Background:The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the oil price and its volatility on the stock market of Pakistan before and after the 2007 financial crisis ***:The analyses are carried out on daily data for the period from July 31,2000 to July 31,*** study uses several econometric techniques for the analyses,namely,the Johansen-Juselius cointegration test,generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity(GARCH)model,exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity(EGARCH)model,variance decomposition method,and impulse response ***:The results of the cointegration method indicate a significant long-run association between stock market and oil prices in the pre-crisis *** EGARCH model shows that oil price returns have a significant effect on stock market returns in both sub-periods,while the result for the GARCH model is significant only in the postcrisis *** find a significant effect of oil price volatility on the stock market in both sub-periods from the GARCH ***,the EGARCH model shows an asymmetric effect of oil price volatility on the stock market in the pre-crisis *** decomposition shows that stock market variations are mostly explained by ***,the impulse response function results show that oil price shocks affected the stock market adversely in the pre-crisis period but positively in the postcrisis ***:This study suggests that economic policymakers and investors should consider the oil price as an important factor affecting stock market returns.

Different Roles of Land in rural-Urban Migration:Evidence from China's Household Survey

This paper explores the influence of land holding on rural-urban migration using China＇s 2008 household survey data. It shows that the contradictoryfindings of existing published literature can be explained by introducing a migration distance variable. The empirical studies show that land holding plays a different role in short-distance and long-distance migration. Land holding has a U-shaped curve association with the probability of short- distance migration and has an inverted-U-shaped association with the probability of long-distance migration. Therefore, the government needs to provide more job information and migration subsidies to farmers who have little land to overcome difficulties in the process of migration so as to reduce rural-urban inequality.

Using the instrumental variable model and the regression discontinuity approach, this paper explores how access to primary education affects the Chinese labor market and helps people to escape poverty. Several important findings are obtained. The popularization of primary education has significantly reduced poverty in China, especially in urban areas. In contrast, the Compulsory Education Law has not been well implemented for older children in rural areas. In addition, the labor market premium for completing primary education is much larger in urban areas than in rural areas. Poor rural school quality might explain this rural-urban disparity. Effort needs to be made to further reduce poverty by ensuring adequate financial resources for primary education in poor areas and improving school quality in rural China.

Population Aging and Housing Consumption:A Nonlinear Relationship in China

Mass migration of rural workers to cities will inevitably increase urban housing demand. However, the scale of vacant urban housing will increase in future as a result of the population aging and the rising number of empty nesters. Therefore, demographic transition may not only increase housing demand, but also increase housing supply. Using an overlapping generations model, the present paper investigates＇ the impact of demographic transition on housing consumption. We find that there is a nonlinear relationship between the elderly dependency ratio and housing consumption in China. With the deepening of population aging, housing consumption will increase; when the elderly dependency ratio reaches a turning point, housing consumption will decrease. The turning point of the nonlinear curve also depends on population mobility. A greater degree of population mobility will result in a delayed turning point. Furthermore, the turning point of the nonlinear curve will emerge when China＇s elderly dependency ratio reaches a value of 32 percent in 2025. This means that over the next decade, China should continue to increase the level of housing supply,

Fuzzy cellular neural networks （FCNNs） are special kinds of cellular neural networks （CNNs）. Each cell in an FCNN contains fuzzy operating abilities. The entire network is governed by cellular computing laws. The design of FCNNs is based on fuzzy local rules. In this paper, a linear matrix inequality （LMI） approach for synchronization control of FCNNs with mixed delays is investigated. Mixed delays include discrete time-varying delays and unbounded distributed delays. A dynamic control scheme is proposed to achieve the synchronization between a drive network and a response network. By constructing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional which contains a triple-integral term and the free-weighting matrices method an improved delay-dependent stability criterion is derived in terms of LMIs. The controller can be easily obtained by solving the derived LMIs. A numerical example and its simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Successful drought planning is dependent on the generation of timely and accurate early warning *** there is little evidence to explain the extent to which crop farmers pay attention to and assimilate early warning drought information that aids in the policy formulation in support of drought risk reduction.A socioecological survey,using a structured questionnaire administered to 426 crop farming households,was carried out in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region,*** data analytic techniques used were frequency tables,relative importance index,and multinomial logistics embedded in SPSS v.20 *** results show that crop farmers predominantly rely on agricultural extension officers for early warning drought information,with an estimated 78% of them paying little to very much attention to the *** likelihood ratio Chi-square test showed that there is a significant improvement in fit as X^(2)(20)=96.792,p<*** status,average monthly income,and age were the significant predictors for crop farmers paying no attention at all to early warning drought information,while household status was the only significant factor among those paying a little *** drive to build a climate-resilient society with effective early warning centers across Ghana will receive 60% lower support from crop farmers paying no to a little attention as compared to farmers paying very much attention to early warning drought *** stakeholder engagements should be carried out to harness inclusive support from crop farmers to build a climate-resilient society in Ghana.

Heterotopic pancreatic tissue in the gastric cardia: A case report and literature review

The heterotopic pancreas, which is usually described as an untypical presence of pancreatic tissue without any anatomic or vascular continuity with the pancreas, is relatively rare. Clinical manifestations may include bleeding, inflammation, pain and obstruction; however, in most cases it remains silent and is diagnosed during autopsy. Here, we report a case of ectopic pancreatic lesion located in the gastric cardia. The patient was a 73-year-old woman who had a history (over four months) of chronic epigastric pain accompanied by heartburn. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed inflammatory changes throughout the stomach and lower esophagus, as well as a flat polypoid mass with benign features located in the gastric cardia, approx. 10 mm below the “Z” line, measuring approx. 7 mm in diameter. Endoscopic biopsy forceps were used to remove the lesion. Histological examination of the lesion revealed the presence of heterotopic pancreatic tissue in the gastric mucosa. On the basis of the presented case, we suggest that pancreatic ectopia should be a part of differential diagnosis, not only when dealing with submucosal gastric lesions, but also with those that are small, flat and/or untypically located.

The Role of Certificates and Labels for Cocoa in the Face of Climate Change: A Scientific Review

Climate change threatens cocoa quality, raising concerns regarding sustainable premium cocoa production. Evaluating the effectiveness of certification standards is imperative to address this concern effectively. A multi-stage method was employed for a systematic review of 39 peer-reviewed articles to highlight the impacts of climate change on the biophysical environment of cocoa and its implications for adapting Geographical Indications (GIs). Additionally, a comprehensive review was conducted on climate-relevant standards of certificates in Ecuador, Indonesia, and Ghana. The findings of this study provide practical insights into possible difficulties that cocoa-producing countries may encounter in maintaining the distinctive flavours and quality trademarks of cocoa in the face of changing climate. Moreover, the findings emphasize the need for producer countries to prioritize viable adaptation and product differentiation strategies that meet sustainable marketing standards to protect GIs or place-based intellectual property. Furthermore, the findings indicate certificates require effective multi-level climate change management and environmental-social-governance principles that promote scientifically proven mitigation strategies, such as increasing soil organic carbon, zero deforestation, and reducing emissions while striving to leverage local adaptation policies to reduce location-specific vulnerability. Finally, certificates can accelerate the expansion, intensification, and redistribution of sustainable production for gains that outweigh the inconveniences caused by climate change.

Subclinical necrotic enteritis(NE) is an economically important disease in the broiler industry. With the move towards removal of antibiotics from feeds, solutions to control subclinical NE are desperately being sought. Dietary glycine has been shown to promote proliferation of Clostridium perfringens(Cp) and may thus be useful to include in a NE challenge model. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of increased dietary glycine levels on subclinical NE. A 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was carried out using day-old male Ross 308 chicks(n = 624) allocated to 48 floor pens with 8 treatments of 6 replicates with 11 birds per treatment. Factors were: Cp challenge(C-or C+), Eimeria spp. challenge(Eor E+), and dietary glycine in the grower diet(0 or 10 g/kg). Birds had higher FCR when challenged with Eimeria(P < 0.01) or Cp(P < 0.05) on d 24 or Cp on d 35 but FCR was lower when fed glycine on d 24(P < 0.01). Supplementation of glycine reduced feed intake on d 24 and increased weight gain on d 35(P < 0.05). A Cp × Eimeria × glycine interaction(P < 0.05) showed a higher jejunal lesion scores in birds challenged with a combination of Cp and glycine compared with those with Eimeria and glycine or the unchallenged birds. Lesion score interactions between Cp and glycine(P < 0.05) in the ileum and Cp and Eimeria in the duodenum(P < 0.05) and ileum(P < 0.05) illustrated higher lesion scores in birds challenged with Cp without Eimeria or glycine compared to those not challenged with Cp. This study suggests that using glycine can partially replace Eimeria in a subclinical NE challenge model in promoting the intestinal lesions but not impairing chicken performance.
