In-situ soil texture classification and physical clay content measurement based on multi-source information fusion

Soil texture is one of the most important soil characteristics that affect soil *** acquisition of soil texture information is of great significance for accurate farmland *** soil texture analysis methods are relatively complicated and cannot meet the requirements of temporal and spatial *** research introduced a self-developed vehicle-mounted in-situ soil texture detection system,which can predict the type of soil texture and the particle composition of the texture,and obtain real-time data during the measurement process without preprocessing the soil *** detection system is mainly composed of a conductivity measuring device,a camera,an auxiliary mechanical structure,and a control *** soil electrical conductivity(ECa)and the texture features extracted from the surface image were input into the embedded model to realize real-time texture *** order to find the best model suitable for the detection system,measurements were carried out in three test fields in Northeast and North China to compare the performance of different models applied to the detection *** results showed that for soil texture classification,ExtraTrees performed best,with Precision,Recall,and F1 all being *** particle content of soil texture prediction,the R2 of ExtraTrees was 0.77,and RMSE and MAPE were 74.72 and *** was observed that ECa,Moment of inertia,and Entropy had larger weights in the drawn model influence weight map,and they are the main contributors to predicting soil *** results showed the potential of the vehicle-mounted in-situ soil texture detection system,which can provide a basis for fast,cost-effective,and efficient soil texture analysis.

Multidirectional 3D printed functionally graded modular joint actuated by TCPFL muscles for soft robots

Highly deformable bodies are essential for numerous types of applications in all sorts of environments. Joint-like structures comprising a ball and socket joint have many degrees of freedom that allow mobility of many biomimetic structures. Recently, soft robots are favored over rigid structures for their highly compliant material, high-deformation properties at low forces, and ability to operate in di fficult environments. However, it is still challenging to fabricate complex designs that satisfy application constraints due to the combined e ffects of material properties, actuation method, and structural geometry on the performance of the soft robot. Therefore, a combination of a rigid joint and a soft body can help achieve modular robots with fully functional body morphology. Yet, the fabrication of soft parts requires extensive molding for complex shapes, which comprises several processes and can be time-consuming. In addition, molded connections between extremely soft materials and hard materials can be critical failing points. In this paper, we present a functionally graded 3D-printed joint-like structure actuated by novel contractile actuators. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) via 3D printing allow for extensive material property enhancement and control which warrant tunable functionalities of the system. The 3D-printed structure is made of 3 rigid ball and socket joints connected in series and actuated by integrating twisted and coiled polymer fishing line ( TCPFL) actuators, which are con fined in the FGM accordion-shaped channels. The implementation of the untethered T CPFL actuation system can be highly bene ficial for deployment in environments that require low vibrations and silent actuation. The fishing line TCP actuators produce an actuation strain up to 40% and bend the joint up to 40° in any direction. An Improved SPSA Algorithm for System Identification Using Fuzzy Rules for Training Neural Networks

Simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation （SPSA） belongs to the class of gradient-free optimization methods that extract gradient information from successive objective function evaluation. This paper describes an improved SPSA algorithm, which entails fuzzy adaptive gain sequences, gradient smoothing, and a step rejection procedure to enhance convergence and stability. The proposed fuzzy adaptive simultaneous perturbation approximation （FASPA） algorithm is particularly well suited to problems involving a large number of parameters such as those encountered in nonlinear system identification using neural networks （NNs）. Accordingly, a multilayer perceptron （MLP） network with popular training algorithms was used to predicate the system response. We found that an MLP trained by FASPSA had the desired accuracy that was comparable to results obtained by traditional system identification algorithms. Simulation results for typical nonlinear systems demonstrate that the proposed NN architecture trained with FASPSA yields improved system identification as measured by reduced time of convergence and a smaller identification error.

Stochastic averaging of quasi integrable and resonant Hamiltonian systems excited by fractional Gaussian noise with Hurst index 1/2

A stochastic averaging method of quasi integrable and resonant Hamiltonian systems under excitation of fractional Gaussian noise （fGn） with the Hurst index 1/2 〈 H 〈 1 is proposed. First, the definition and the basic property of fGn and related fractional Brownian motion （iBm） are briefly introduced. Then, the averaged fractional stochastic differential equations （SDEs） for the first integrals and combinations of angle variables of the associated Hamiltonian systems are derived. The stationary probability density and statistics of the original systems are then obtained approximately by simulating the averaged SDEs numerically. An example is worked out to illustrate the proposed stochastic averaging method. It is shown that the results obtained by using the proposed stochastic averaging method and those from digital simulation of original system agree well.

Robust image processing algorithm for computational resource limited smart apple sunburn sensing system

Heat and light stress causes sunburn to the maturing apple fruits and results in crop production and quality ***,when the fruit surface temperature(FST)rises above critical limits for a prolonged duration,the fruit may suffer several physiological disorders including *** manage apple sunburn,monitoring FST is critical and our group at Washington State University is developing a noncontact smart sensing system that integrates thermal infrared and visible imaging sensors for real time FST *** system needs to perform in-field imagery data analysis onboard a single board computer with processing unit that has limited computational ***,key objective of this study was to develop a novel image processing algorithm optimized to use available resources of a single board *** logic flow includes color space transformation,k-means++classification and morphological operators prior to fruit segmentation and FST *** developed algorithm demonstrated the segmentation accuracy of 57.78%(missing error=12.09%and segmentation error=0.13%).This aided successful apple FST estimation that was 10–18C warmer than ambient air ***,algorithm reduced the imagery data processing time cost of the smart sensing systemfrom 87 s to 44 s using image compression approach.

Machine learning-based seismic assessment of framed structures with soil-structure interaction

The objective of the current study is to propose an expert system framework based on a supervised machine learning technique(MLT)to predict the seismic performance of low-to mid-rise frame structures considering soil-structure interaction(SSI).The methodology of the framework is based on examining different MLTs to obtain the highest possible accuracy for *** the MLT,a sensitivity analysis was conducted on the main SSI parameters to select the most effective input *** limit state criteria were used for the seismic evaluation within the process.A new global seismic assessment ratio was introduced that considers both serviceability and strength aspects by utilizing three different engineering demand parameters(EDPs).The proposed framework is novel because it enables the designer to seismically assess the structure,while simultaneously considering different EDPs and multiple limit ***,the framework provides recommendations for building component design based on the newly introduced global seismic assessment ratio,which considers different levels of seismic *** proposed framework was validated through comparison using non-linear time history(NLTH)*** results show that the proposed framework provides more accurate results than conventional ***,the generalization potential of the proposed framework was tested by investigating two different types of structural irregularities,namely,stiffness and mass *** results from the framework were in good agreement with the NLTH analysis results for the selected case studies,and peak ground acceleration(PGA)was found to be the most influential input parameter in the assessment process for the case study models *** proposed framework shows high generalization potential for low-to mid-rise structures.
