Enhanced heavy and extra heavy oil recovery:Current status and new trends

Due to the increased demand for energy resources these days,especially due to the Russian-Ukrainian war,the focus of the major countries is turning strongly towards improving oil production,especially heavy and extra heavy oil,which represents 40%of the world oil ***-based and thermal(EOR)procedures are promising techniques for recovering heavy oil reservoirs,but they suffer from a sequence of problems and complications that arise after long-term *** complications comprise steam breakthrough,steam overlap,and steam/rock *** research presents the currently applied techniques to maximize the productivity of heavy oil,such as steam injection,cyclic steam stimulation,in-situ combustion,and steam-assisted gravity *** technologies face numerous obstacles,as they are energy and water-intensive processes that are not environmentally *** research also presents future trends in energy-saving and environmentally friendly techniques that enhance heavy oil recovery through vapor extraction(VAPEX)steam-solvent hybrid techniques,electromagnetic energy,sonication,and *** findings of this review reported that all the presented techniques focus on how to reduce the oil viscosity and in-situ upgrade the crude oil *** turn,these enhance both the productivity rate and oil recovery and minimize the production *** article can be considered a comprehensive review of thermal recovery methods in heavy and extra-heavy oil,in addition to screening criteria used for each method.

Long-term hydrochemical monitoring and geothermometry:understanding groundwater salinization and thermal fluid contamination in Mila’s basin,Northeastern Algeria

The regular hydrochemical monitoring of groundwater in the Mila basin over an extended period has provided valuable insights into the origin of dissolved salts and the hydrogeochemical processes controlling water *** data reveals that the shallow Karst aquifer shows an increase in TDS of 162 mg L^(-1) while the ther-mal carbonate aquifer that is also used for drinking water supply exhibits an increase of 178 mg L^(-1).Additionally,significant temperature variations are recorded at the sur-face in the shallow aquifers and the waters are *** of dissolved major and minor elements has identified several processes influencing the chemical composition namely:dissolution of evaporitic minerals,reduction of sulphates,congruent and incongruent car-bonates’dissolution,dedolomitization and silicates’*** hydrogeochemical and geothermometric results show a mixing of saline thermal water with recharge water of meteoric *** main geothermalfields have been identified,a partially evolved water reservoir and a water reservoir whosefluid interacts with sulphuric acid(H_(2)S)of magmatic *** hot waters that are char-acterized by a strong hydrothermal alteration do ascend through faults and fractures and contribute to the contamination of shallower *** the geothermometry and the hydrogeochemistry of waters is crucial for managing and protecting the quality of groundwater resources in the Mila basin,in order to ensure sustainable water supply for the region.A conceptual model for groundwater circulation and mineralization acquisition has been established to further enhance under-standing in this regard.

Flexible sensors with zero Poisson's ratio

Flexible sensors have been developed for the perception of various stimuli. However, complex deformation,usually resulting from forces or strains from multi-axes, can be challenging to measure due to the lack of independent perception of multiaxial stimuli. Herein, flexible sensors based on the metamaterial membrane with zero Poisson's ratio(ZPR) are proposed to achieve independent detection of biaxial stimuli. By deliberately designing the geometric dimensions and arrangement parameters of elements, the Poisson's ratio of an elastomer membrane can be modulated from negative to positive, and the ZPR membrane can maintain a constant transverse dimension under longitudinal stimuli. Due to the accurate monitoring of grasping force by ZPR sensors that are insensitive to curvatures of contact surfaces, rigid robotic manipulators can be guided to safely grasp deformable objects. Meanwhile, the ZPR sensor can also precisely distinguish different states of manipulators. When ZPR sensors are attached to a thermal-actuation soft robot, they can accurately detect the moving distance and direction. This work presents a new strategy for independent biaxial stimuli perception through the design of mechanical metamaterials, and may inspire the future development of advanced flexible sensors for healthcare, human–machine interfaces and robotic tactile sensing.

Coupled bio-chemo-hydro-mechanical modeling of microbially induced calcite precipitation process considering biomass encapsulation using a micro-scale relationship

In this research,we focus on the free-surface deformation of a one-dimensional elastic semiconductor medium as a function of magnetic field and moisture *** problem aims to analyze the interconnection between plasma and moisture diffusivity processes,as well as thermo-elastic *** study examines the photothermoelasticity transport process while considering the impact of moisture *** employing Laplace’s transformation technique,we derive the governing equations of the photo-thermo-elastic *** equations include the equations for carrier density,elastic waves,moisture transport,heat conduction,and constitutive *** stresses,thermal conditions,and plasma boundary conditions are used to calculate the fundamental physical parameters in the Laplace *** employing numerical techniques,the Laplace transform is inverted to get complete time-domain solutions for the primary physical domains under ***,thermoelastic,and thermoelectric characteristics are employed in conjunction with a graphical analysis that takes into consideration the effects of applied forces on displacement,moisture concentration,carrier density,stress due to forces,and temperature distribution.

Experimental determination of grain density function of AZ91/SiC composite with different mass fractions of SiC and undercoolings using heterogeneous nucleation model

The grain density,Nv,in the solid state after solidification of AZ91/SiC composite is a function of maximum undercooling,ΔT,of a liquid *** type of function depends on the characteristics of heterogeneous nucleation sites and number of SiC present in the *** aim of this paper was selection of parameters for the model describing the relationship between the grain density of primary phase and *** model in connection with model of crystallisation,which is based on chemical elements diffusion and grain interface kinetics,can be used to predict casting quality and its *** models have parameters,which exact values are usually not known and sometimes even their physical meaning is under *** parameters can be obtained after mathematical analysis of the experimental *** composites with 0,1,2,3 and 4wt.% of SiC particles were *** AZ91 alloy was a matrix of the composite reinforcement SiC *** composite was cast to prepare four different thickness *** were taken from the region near to the thermocouple,to analyze the undercooling for different composites and thickness plates and its influence on the grain *** microstructure and thermal analysis gave set of values that connect mass fraction of SiC particles,and undercooling with grain *** values were used to approximate nucleation model adjustment *** model can be very useful in modelling composites microstructure.

Implementation and validation of a volume-of-fluid and discrete-element-method combined solver in OpenFOAM

Numerous gas-liquid-solid flows exist in chemical engineering and metallurgical processes. Numerical modeling is an important topic that can be used to improve the design and investigate the operating conditions of these processes. The complicated interphase interaction within such three-phase systems, which include free surfaces and discrete phases, poses challenges in the existing methods. We imple- mented a volume-of-fluid （VOF） and discrete-element-method （DEM） combined solver, which should be useful for modeling the gas-liquid-solid systems, within the OpenFOAM framework. The Du Plessis and Masliyah drag force, added mass force, and capillary force were considered for fluid-particle coupling. The VOF-DEM solver was tested in three different cases, namely, particles in pure gas, particle collision in water, and gas-liquid-solid three-phase dam break. The results were validated against previous experi- ments and good agreement was obtained between the simulations and the experiments, which indicates the accuracy and suitability of this VOF-DEM solver for gas-liquid-solid systems.

Modeling of Packed Bed Methanol Steam Reformer Integrated with Tubular High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

This work proposes a novel tubular structure of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC)integrated with a built-in packed-bed methanol steam reformer to provide hydrogen for power output.A two-dimensional axisymmetric non-isothermal model was developed in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4 to simulate the performance of a tubular high temperature proton membrane fuel cell and a packed bed methanol *** model considers the coupling multi-physical processes,including methanol reforming reaction,water gas shift reaction,methanol cracking reaction as well as the heat,mass and momentum transport *** sub-model of the tubular packed-bed methanol reformer is validated between 433 K and 493 K with the experimental data reported in the *** sub-model of the high temperature proton exchange fuel cell is validated between 393 K and 433 K with the published *** results show that power output and temperature distribution of the integrated unit depend on methanol flow rates and working *** was suggested that stable power generation performance of 0.14 W/cm_(2)and temperature drop in methanol steam reformer of≤10 K could be achieved by controlling the methanol space-time ratio of≥250 kg·s/mol with working voltage at 0.6 V,even in the absence of an external heat source.

Near-surface wind speed exerts profound impacts on many environmental issues,while the long-term(≥60 years)trend and multidecadal variability in the wind speed and its underlying causes in global high-elevation and mountainous areas(e.g.,Tibetan Plateau)remain largely ***,by examining homogenized wind speed data from 104 meteorological stations over the Tibetan Plateau for 1961-2020 and ERA5 reanalysis datasets,we investigated the variability and long-term trend in the near-surface wind speed and revealed the role played by the westerly and Asian *** results show that the homogenized annual wind speed displays a decreasing trend(-0.091 m s^(−1)per decade,pprocesses associated with westerly and Asian monsoon changes are in concordance with wind speed change,in terms of overall weakened horizontal air flow(i.e.,geostrophic wind speed),declined vertical thermal and dynamic momentum transfer(i.e.,atmospheric stratification thermal instability and vertical wind shear),and varied Tibetan Plateau *** indicates that to varying degrees these processes may have contributed to the changes in near-surface wind speed over the Tibetan *** study has implications for wind power production and soil wind erosion prevention in the Tibetan Plateau.

In?uence of Carbon Equivalent Value on the Weld Bead Bending Properties of High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel Plates

The contribution of chemical compositions in terms of carbon equivalent value（CEV） on impending crack propagation during weld bead bend tests（WBBTs） was studied with five different high-strength lowalloy steel plates that underwent different rolling processes. The test showed that cracks developed at the weld joint, easily passed through the coarse-grain heat-affected zone（CGHAZ）, and finally were arrested within the heat-affected zone（HAZ）. An apparent decrease in the average crack length, which consequently indicated improvement in crack arrestability, was found with decreasing CEV. In addition,the relatively fine microstructure in the HAZ of low-CEV steel plates helped in preventing the crack from further propagation. Special emphasis was placed on the empirical expectation of critical CEV above which WBBT might fail.
