Sol-gel borate bioactive glasses(BGs)are promising ion-releasing biomaterials for wound healing ***,we report the synthesis of a series of binary B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BGs(CaO ranging from 50 to 90mol%)using a sol-gel-based *** influence of CaO content in B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BG on morphology,structure and ion release behavior was investigated in *** dissolution(ion release)and crystallization could be observed in borate BGs when CaO content increased,while the morphology was not significantly altered by increasing CaO *** results evidenced that the ion release behavior of borate BGs could be tailored by tuning the B_(2)O_(3)/CaO molar *** also evaluated the in vitro cytotoxicity,hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities of borate *** was validated for all borate ***,borate BGs exhibited composition-dependent hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic ***,higher contents of Ca in borate BGs facilitated hemostatic activity,while higher contents of B_(2)O_(3) were beneficial for pro-angiogenic *** synthesized sol-gel-derived borate BGs are promising materials for developing advanced wound healing dressings,given their fast ion release behavior and favorable hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities.

Transposition of the lingual thyroid gland to the submandibular region through a submandibular approach:A case report

BACKGROUNDEctopic thyroid at the base of the tongue is a rare congenital condition, and it iseven rarer to have clinical symptoms and require surgical intervention. Thisdisease is easily misdiagnosed preoperatively. This article reports the diagnosis,surgical treatment, and follow-up of a case of lingual *** SUMMARYThe patient was a 54-year-old woman who presented with laryngeal foreign bodysensation and dysphagia for 20 d. The lingual thyroid was considered for generalexamination, and surgery was performed to transpose the lingual thyroid to theright submaxillary region. Pathological analysis confirmed thyroid tissue. Thepatient experienced complete remission after surgery, but developed hypothyroidismand required thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and her thyroidfunction gradually recovered over *** report a rare case of lingual thyroid with marked laryngeal foreign body sensationand dysphagia. Symptoms were completely relieved by transposition surgerybut postoperative hypothyroidism developed.

Epidemiological and histopathological characteristics of thyroid carcinoma in a Tunisian health care center

Background:Thyroid carcinoma(TC)accounts for almost 0.5%–1%of total *** incidence is increasing rapidly *** studies have drawn up the epidemiological profile of TC and its clinical and pathological ***,to date,no similar studies have been conducted in ***:To establish an epidemiological profile of TC in a Tunisian health care institute and to analyze its clinical and histopathological characteristics in our *** and Methods:We present a retrospective study reviewing the cases of TC diagnosed in our institution in a 4-year ***:We collected a sample of 192 cases of *** consisted of 31 males and 161 females(83.8%)with a sex-ratio M/F of *** mean age was 46.4 *** thyroid carcinoma was the most frequent histological *** multifocality rate was 33.8%.The mean size of TC was 2.2±1.9 cm.60.9%of TC were staged pT1 and 20.3%had nodal *** thyroid microcarcinomas were noted in 37.5%of ***:Our results were consistent with those of the literature.A high proportion of pT1 and pN0 tumors were noted in our series,suggesting that TC's diagnosis and management was performed at an early stage of the disease in our *** addition,our study enabled us to notice the impact of the Coronavirus disease 19 crisis on the management of TC in our *** studies are needed to establish the epidemiological profile of TC in Tunisia and to assess its clinical and pathological features.

Isolated traumatic orbital floor fracture:An analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank

Objectives:To date,no study provides a comprehensive analysis of traumatic orbital floor fractures across the United *** aimed to characterize patient demographics,injury-related variables,and operative management in this ***:The National Trauma Data Bank was queried for open or closed orbital floor fractures from 2008 to *** data were ***:Overall,148,592 orbital floor fractures were identified,with 142,577(95.9%)closed-and 6158(4.1%)open-type fractures.A total of 106,243(71.5%)patients were male and the median patient age was 41 *** majority of patients(79.2%)had abbreviated injury scale scores of≤2,indicating minor/moderate *** mechanism of injury(MOI)differed by gender,with the most frequent being unarmed fights in men(34.3%)and falls in women(14.0%).There were 29,600 patients(19.9%)with isolated orbital floor(I-OF)*** MOI most strongly associated with operative intervention of with I-OF fractures were penetrating injuries caused by a firearm(odds ratio[OR]:2.91;95%confidence interval[CI]:1.62–5.20)and cuttings/piercings(OR:2.17;95%CI:1.29–3.65).Conclusion:This large epidemiological study reveals that orbital floor fractures tend to present with minor or moderate injuries and are more likely to require operative intervention in setting of firearm or cut/pierce injuries.

An efficient strategy for establishing a model of sensorineural deafness in rats

Ototoxic drugs can be used to produce a loss of cochlear hair cells to create animal models of deafness. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no report on the establishment of a rat deafness model through the combined application of aminoglycosides and loop diuretics. The aim of this study was to use single or combined administration of furosemide and kanamycin sulfate to establish rat models of deafness. The rats received intravenous injections of different doses of furosemide and/or intramuscular injections of kanamycin sulfate. The auditory brainstem response was measured to determine the hearing threshold after drug application. Immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy were performed to evaluate inner ear morphology. In the group receiving combined administration of furosemide and kanamycin, the auditory brainstem response threshold showed significant elevation 3 days after administration, higher than that produced by furosemide or kanamycin alone. The hair cells showed varying degrees of injury, from the apical turn to the basal turn of the cochlea and from the outer hair cells to the inner hair cells. The spiral ganglion cells maintained a normal morphology during the first week after the hair cells completely disappeared, and then gradually degenerated. After 2 months, the majority of spiral ganglion cells disappeared, but a few remained. These findings demonstrate that the combined administration of furosemide and kanamycin has a synergistic ototoxic effect, and that these drugs can produce hair cell loss and hearing loss in rats. These findings suggest that even in patients with severe deafness, electronic cochlear implants may partially restore hearing.

Monkeypox(mpox)outbreak in 2022 has caused more than 91,000 cases,has spread to 115 countries,regions,and territories,and has thus attracted much *** stability of poxvirus particles in the environment is recognized as an important factor in determining their ***,few studies have investigated the persistence of poxviruses on material surfaces under various environmental conditions,and their sensitivity to ***,we systematically measured the stability of vaccinia virus(VACV)under different environmental conditions and sensitivity to inactivation methods via plaque assay,quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction(qPCR),and Gaussia luciferase(G‐luciferase)reporter *** results show that VACV is stable on the surface of stainless steel,glass,clothing,plastic,towel,A4 paper,and tissue and persists much longer at 4℃ and?20℃,but is effectively inactivated by ultraviolet(UV)irradiation,heat treatment,and chemical *** study raises the awareness of long persistence of poxviruses in the environment and provides a simple solution to inactivate poxviruses using common disinfectants,which is expected to help the control and prevention of mpox virus and future poxvirus outbreaks.

Effects of traditional Chinese medicine on symptoms of patients with spleen and stomach deficiency-related tinnitus

BACKGROUND Tinnitus affects 10%-30%of the *** evidence suggests that tinnitus is associated with spleen ***,compared with kidney deficiency-related tinnitus,less research has been conducted on the impact of spleen defi-ciency-related *** To investigate the clinical efficacy of using Guipi Wan and dietary and lifestyle modification based on traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of patients with spleen and stomach deficiency-related *** We enrolled 110 patients with spleen and stomach deficiency-related tinnitus who were distributed into treatment(58 cases)and control(52 cases)*** severity,sleep quality and emotional state were assessed by questionnaires[Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire(TEQ);Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI);Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale-21(DASS-21)]that were used for analysis in the two groups during the initial and intervention and *** the treatment group,patients were treated with oral administration of Guipi Wan and consulted for healthy dietary and lifestyle *** the control group,patients were only assessed and not *** At the end of the 6-months,TEQ scores decreased significantly in the treatment group(P=0.021)but not in the Control *** effects in the treatment group were noted for PSQI total score(P=0.043)and several PSQI component scores in the treatment group(P<0.05).After treatment,the DASS-21 scores were significantly reduced in the treatment group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Guipi Wan combined with dietary and lifestyle modification based on regulating the spleen and stomach can be considered core to the treatment of tinnitus related to spleen and stomach deficiency.

Modern internet search analytics and thyroidectomy:What are patients asking?

Objectives:Thyroidectomy is among the most commonly performed head and neck surgeries,however,limited existing information is available on topics of interest and concern to *** Design:***:***:A search engine optimization tool was utilized to extract metadata on Google‐suggested questions that“People Also Ask”(PAA)pertaining to“thyroidectomy”and“thyroid surgery.”These questions were categorized by Rothwell criteria and topics of *** Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA)benchmark criteria enabled quality ***:A total of 250 PAA questions were ***‐oriented PAA questions describing what to expect during and after the surgery on topics such as postoperative management,risks or complications of surgery,and technical details were significantly less popular among the“thyroid surgery”group(Psurgery”received a curated collection of PAA questions that were significantly less likely to educate them on what to expect during and after surgery,as compared to patients with higher health literacy who search with the term“thyroidectomy.”This suggests that the content of PAA questions differs based on the presumed health literacy of the internet user.

Development and Optimization of Universal Bone Conduction Hearing Spectacles

Background: Non-implantable bone anchored hearing devices (BCHDs) are utilized for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss who are unsuitable for conventional hearing aids or have unresolved middle ear issues. These devices can be surgically implanted or attached using adhesive plates, dental sticks, elastic headbands, or bone conduction spectacles. Optimal fitting of bone conduction spectacles requires appropriate frame selection and contact pressure in the temporal and mastoid areas. The ANSI S3.6 and DIN EN ISO 389-3 standards recommend a contact area of approximately 1.75 cm2 and a maximum force of 5.4 N for effective sound transmission and comfort. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the technical fit and mechanical stability of universal bone conduction hearing spectacles compared to established systems. A Sen-Pressure 02 thin-film sensor connected to an Arduino Uno R3 board measured contact force in the temporal and mastoid areas. Several BCHDs were tested, including the Bruckhoff la belle BC D50/70, Radioear B71 headset, Radioear B71 elastic headband, Cochlear Baha SoundArc M, and Cochlear Baha elastic headband, on a PVC artificial head, with data analyzed using ANOVA and LSD post hoc tests. Results: The la belle BC D50/70 spectacles showed comparable contact force to established BCHDs, ensuring adequate sound transmission and comfort. Significant differences were observed between the systems, with the Radioear B71 headset exhibiting the highest forces. The la belle BC D50/70 had similar forces to the Radioear B71 elastic headband. Conclusion: The la belle BC D50/70 universal bone conduction hearing spectacles are a technically equivalent alternative to established BCHDs, maintaining pressure below 5.4 N. Future research should explore the impact of different contact forces on performance and comfort, and the integration of force control in modified spectacles.
