Lexicon-based fine-tuning of multilingual language models for low-resource language sentiment analysis

Pre-trained multilingual language models (PMLMs) such as mBERT and XLM-R have shown good cross-lingual transferability. However, they are not specifically trained to capture cross-lingual signals concerning sentiment words. This poses a disadvantage for low-resource languages (LRLs) that are under-represented in these models. To better fine-tune these models for sentiment classification in LRLs, a novel intermediate task fine-tuning (ITFT) technique based on a sentiment lexicon of a high-resource language (HRL) is introduced. The authors experiment with LRLs Sinhala, Tamil and Bengali for a 3-class sentiment classification task and show that this method outperforms vanilla fine-tuning of the PMLM. It also outperforms or is on-par with basic ITFT that relies on an HRL sentiment classification dataset.

Variation in chromosome number in the seedling progeny of a somaclone of Paspalum dilatatum

The somaclone, C39, derived by tissue culture from the obligate apomict Paspalum dilatatum cv Raki (2n=50), had 50 chromosomes and a karyotype apparently identical to ***2 seedlings of C39 showed a high degree of phenotypic variation which was of ten associated with increased chromosome numbers, but some of the variant seedlings were karyotypically indistinguishable from Raki or C39. Plants with increased chromosome numbers exhibited a high degree of intraplant chromosome variation (aneusomaty). In one of the SC2seedlings, the chromosome number of root tip cells varied from 58 to 82 and in several other seedlings the range was more than 10. The results suggested that the ability to form seed apomictically was much reduced in C39 and that this plant showed some capacity for sexual reproduction and the resulting seedlings, with a chromosome number of about 70, were genetically unstable. Of 11 SC2 seedlings examined cytolog ically, 6 did not produce any viable seed. Seedlings grown from seed of the remaining 5 plants showed that aneusomaty persisted in the SC3 generation. SC3 seedlings which were phenotypically similar to their maternal parent showed a similar range of chromosome numbers to that parent. Some of the SC3 seedlings exhibited an even wider range of chromosome numbers (e.g.56-136), and these plants were all dwarfs.

Chromosomal localization of a tandemly repeated DNA sequence in Trifolium repens L

A karyotype of Trifolium repens constructed from mitotic cells revealed 13 pairs of metacentric and 3 pairs of submetacentric chromosomes including a pair of satellites located at the end of the short arm of chromosome 16.C-bands were identified around the centromeric regions of 8 pairs of chromosomes. A 350 bp tandemly repeated DNA sequence from T. repens labelled with digoxygenin hybridized to the proximal centromeric regions of 12 chromosome pairs. Some correlation between the distribution of the repeat sequence and the distribution of C-banding was demonstrated.

Efficient strategies for leave-one-out cross validation for genomic best linear unbiased prediction

Background： A random multiple-regression model that simultaneously fit all allele substitution effects for additive markers or haplotypes as uncorrelated random effects was proposed for Best Linear Unbiased Prediction, using whole-genome data. Leave-one-out cross validation can be used to quantify the predictive ability of a statistical ***： Naive application of Leave-one-out cross validation is computationally intensive because the training and validation analyses need to be repeated n times, once for each observation. Efficient Leave-one-out cross validation strategies are presented here, requiring little more effort than a single ***： Efficient Leave-one-out cross validation strategies is 786 times faster than the naive application for a simulated dataset with 1,000 observations and 10,000 markers and 99 times faster with 1,000 observations and 100 markers. These efficiencies relative to the naive approach using the same model will increase with increases in the number of ***： Efficient Leave-one-out cross validation strategies are presented here, requiring little more effort than a single analysis.

Theory and Applications of Ignition with Variable Activation Energy

The determination of critical conditions for thermal ignition of combustible materials has been traditionally studied by the use of one overall reaction with bounded parameter values for the activation energy and other chemical constants, Significant errors can occur in the values of the threshold parameters for ignition when there are two (or more) simultaneous reactions present with distinct values of the chemical constants. Recent work with simultaneous parallel reactions showed the thresholds for ignition could be lowered in this case. In this paper, motivated by experimental results for forest litter and coal, it is shown that for sequential reactions (different values of parameters in different temperature ranges) that the threshold conditions are changed (safer for lower ambient temperatures and less safe for higher ambient temperatures). The mathematical analysis is summarised and a detailed analysis is given for the forest litter and crushed coal applications. The experimental results show that variable activation energy does occur and that this extension of the classical Frank-Kamenetskii theory is needed. Here the analysis is confined to the slab geometry only but the ideas developed can easily be extended to more general systems, including those involving mass transport, consumption, and phase changes.

Identification of recombination hotspots and quantitative trait loci for recombination rate in layer chickens

Background: The frequency of recombination events varies across the genome and between individuals, which may be related to some genomic features. The objective of this study was to assess the frequency of recombination events and to identify QTL(quantitative trait loci) for recombination rate in two purebred layer chicken ***: A total of 1200 white-egg layers(WL) were genotyped with 580 K SNPs and 5108 brown-egg layers(BL)were genotyped with 42 K SNPs(single nucleotide polymorphisms). Recombination events were identified within half-sib families and both the number of recombination events and the recombination rate was calculated within each0.5 Mb window of the genome. The 10% of windows with the highest recombination rate on each chromosome were considered to be recombination hotspots. A BayesB model was used separately for each line to identify genomic regions associated with the genome-wide number of recombination event per meiosis. Regions that explained more than 0.8% of genetic variance of recombination rate were considered to harbor ***: Heritability of recombination rate was estimated at 0.17 in WL and 0.16 in BL. On average, 11.3 and 23.2 recombination events were detected per individual across the genome in 1301 and 9292 meioses in the WL and BL,respectively. The estimated recombination rates differed significantly between the lines, which could be due to differences in inbreeding levels, and haplotype structures. Dams had about 5% to 20% higher recombination rates per meiosis than sires in both lines. Recombination rate per 0.5 Mb window had a strong negative correlation with chromosome size and a strong positive correlation with GC content and with CpG island density across the genome in both lines. Different QTL for recombination rate were identified in the two lines.
