A new approach to pedestal differentiation for soil loss estimation-a case study from a burnt area in north-central Portugal

Soil pedestals have long been used as qualitative indicators of soil splash *** rangelands,plant-capped pedestals,generally grass tussocks,have also been used to quantitatively estimate soil loss since the first half of the twentieth *** agricultural lands,forests,and bad-lands,stone-capped pedestals have been used as qualitative and semi-quantitative indicators of active,'extreme'*** work has been reported on using capstone pedestal data for quantifying soil *** postulate that three distinct capstone pedestal types may be present in any given location and that a detailed analysis of a pedestal height histogram may be used to recognize their *** analysis can subsequently inform if soil loss can be reliably estimated and if so,which of the existing methods using pedestal height data will provide more accurate *** three proposed capstone pedestal types are:(1)neo-pedestals formed underneath surface stones exposed by(partial)removal of the soil surface cover;(2)endo-pedestals formed underneath stones that were buried in the soil but have been exposed by erosion;and(3)phoenix-pedestals formed underneath stones from collapsed *** the pedestal height histogram of any given location,a skew to smaller heights may indicate the existence of endo-and/or phoenix-pedestals,which may be revealed as a bi-(or tri)modal distribution when using a smaller bin *** concept was applied to a case study where soil loss had been monitored for control plots and mulched plots during a 5-year period following wildfire in a eucalypt *** measured pedestal heights and used methods to quantitatively assess soil loss from soil pedestal data in the available *** pedestal data at the end of the 5-year period under or overestimated soil loss in the control treatment,with results ranging from 60 to 115%of measured soil loss,depending on the *** is postulated that phoenix-and endo-pedestals may be a driving fact

Characteristics of soil quality attributes under different agroecosystems and its implications for agriculture in the Choke Mountain watershed in Ethiopia

Awareness of how soil properties vary over agroecosystems(AES) is essential for understanding soil potentials and improving site-specific agricultural management strategies for a sustainable ecosystem. This study examined the characteristics of soil quality attributes and implications for agriculture in the Choke Mountain watershed in Ethiopia. Forty-seven composite soil samples(0–20 cm deep) were collected from lowland and valley fragmented(AES 1),midland plain with black soil(AES 2), midland plain with brown soil(AES 3),sloppy midland land(AES 4), and hilly and mountainous highlands(AES 5).Ten of 15 soil quality properties were significant(P < 0.05 or 0.01), including silt, exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity, percent base saturation,p H, organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorous(P) across the five AES. However, all properties were variable with coefficients of variation from 7%(total porosity) to 169%(available P) across the AES. Although AES 2and 3 are affected by waterlogging and acidity, these two have better prospects for agriculture, but AES 1, 4, and 5 are unsuitable for agriculture because of soil erosion. Therefore, appropriate and applicable soil management strategies, particularly lime application and organic fertilizer, are fundamental to reversing soil acidity and improving soil fertility.

Emerging pollutants,such as antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes,are becoming increasingly important sources of safety and health *** water safety,which is closely related to human health,should receive more attention than natural water body ***,minimal research has been performed on the efficacy of existing treatment processes in water treatment plants for the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance *** address this research gap,this study detected and analyzed six main antibiotics and nine antibiotic resistance genes in the treatment processes of two drinking water plants in *** were collected over three months and then detected and analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and fluorescence *** total concentrations of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the influent water of the two water plants were characterized as December>March>*** precipitation and filtration processes of the Zou Maling Water Plant and Yu Shidun Water Plant successfully removed the *** ozone-activated carbon process increased the removal rate of most antibiotics to 100%.However,a large amount of antibiotic resistance gene residues remained in the effluents of the two water *** experiments demonstrated that the existing ozone-activated carbon processes could not effectively remove antibiotic resistance *** study provides a reference for the optimization of drinking water treatment processes for antibiotics and antibiotic resistance gene removal.

Dust-Holding Capacity and Bio-Chemical Changes of Plant Species Growing in an Around Opencast Mining Area of Bundelkhand Region of Uttar Pradesh, India

The present study has been carried out on a total of 50 available plant species to assess their dust-capturing capacity and biochemical performances in and around open cast granite mine areas of Jhansi district and Bundelkhand University campus treated as control site. Plant species existing under a polluted environment for a long time may be considered as potentially resistant species and recommended for green belt design in mining areas, especially to cope with dust pollution. Results showed the pollution level, especially of mining-originated dust particles holding capacity of leaves and effects of different biochemical parameters (Total Chlorophyll, Protein and Carotenoid) of existing plant species both from mining areas as well as from Bundelkhand University campus. Based on their performances, Tectona grandis L., Ficus hispida L., Calotropis procera Aiton., Butea monosperma Lam. and Ficus benghalensis L., etc. are highly tolerant species while Ficus infectoria L., Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., Ipomoea purpurea L., Allianthus excelsa Roxb. and Bauhinia variegata L. are intermediate tolerant species. T. grandis had shown the highest dust-holding capacity (2.566 ± 0.0004 mg/cm2) whereas Albizia procera (0.018 ± 0.0002 mg/cm2) was found to be the lowest dust-holding capacity. Our findings also showed that the T. grandis and F. hispida have significant dust deposition with minimal effect of dust on their leaf chlorophyll (17.447 ± 0.019 mg/g and 14.703 ± 0.201 mg/g), protein (0.699 ± 0.001 mg/g and 0.604 ± 0.002 mg/g) and carotenoid (0.372 ± 0.003 mg/g and 0.354 ± 0.003 mg/g) content respectively among all selected plant species. Therefore, in the present investigation, plant species with high tolerance to high dust-holding capacity on their leaf surfaces are preferable for green corridors as open cast granite mines and their adjacent areas.

Loss and damage caused by extreme climate events have attracted increasing *** 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(hereinafter referred to as the Convention)has agreed to adopt Loss and Damage Fund agreement,which identified the source of funding and the funds to be entrusted to the World ***,there is still ambiguous that how to allocate the funds could accelerate the effectiveness of meeting the needs for developing ***-disaster prevention and preparedness is one of the most effective measures to deal with loss and damage,which closely related to *** studies rarely analyzed quantitatively the financial needs of pre-disaster prevention and preparedness relating to adaptation to reduce loss and *** on the official reports submitted by countries under the Convention,this study analyzes the annual change in the total financial support provided by developed countries to developing countries,the proportion of pre-disaster prevention and preparedness in the adaptation needs of developing countries,and the progress in raising the current annual funding target of 100 billion USD for developed countries,to reveal the financial and technical challenges facing by developing countries on addressing loss and *** results show that by 2030,the total adaptation financial needs of developing countries are estimated to be about 3.8 trillion USD,of which pre-disaster prevention matters account for about 9%.Therefore,by 2030,developing countries will need about 342 billion USD in pre-disaster prevention and preparedness finance to withstand loss and *** addition,developing countries face a lack of technical methods to quantify information about their *** on the above analysis,this study puts forward countermeasures and suggestions,including strengthening the allocation amount of loss and damage fund on pre-disaster warning,prevention and control actions,and

Synergistic extraction of rare earth elements and alumina from coal fly ash by potassium pyrosulfate

Although coal fly ash(CFA)contains a high content of rare earth elements(REEs),the related extraction methods have limitations because of their low efficiencies,high levels of energy consumption,and other *** address these problems,in this study,we examined the coextraction of REEs and Al_(2)O_(3)from two types of Al_(2)O_(3)-rich CFA,pulverized CFA(PCFA)and circulating fluidized bed fly ash(CFBFA)using low-temperature calcination in the presence of K_(2)S_(2)O_(7).The total REEs,heavy REEs(HREEs),and light REEs(LREEs)extraction efficiencies were determined using different K_(2)S_(2)O_(7)/Al_(2)O_(3) molar ratios and calcination temperatures and correlated with the Al_(2)O_(3) extraction efficiency using Pearson correlation coefficient *** REEs are concentrated within CFA particles encapsulated in an aluminosilicate glass phase,and the REEs extraction efficiency is related to the form of Al in *** extraction efficiencies of Al_(2)O_(3) and REEs increase as the K_(2)S_(2)O_(7)/Al_(2)O_(3) molar ratio and calcination temperature increase,and the extraction selectivity of the more industrially valuable HREEs from CFBFA is *** high K_(2)S_(2)O_(7)/Al_(2)O_(3) molar ratios,the extraction of REEs from PCFA is more efficient than that from CFBFA with the regeneration of the highly active Al-O-Si bonds in *** Al_(2)O_(3) extraction efficiencies of PCFA as well as CFBFA correlate strongly with the total REEs,HREEs,and LREEs extraction *** developed extraction technology has the potential to promote CFA valorization and expand REEs resources,thus mitigating the bottlenecks of REEs procurement.

Novel Cs-Mg-Al mixed oxide with improved mobility of oxygen species for passive NOx adsorption

The development of passive NOxadsorbers with cost-benefit and high NOxstorage capacity remains an on-going challenge to after-treatment technologies at lower temperatures associated with cold-start ***,Cs1Mg3Al catalyst prepared by sol±gel method was cyclic tested in NOxstorage under 5 vol%*** 100°C,the NOxstorage capacity (1219μmol g-1) was much higher than that of Pt/Ba O/Al2O3(610μmol g-1).This provided new insights for non-noble metal catalysts in low-temperature passive *** addition of Cs improved the mobility of oxygen species and thus improved the NOxstorage *** XRD,XPS,IR spectra and in situ DRIFTs with NH3probe showed an interaction between CsOxand AlOxsites via oxygen species formed on Cs1Mg3Al *** improved mobility of oxygen species inferred from O2-TPD was consistent with high NOxstorage capacity related to enhanced formation of nitrate and additional nitrite species by ***,the addition of Mg might improve the stability of Cs1Mg3Al by stabilizing surface active oxygen species in cyclic experiments.

Understanding the dynamics of surface water area and their drivers is crucial for human survival and ecosystem stability in inland arid and semi-arid *** study took Gansu Province,China,a typical area with complex terrain and variable climate,as the research *** on Google Earth Engine,we used Landsat data and the Open-surface Water Detection Method with Enhanced Impurity Control method to monitor the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province from 1985 to 2022,and quantitatively analyzed the main causes of regional differences in surface water *** findings revealed that surface water area in Gansu Province expanded by 406.88 km2 from 1985 to *** surface water area exhibited significant fluctuations,while permanent surface water area showed a steady ***,terrestrial water storage exhibited a trend of first decreasing and then increasing,correlated with the dynamics of surface water *** change and human activities jointly affected surface hydrological processes,with the impact of climate change being slightly higher than that of human ***,climate change affected the'source'of surface water to a greater extent,while human activities tended to affect the'destination'of surface *** of surface water resources faced by inland arid and semi-arid areas like Gansu Province are ***,we summarized the surface hydrology patterns typical in inland arid and semi-arid areas and tailored surface water'supply-demand'balance *** study not only sheds light on the dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province,but also offers valuable insights for ecological protection and surface water resource management in inland arid and semi-arid areas facing water scarcity.

CO_(2)emission inventory provides fundamental data for climate research and emission ***,most global CO_(2)emission inventories were developed with energy statistics from International Energy Agency(IEA)and were available at country level with limited source ***,as the first step toward a high-resolution and dynamic updated global CO_(2)emission database,we developed a data-driven approach to construct seamless and highly-resolved energy consumption data cubes for 208 countries/territories,797 sub-country administrative divisions in 29 countries,42 fuel types,and 52 sectors,with the fusion of activity data from 24 international statistics and 65 regional/local *** CO_(2)emissions from fossil fuel combustion and cement production in 1970–2021 were then estimated with highly-resolved source category(1,484 of total)and sub-country information(797 of total).Specifically,73%of global CO_(2)emissions in 2021 were estimated with sub-country information,providing considerably improved spatial resolution for global CO_(2)emission *** the support of detailed information,the dynamics of global CO_(2)emissions across sectors and fuel types were presented,representing the evolution of global economy and progress of climate *** differences of sectoral contribution were found across sub-country administrative divisions within a given country,revealing the uneven distribution of energy and economic structure among different *** estimates were generally consistent with existing databases at aggregated level for global total or large emitters,while large discrepancies were observed for middle and small *** database,named the Multiresolution Emission Inventory model for Climate and air pollution research(MEIC)is publicly available through http://*** with highly-resolved information and timely update,which provides an independent carbon emission accounting data source for climate rese

We investigated the influence mechanism of N-doping for dissolved black carbon(DBC)photodegradation of organic *** degradation performance of N-doped dissolved black carbon(NDBC)for tetracycline(TC)(71%)is better than that for methylene blue(MB)(28%)under *** levels are both better than DBC degradation performances for TC(68%)and MB(18%)under *** species quenching experiments suggest that h and-O,are the main reactive species for NDBC photodegraded TC,while-OH and h*are the main reactive species for NDBC photodegraded MB.-OH is not observed during DBC photodegradation of *** is likely because N-doping increases valence-band(VB)energy from 1.55 eV in DBC to 2.04 eV in NDBC;the latter is strong enough to oxidize water to ***,N-doping increases the DBC band gap of 2.29 to 2.62 eV in NDBC,resulting in a higher separation efficiency of photo-generated electrons-holes in NDBC than in *** these factors give NDBC stronger photodegradation performance for TC and MB than ***-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(HPLC-MS)characterization and toxicity evaluation with the quantitative structure-activity relationship(QSAR)method suggest that TC photodegradation intermediates produced by NDBC have less aromatic structure and are less toxic than those produced by *** adopted a theoretical approach to clarify the relationship between the surface groups of NDBC and the photoactive species *** results add to the understanding of the photochemical behavior of NDBC.
