Performances of an air thermal energy utilization system developed with fan-coil units in large-scale plastic tunnels covered with external blanket

To improve the problem of low temperature at night in winter due to the lack of thermal storage in large-span plastic tunnels,an air thermal energy utilization system(ATEUS)was developed with fan-coil units to heat a large-scale plastic tunnel covered with an external blanket(LPTEB)on winter *** ATEUS was composed of nine fan-coil units mounted on top of the LPTEB,a water reservoir,pipes,and a water circulation *** the heat exchange between the air and the water flowing through the coils,the thermal energy from the air can be collected in the daytime,or the thermal energy in the water can be released into the LPTEB at *** sunny days,the collected thermal energy from the air in the daytime(E_(c))and released thermal energy at night(E_(r))were 0.25-0.44 MJ/m^(2) and 0.24-0.38 MJ/m^(2),*** ATEUS as a heating system,its coefficient of performance(COP),which is the ratio of the heat consumption of LPTEB to the power consumption of ATEUS,ranged from 1.6-2.1.A dynamic model was also developed to simulate the water temperature(T_(w)).Based on the simulation,E_(c) and E_(r) on sunny days can be increased by 60%-73%and 38%-62%,respectively,by diminishing the heat loss of the water reservoir and increasing the indoor air temperature in the period of collecting thermal ***,the COP can reach 2.6-3.8,and the developed ATEUS can be applied to heating the LPTEB in a way that conserves energy.

The indispensability of information in agricultural development led to the setting up of Farmers’Information and Advice Centres(FIACs)by the government of Bangladesh all over the *** FIACs mainly provide information related to different agriculture subsectors like crop,fisheries and livestock with the overall aim of improving farmers’***,the effectiveness along with problems and suggestions for improvement of the FIACs’services were examined in this study by surveying two FIACs of Dinajpur sadar *** effectiveness of FIAC was determined on some selected farm(crop,fisheries and livestock)information based on three dimensions *** received,its understanding and *** were collected using interview schedule from a sample of 96 farmers selected by proportionate random sampling *** statistics and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient(r)were used in the *** terms of crop production sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)received,understood and applied‘tomato seed production technology’information,followed by‘rice seed production and preservation technology’(96.9%).Also,as for the livestock sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)received,understood and applied‘beef fattening through UMS method’information,followed by‘livestock rearing’(89.5%).Similarly,in case of fisheries sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)receive,understand and apply‘Pangas(Pangasius pangasius)culture method’information,followed by‘preparation of an ideal pond’(92.3%).In essence,the FIACs are quiet effective in their service *** the seven selected characteristics of the respondents,educational qualification,family income and perception on the service delivery efficiency of FIACs showed positive significant association with the effectiveness of the ***,the foremost problems mentioned by the respondents were FIACs staff inefficiency(83.33%)and lack of effective long term training program for both farmers and

This paper examines the historical evolution of crop-livestock integration in China with a specific focus on its role in mitigating non-point source *** examination of existing literature has unearthed the roots of croplivestock integration dating back to the Western Zhou Dynasty(1046 to 771BCE), ultimately culminating in a multifaceted and intricately interwoven system of rural development policies seen in contemporary China. This paper identifies and characterizes four distinct stages in the historical trajectory of crop-livestock integration: the era of self-sufficient subsistence production in traditional times(1046 BCE to 1948);the period where crop-livestock integration emerged as a pivotal strategy for augmenting grain and meat production under collectivist policies(1949-1977);the phase marked by the industrialization and expansion of the livestock sector during the early years of economic reforms(1978-2011);and the present era in which crop-livestock integration is harnessed as a mechanism for pollution control and ecological preservation in contemporary China(2012 to present). This paper illuminates the diverse contributions of crop-livestock integration in different epochs of rural development within China, which contributes to a nuanced and more theoretically grounded comprehension of circular agriculture. This understanding has the potential to be leveraged to promote sustainable rural development in broader contexts.

Comparative assessment of agricultural technology generating practices in universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria

To understand the technology generating practices among universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria,this study examined sources of funds for technology generating activities,compared agro-technology generating practices and identified constraining factors hindering technology generating *** hundred and fifty-two academic staff were randomly selected from universities and one hundred and thirty-six respondents were drawn from research *** questionnaires with reliability coefficient of r=0.92 were used to elicit *** were analyzed using descriptive statistics,Likert-scale,T-test and Factor ***(93.4%)of universities’respondents used their personal funds to generate new technology compared to their counterparts in research *** most widely employed mechanism for generating agricultural technologies was joint radio programmes(mean=3.38)while the least was biotechnology(mean=2.57).Major areas of differences in technology generation between the two institutions were the physical distance(t=13.54;P<0.05),farmers participation in field research trials(t=8.50;P<0.05),farmers co-finance of adaptive research trials(t=3.77;P<0.05)and adequate research facilities and incentives to workers(t=2.05;P<0.05).Factors constraining technology generation for universities were poor access to knowledge and information on new innovation(r=0.815)while for research institutes it was limited physical resources(ICT,Telephone)(r=0.801).It was recommended therefore that respondents should look into options of writing alternate fund proposals and submitting to a wider range of funding *** of innovation could be strengthened through the formation of a formal technological linkage advisory council.

Rice is a staple food for the Cameroonian population and is the most consumed cereal after maize. The SNDR (National Rice Development Strategy) document shows that despite the scale of investment to absorb domestic demand for rice, Cameroonian production has only been able to satisfy domestic demand to the tune of 20%. The question is therefore to understand the constraints that prevent the development of local rice production to the level of national need. To obtain results, quantitative and qualitative data from secondary sources were used. The rice sector in Cameroon is managed by the state through the Ministry of Agriculture and rural Development (MINADER). MINADER designs development policies and strategies and coordinates the development of activities in the field. The state implements its policies and strategies through the projects and supervisory structures under its supervision. The sector is organized from the supervisory authority to the consumer. Each actor who intervenes has very specific missions that are transformed into effective activities in the field. The tracing of the evolution of rice production in Cameroon, from the year 2000 to 2018, shows three phases of evolution. The first phase, from 2000 to 2008, can be described as a recovery phase, with a growth rate of 44.84%, at the rate of 5.6% growth per year. The second phase can be described as the take-off phase, which runs from 2008 to 2016 when production peaked. The growth rate during this period was 79.96% at a rate of 10% growth per year. After the take-off phase, there is a decline between 2016 and 2018 at a rate of −12.7%, at a rate of −6.35% per year. It can be seen that the increase in production is evolving at the same rate as the increase in cultivated areas. However, the level of rice production in Cameroon does not essentially depend on the cultivated areas. Identifying the sex pheromone systems of local pest populations facilitates their management,especially for moth species that show significant geographic variation in sex pheromone *** investigated the pheromone production and behavioral responses of the Asian corn borer(Ostrinia furnacalis Guenée;ACB)in Xinjiang,*** ACB produces three compounds:(Z)-12-tetradecenyl acetate(Z12-14:Ac)and(E)-12-tetradecenyl acetate(E12-14:Ac)which are two sex pheromone compounds,and n-tetradecyl acetate(14:Ac)which has variable roles in mediating behavioral *** ratios of these three compounds produced in female gland are geographically distinct among different *** analysis of pheromone production showed that the proportions of Z12-14:Ac in the E/Z isomers(i.e.,Z and E12-14:Ac)and the proportions of 14:Ac in the ternary blend respectively averaged 60.46%(SD=5.26)and 25.00%(SD=7.37),with their probabilities normally or near-normally *** experiments in a cornfield indicated that deploying the E/Z isomers and the three compounds in rubber septa close to their gland ratios yielded the most captured males,while other ratios that deviated from the gland ratios showed reduced field *** ternary blend was significantly more attractive to males than the E/Z isomers in the field,indicating a functional role of 14:Ac as the third pheromone component used by the local ***,the dose-response test demonstrated that the application of the three compounds at dosages between 200 and 350μg attracted significantly more males compared to other ***,the characterization of this local ACB pheromone system provides additional information about its geographic variation and serves as a basis for optimizing the pheromone-mediated control of this pest in Xinjiang.

Wetlands have immense poverty-fighting potentials and in Nigeria, more and more people are dependent on wetlands for their livelihoods. To examine the social factors affecting the current status of the wetlands utilization for agriculture in Nigeda, a simple random sampling technique was used to select 200 farmers cultivating wetlands and a structured questionnaire was applied to elicit the information on the social factors. Data collected were described using frequency and percentage and a multiple regression analysis was used to identify significant variables that are determinants of wetland utilization. The results of the analysis showed that significant variables included crop preferences, farming system, culture, taste, land tenure, knowledge of wetland cultivation, perceived suitability, farmers＇ tribe, location of wetland, and farmers＇ age. it was concluded with suggestions for the right combination of policies, public awareness, and appropriate farming methods in order to improve wetland utilization in Nigeria.

Determinants of Smallholder Farmers Adoption of Acacia decurrens in Northwest Ethiopia

Planting a fast-growing multipurpose Acacia decurrens (AD) tree is one of the climate-smart agricultural practices that have been promoted in Ethiopia, which is widely practiced and an important livelihood strategy in Awi zone. However, the extent of its adoption varies considerably among households in the study area. This study investigated the determinants of intensity of adoption of AD among 385 randomly selected rural households in Awi Zone. Data were gathered using a cross-sectional household survey. Descriptive statistics and Two-limit Tobit model were employed for data analysis. The result of the study shows that on average the intensity of adoption of AD was 0.43 (43% of the total cropland area), though majority of the farmers (48.8%) belong to low level of adoption. The result of the analysis shows that being male, educational level, access to seedling, experience in growing the tree, extension contact has positive and significant relationship with the intensity of adoption. Age of head of household, land holding size, livestock holding size, soil fertility status, disease emergence and road distance have negative and significant influence on intensity of adoption. These suggest that expanding road infrastructure, education, access to seedling, secure land property right, disease management, and provision of extension services related to the AD can also improve smallholder farmers’ intensity of AD adoption. The generated information provides a picture of the study area’s situation to the attention of policy makers, development practitioners and institutional service providers to formulate a better policy intervention to sustain smallholder farmers’ AD plantation.
