Recent studies on natural killer(NK)cells have challenged the dogma that immunological memory is a phenomenon restricted to the adaptive immune *** interactions between the NK cell receptor Ly49H and the murine cytomegalovirus virus(MCMV)-encoded glycoprotein m157 result in selective expansion of the Ly49H+NK cell subpopulation and the establishment of a long-lived memory-like population.1–3 Further,memory NK cells show augmented IFNγresponses,and transfer of the memory population into naive mice confers enhanced protection against infection-induced mortality.1 These observations along with cytotoxicity and cytokine secretion functions that overlap with CD8 T cells have led to the description of NK cells as a bridge between the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Aims According to conventional theory,larger plant species are likely to inflict more intense competition on other(smaller)*** tested a deducible prediction from this:that a larger species should generally be expected to impose greater limits on the number of species that can coexist with *** Species richness was sampled under plant canopies for a selection of woody species(‘host’species)that display a wide range of adult sizes(from small shrubs to large trees),growing within natural vegetation of the Interior Douglas-fir zone of southern British Columbia,*** data were compared with species richness levels sampled within randomly placed plots within the host species *** Findings A prominent host species size effect on species richness was detected but only narrowly at the small end of the species size *** most(90%)of the increasing size range of host species,the number of species residing under the host canopy showed no significant decrease relative to the number expected by random assembly,based on species richness within randomly defined equivalent areas within the habitat of the host *** apparent‘null effect’,we suggest,is explained not because these larger species have no effect on community *** postulate that larger species are indeed likely to be more effective in causing competitive exclusion of some smaller species(as expected from conventional theory),but that any potential limitation effect of this on resident species richness is offset for two reasons:(i)larger species also generate niche spaces that they cannot exploit under their own canopies and so have minimal impact(as competitors)on smaller species that can occupy these niches and(ii)certain other small species—despite small size—have effective competitive abilities under the severe competition that occurs within host neighbourhoods of larger *** and other recent studies call for re-evaluation of traditional views on the role o

The transcription factors DREB1s/CBFs play important roles in the regulation of plant resistance to environmental stresses and are quite useful for generating transgenic plants tolerant to these stresses. In the present work, a cDNA encoding DREB1/CBF-like protein (GhDREB1L) from cotton was isolated, and its sequence features, DNA binding preference, and expression patterns of the transcripts were also characterized. GhDREB1L contained one conserved AP2/ERF domain and its amino acid sequence was similar to the DREB1/CBF group of the DREB family from other plants. The DNA-binding domain of GhDREB1L was successfully expressed as a fusion protein in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and purified by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay revealed that the purified GhDREB1L fusion protein had a specific binding activity with the previously characterized DRE ele-ment (core sequence, ACCGAC) and also with the DRE-like sequence (core sequence, GCCGAC) in the promoter of the dehydration-responsive late embryogenesis-abundant gene LEA D113. Semi-quantita- tive RT-PCR showed that GhDREB1L was induced in the cotton cotyledons by low temperature, as well as drought and NaCl treatments. These results suggested that the novel cotton GhDREB1L might play an important role in response to low temperature as well as drought and high salinity through binding to the DRE cis-element.

Aims Relative growth rate(RGR)is an indicator of the extent to which a species is using its photosynthates for growth and it is affected by environmental factors,including ***,most of plant growth studies have been carried out at a single growth temperature or at different temperature treatments,resulting in the lack of information on the relationship between RGR and chang-ing mean daily air *** analyzed the temporal changes in RGR during early growth stages in three Cistus species grown outdoor in a common garden from seeds of different ***,we wanted to define the relationship between daily changes in RGR and mean daily air temperature for the considered *** hypothesis that intra-specific temporal variations in RGR can reflect differences in the behavior to maximize RGR(RGRmax)in response to temperature was *** Seedlings of ***,*** and *** *** were grown outdoor in the experimental garden of the Sapienza University of Rome under a Mediterranean *** analyzed early growth with non-linear growth models and calcu-lated function-derived RGRs as the derivative with respect to time of the parameterized functions used to predict height divided by cur-rent *** relationships between function-derived RGRs and mean daily air temperature were analyzed by linear and non-linear models,which were ranked according to their standard errors and correlation *** temperature dependency of RGRmax per each provenance was evaluated through the relationship between RGRmax and the coefficients of the best regression model *** Findings A parameter that could summarize the temperature dependency of RGR up to RGRmax during the early growth stages for the selected provenances was *** allowed us to highlight that a greater RGR temperature responsiveness was related to a delay in the time to reach RGRmax independently by the species.

Regeneration of many cell types found in adult organs relies upon the presence of relatively small pools of undifferentiated stem cells. Initial studies that attempted to isolate stem cells and propagate them in vitro have been complemented by analysis of stem cells in their endogenous tissues where they are subject to a variety of regulatory cues. This has been facilitated by the advent of new methods for lineage tracing and genetic manipulation of stem cells and their associated niche cells. The picture that is emerging is that different stem cell populations utilize diverse processes to ensure maintenance of the stem cell pool accompanied by production of cells committed to regenerate differentiated cells.

Vocal communication plays an important role for individual recognition and male-female interaction during mating in greater horseshoe bats,especially in respect to mate fidelity,which ensures that the bats can maintain a stable social *** studies,however,have addressed the calling behavior during copulating in ***,we initially report the copulation vocalizations and behaviors of both male and female greater horseshoe *** copulation,the male assumed a dorsal position and arched his back,arming around the female using his feet and *** male repeatedly produced very short constant frequency(SCF) syllables with high intensity and repetition rate(male 1:16.48±4.8 ms,male 2:17.79±4.03 ms) when he tried to insert the penis into the female,and then long syllables(male 1:42.08±12.67 ms,male 2:43.02±11.44 ms) after penile *** female bats sometime refused the male bats in the early phase of copulations as emitting noise bursts and broad-band vocalizations,but kept silence during actual *** also found that the SCF copulation calls of one male remained stable peak frequencies on different copulation days although its echolocation call frequency varied each ***,different male individuals maintained their own "private frequency" in the SCF copulation ***,we predicted that the SCF copulation calls may serve as an indicator for female greater horseshoe bats to recognize the mating males in order to maintain mate fidelity because horseshoe bats exhibit sexual segregation before *** results stipulate further studies on mating system and copulation strategies in polygynous *** work may also aid in promoting the preservation of greater horseshoe bats.

Recent research has revealed a remarkable diversity of viruses in archaeal-rich environments where spindles, spheres, fila- ments and rods are common, together with other exceptional morphotypes never recorded previously. Moreover, their dou- ble-stranded DNA genomes carry very few genes exhibiting homology to those of bacterial and eukaryal viruses. Studies on viral life cycles are still at a preliminary stage but important insights are being gained especially from microarray analyses of viral transcripts for a few model virus-host systems. Recently, evidence has been presented for some exceptional archaeal- nspecific mechanisms for extra-cellular morphological development of virions and for their cellular extrusion. Here we sum- marise some of the recent developments in this rapidly developing and exciting research area.
