The relationship between age,acceptable noise level,and listening effort in middle-aged and older-aged individuals

Objective:The purpose of the study was to evaluate listening effort in adults who experience varied annoyance towards *** and methods:Fifty native Kannada-speaking adults aged 41e68 years *** evaluated the participant's acceptable noise level while listening to ***,a sentence-final wordidentification and recall test at 0 dB SNR(less favorable condition)and 4 dB SNR(relatively favorable condition)was used to assess listening *** repeat and recall scores were obtained for each ***:The regression model revealed that the listening effort increased by 0.6%at 0 dB SNR and by 0.5%at 4 dB SNR with every one-year advancement in *** effort increased by 0.9%at 0 dB SNR and by 0.7%at 4 dB SNR with every one dB change in the value of Acceptable Noise Level(ANL).At 0 dB SNR and 4 dB SNR,a moderate and mild negative correlation was noted respectively between listening effort and annoyance towards noise when the factor age was ***:Listening effort increases with age,and its effect is more in less favorable than in relatively favorable ***,if the annoyance towards noise was controlled,the impact of age on listening effort was *** effort correlated with the level of annoyance once the age effect was ***,the listening effort was predicted from the ANL to a moderate degree.

Automatic Tongue Tracking in X-Ray Images

X-ray imaging is an effective technique to obtain the continuous motions of the vocal tract during speech, and Active appearance model(AAM) is a useful tool to analyze the X-ray images. However, for the task of tongue tracking in X-ray images, the accuracy of AAM fitting is insufficient. AAM aims to minimize the residual error between the model appearance and the input image. It often fails to accurately converge to the true landmarks. To improve the tracking accuracy, we propose a fitting method by combining Constrained local model(CLM) into *** our method, we first combine the objective functions of AAM and CLM into a single objective function. Then,we pro ject out the texture variation and derive a gradient based method to optimize the objective function. Our method effectively incorporates not only the shape prior and global texture, but also local texture around each landmark. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the fitting error. We also show that realistic 3D tongue animation can be created by using tongue tracking results of the X-ray images.

Lexical Tones and Word Learning in Mandarin-Speaking Children at Three Years of Age(Invited paper)

Unlike Indo-European languages,Mandarin relies heavily on lexical tones to distinguish word identity. Using the intermodal preferential looking paradigm, this study examined 3-year-old Mandarinspeakers＇ ability to use Mandarin lexical tones in learning new words. Results showed that when children were presented with Tone 2（rising） and Tone 4（falling）pairs, children successfully learned both ***, when children were presented with Tone 2and Tone 3（dipping） pairs, they learned the Tone 2word but not the Tone 3 one. Children were then divided into two groups based on their learning performance on the Tone 3 word. Successful learning of Tone 3 words was observed in the high performers but not in the low performers, who consistently misused Tone 3 as Tone 2. This study showed that Mandarinspeaking 3-year-olds could use lexical tones to learn words under experimental conditions, and that the difficulty of Tone 3 acquisition may be related to its lower level of perceptual distinctiveness compared with other tones.

A child with severe inner ear malformations with favorable hearing utilization and balance functions after wearing hearing aids

Infants with congenital deafness caused by severe bilateral inner ear malformations frequently suffer from severe hearing loss and poor balance. Unfortunately, the use of hearing aids is usually ineffective in recovering hearing, necessitating cochlear implants. We report a case of a 6-year-old boy with congenital deafness and bilateral inner ear malformations(right side, incomplete partition type I [IP-I]; left side, common cavity deformity). Hearing aids had a remarkable effect in this patient, enabling sufficient and favorable hearing recovery such as to allow the patient to engage in daily conversations. Per-rotatory nystagmus was recorded on an electronystagmogram for both right and left rotations in a damped rotational chair test. It is rare for deaf children with severe bilateral inner ear malformation to demonstrate favorable development in hearing and good equilibrium function. Our findings suggest that auditoryevestibular hair cells in this patient may have been partially preserved despite IP-I in the right ear and common cavity deformity of the left ear.

Background:Resilience is crucial for medical college students to thrive in the highly stressful environment of medical ***,the prevalence of problematic internet use(PIU)in this population may negatively impact their *** study investigated the influence of problematic online gaming(PG)and problematic social media use(PSMU)on the resilience of medical college students in ***:A sample of 5075 first-year medical college students from four Chinese universities was *** served as the independent variable,resilience as the dependent variable,fatigue as the mediator,and PSMU as the *** equation modeling was conducted using LISREL ***,a moderated mediation model was evaluated using the jAMM module in jamovi ***:The study’s findings revealed significant negative correlations between resilience and the variables of PG,PSMU,and *** mediated the relationship between PG and resilience(B=−0.04,95%CI=[−0.05,−0.03]).PSMU moderated the direct relationship between PG and resilience with the interaction term PG×PSMU significant(B=−0.004,t=−6.501,p<0.001)and the first stage(PG→fatigue)of the mediation with PG×PSMU significant(B=0.055,t=8.351,p<0.001).The detrimental effects of PG on resilience were more pronounced among individuals with lower levels of ***:This study concluded that addressing PIU,particularly PG,is essential for fostering resilience in medical college *** PSMU itself is maladaptive,the underlying social media engagement may serve a protective role through social support in mitigating the adverse effects of PG on resilience.

Auditory cortical stimulability in non habilitated individuals-An evidence from CAEPs

Objective:The effect of long term auditory deprivation on Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials(CAEPs)especially in human models is not well ***,the current study was aimed to investigate the effects of long-term auditory deprivation and stimulability of auditory cortex in non habilitated congenitally deaf adolescents and adults using *** and Results:A total of 27 non-habilitated congenitally deaf adolescents/adults with age and gender matched normal hearing adolescents/adults participated in the *** congenitally deaf group was fitted with high gain hearing aids(first fit).Further,the CAEPs were *** obtained CAEP components were assessed for group effect,source and topographical *** between group analysis for CAEP responses showed a significant difference only for P2 latency and *** source analysis revealed that,in the normal hearing group for CAEPs,the sources were within the temporal ***,in the congenitally deaf group,along with the temporal cortex,the bilateral prefrontal cortex also was ***:The findings revealed that it is possible to stimulate and evoke a matured CAEP response from a long deprived auditory system with adequate acoustic *** presence of CAEP responses is indicative of the functionality of the innate auditory pathway and the crossmodal plasticity in long auditory deprived individuals.

A Dialectal Chinese speech Recognition Framework

A framework for dialectal Chinese speech recognition is proposed and studied, in which a relatively small dialectal Chinese （or in other words Chinese influenced by the native dialect） speech corpus and dialect-related knowledge are adopted to transform a standard Chinese （or Putonghua, abbreviated as PTH） speech recognizer into a dialectal Chinese speech recognizer. Two kinds of knowledge sources are explored： one is expert knowledge and the other is a small dialectal Chinese corpus. These knowledge sources provide information at four levels： phonetic level, lexicon level, language level, and acoustic decoder level. This paper takes Wu dialectal Chinese （WDC） as an example target language. The goal is to establish a WDC speech recognizer from an existing PTH speech recognizer based on the Initial-Final structure of the Chinese language and a study of how dialectal Chinese speakers speak Putonghua. The authors propose to use contextindependent PTH-IF mappings （where IF means either a Chinese Initial or a Chinese Final）, context-independent WDC-IF mappings, and syllable-dependent WDC-IF mappings （obtained from either experts or data）, and combine them with the supervised maximum likelihood linear regression （MLLR） acoustic model adaptation method. To reduce the size of the multipronunciation lexicon introduced by the IF mappings, which might also enlarge the lexicon confusion and hence lead to the performance degradation, a Multi-Pronunciation Expansion （MPE） method based on the accumulated uni-gram probability （AUP） is proposed. In addition, some commonly used WDC words are selected and added to the lexicon. Compared with the original PTH speech recognizer, the resulting WDC speech recognizer achieves 10-18% absolute Character Error Rate （CER） reduction when recognizing WDC, with only a 0.62% CER increase when recognizing PTH. Glucose Protects Cochlear Hair Cells Against Oxidative Stress and Attenuates Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Mice

Oxidative stress is the key determinant in the pathogenesis of noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL). Given that cellular defense against oxidative stress is an energyconsuming process, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether increasing energy availability by glucose supplementation protects cochlear hair cells against oxidative stress and attenuates NIHL. Our results revealed that glucose supplementation reduced the noiseinduced formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and consequently attenuated noise-induced loss of outer hair cells, inner hair cell synaptic ribbons, and NIHL in CBA/J mice. In cochlear explants, glucose supplementation increased the levels of ATP and NADPH, as well as attenuating H_2O_2-induced ROS production and cytotoxicity. Moreover, pharmacological inhibition of glucose transporter type 1 activity abolished the protective effects of glucose against oxidative stress in HEI-OC1 cells. These findings suggest that energy availability is crucial for oxidative stress resistance and glucose supplementation offers a simple and effective approach for the protection of cochlear hair cells against oxidative stress and NIHL.
