 0.61 mg/g MLSS and intracellular antioxidant defense was activated.With CdSe QD level increasing to 30 mg/L,the total antioxygenic capacity and the activities of catalase were enhanced up to 411%and 143.2%,respectively.Thereby,CdSe QDs had little adverse effects on cell membrane integrity,microbial metabolism and the abundance of Nitrospirae.

From ore to MOF: A case of MIL-100(Fe) production from iron ore concentrates

Within this work, iron ore concentrates instead of elemental iron Fe0and iron salts like Fe（NO3）3and FeCl3were selected as iron source to prepare MIL-100（Fe）(labeled as MIL-100（Fe）-ore). The corresponding synthesis cost is reduced to half of the MIL-100（Fe） produced from elemental iron and iron salts. As well, the unreacted iron ore concentrates can be easily separated from the as-prepared MIL-100（Fe）-ore by magnetic to facilitate the purification process, free of the strong acids to wash the residual iron. The as-obtained MIL-100（Fe）-ore with Langmuir surface area up to 2281.6 m2g-1displayed long-term chemical stability. Furthermore, the sorption capacity of MIL-100（Fe）-ore towards malachite green（MG） is up to 522.3 mg g-1at 25℃ and initial pH = 3.2, higher than that of MIL-100（Fe） yielded by conventional hydrothermal process. Finally, the production cost and life cycle assessment of MIL-100（Fe）-ore were compared with other traditional production procedures. The results revealed that our work greatly reduced the synthesis cost and enhanced the environmental sustainability.

Defective NH2-UiO-66 for effective Pb（Ⅱ） removal:Facile fabrication strategy,performances and mechanisms

Defective NH2-UiO-66 adsorbent（named as NH2-UiO-66-SD） was successfully fabricated via post-synthesis method with the aid of both sodium carbonate anhydrous（Na2CO3） and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid（DTPA）,in which the defective structure was confirmed by various characterizations.The as-obtained defective NH2-UiO-66-SD exhibited outstanding Pb（Ⅱ） sorption capacity(172.21 mg g-1) and rapid diffusion rate(29.87mg g-1min-0.5) at room temperature with optimal pH being 5.47.The Pb（Ⅱ） sorption behavior was conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model,demonstrating that the chemical sorption of the monolayer played a dominant model.As well,the thermodynamic parameters like standard Gibbs free energy change ΔG~o(-31.21 kJ mol-1),standard enthalpy change ΔH~o(12.79 kJ-1mol-1) and standard entropy change ΔS~o(146.73J mol-1K-1) revealed that the Pb（Ⅱ） sorption process of NH2-UiO-66-SD was spontaneous,endothermic and disordered.Furthermore,the NH2-UiO-66-SD exhibited desirable desorption and recirculation performances（removal efficiencies>85 % in 5 runs） with ideal stability.Moreover,the Pb（Ⅱ） sorption mechanism of NH2-UiO-66-SD mainly included the electrostatic attractions and coordinative interactions.Overall,this work offered an intriguing method of fabricating defective NH2-UiO-66 adsorbent,which vastly enhanced adsorption efficiency for toxic metal ions elimination from wastewater.

The Turbulent Schmidt Number for Transient Contaminant Dispersion in a Large Ventilated Room Using a Realizable k-εModel

Buildings with large open spaces in which chemicals are handled are often exposed to the risk of explosions.Computational fluid dynamics is a useful and convenient way to investigate contaminant dispersion in such large spaces.The turbulent Schmidt number(Sc_(t))concept has typically been used in this regard,and most studies have adopted a default value.We studied the concentration distribution for sulfur hexafluoride(SF_(6))assuming different emission rates and considering the effect of Sc_(t).Then we examined the same problem for a light gas by assuming hydrogen gas(H_(2))as the contaminant.When SF_(6) was considered as the contaminant gas,a variation in the emission rate completely changed the concentration distribution.When the emission rate was low,the gravitational effect did not take place.For both low and high emission rates,an increase in S_(ct) accelerated the transport rate of SF_(6).In contrast,for H_(2) as the contaminant gas,a larger S_(ct) could induce a decrease in the H_(2) transport rate.

Effect of initial ammonium concentration on a one-stage partial nitrification/anammox biofilm system:Nitrogen removal performance and the microbial community

One-stage partial nitrification coupled with anammox(PN/A)technology effectively reduces the energy consumption of a biological nitrogen removal system.Inhibiting nitrite-oxidizing bacteria(NOB)is essential for this technology to maintain efficient nitrogen removal performance.Initial ammonium concentration(IAC)affects the degree of inhibited NOB.In this study,the effect of the IAC on a PN/A biofilm was investigated in a moving bed biofilm reactor.The results showed that nitrogen removal efficiency decreased from 82.49%±1.90%to 64.57%±3.96%after the IAC was reduced from 60 to 20 mg N/L,while the nitrate production ratio increased from 13.87%±0.90%to 26.50%±3.76%.NOB activity increased to1,133.86 mg N/m^(2)/day after the IAC decreased,approximately 4-fold,indicating that the IAC plays an important inhibitory role in NOB.The rate-limiting step in the mature biofilm of the PN/A system is the nitritation process and is not shifted by the IAC.The analysis of the microbial community structure in the biofilm indicates that the IAC was the dominant factor in changes in community structure.Ca.Brocadia and Ca.Jettenia were the main anammox bacteria,and Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira were the main AOB and NOB,respectively.IAC did not affect the difference in growth between Ca.Brocadia and Ca.Jettenia.Thus,modulating the IAC promoted the PN/A process with efficient nitrogen removal performance at medium to low ammonium concentrations.
