Getting physical with medical education:Exercise based virtual anatomy review classes for medical students

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between types of leisure activities and happi-ness,life satisfaction,and health perception of older Korean adults during the COVID-19 *** snowballing and purposive sampling methods,123 respondents participated in the *** results show that participation in outdoor activities and home-based activities served as a strong predictor of happiness,life satisfaction,and health perceptions among older Korean *** suggest that engaging in outdoor activities and home-based activities is likely to increase the psychological and mental health of older Korean adults during the COVID-19 era.

Patellar tendon stress between two variations of the forward step lunge

Background: Patellar tendinopathy(PT) or "jumper's knee" is generally found in active populations that perform jumping activities. Graded exposure of patellar tendon, stress through functional exercise has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of PT. However, no studies have compared how anterior knee displacement variations during the commonly performed forward step lunge(FSL) affect patellar tendon ***:Twenty-five subjects(age: 22.69 ± 0.74 years; height: 169.39 ± 6.44 cm; mass: 61.55 ± 9.74 kg) performed 2 variations of an FSL with the anterior knee motion going in front of the toes(FSL-FT) and the knee remaining behind the toes(FSL-BT). Kinematic and kinetic data were used with an inverse-dynamics based static optimization technique to estimate individual muscle forces to determine patellar tendon stress during both lunge techniques. A repeated measures multivariate analysis was used to analyze these ***: The peak patellar tendon stress, stress impulse, quadriceps force, knee moment, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion angle were significantly greater(p< 0.001) during the FSL-FT as compared to the FSL-BT. The peak patellar tendon stress rate did not differ between the FSL-FT and ***: The use of an FSL-FT as compared to an FSL-BT increased the load and stress on the patellar tendon. Because a graded exposure of patellar tendon loading with other closed kinetic chain exercises has proven to be effective in treating PT, consideration for the prescription of variations of the FSL and further clinical evaluation of this exercise is warranted in individuals with PT.

Downhill running impairs peripheral but not central neuromuscular indices in elbow flexor muscles

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 1-h downhill running exercise on the elbow flexor muscles’neuromuscular *** adults(Control[CON]:n=9;Experimental[EXP]:n=8)completed this *** CON rested for 30 min while the EXP performed the downhill ***,10 min,24 h,and 48 h after the interventions,dependent variables(knee extensor muscle soreness,elbow flexion and knee extension isometric strength,elbow flexion resting twitch and voluntary activation[VA],and the biceps surface electromyography[EMG]amplitude)were *** extensor muscle soreness was significantly greater in the EXP than the CON group following the intervention throughout the entire 48 *** was accompanied by the greater decline in the knee extension strength in the EXP than the CON(mean±SD:-6.9±3.4%vs.1.0±3.2%,p=0.044).The elbow flexion strength,VA,and EMG amplitude were not affected by the ***,the decline of the elbow flexion resting twitch was greater in the EXP than the CON(±19.6±6.3%vs.8.7±5.9%,p=0.003).Therefore,the downhill running impaired the remote elbow flexor muscles at a peripheral level.

The Minimum Number of Attempts for a Reliable Isometric Strength Test Score

Purpose The maximal isometric strength test is widely used in general,athletic,and clinical ***,this test has often been used without considering how many trials are needed or appropriate to obtain reliable test ***,the aim of this study was to examine the maximal isometric strength test in upper and lower body for the purpose of determining the reliability of best isometric strength score and the ideal number of trials for a reliable test *** One hundred and twelve healthy adults were assigned to four different groups(elbow flexion with the vertical and horizontal forearm positions,knee flexion,and knee extension).After familiarization,all participants performed three maxi-mal isometric voluntary contractions with the designated muscle *** reliability of best isometric strength test score was calculated using the intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC)from a one-way ANOVA *** Spearman-Brown prophecy formula was used to identify the minimum number of trials *** The reliability of the best maximal isometric strength test scores out of three trials were high(ICC=0.92 to 0.98).At least two trials of maximal isometric strength test for knee flexion and one trial for elbow flexion and knee extension would be necessary to achieve an acceptable reliability coefficient of *** addition,one trial of elbow flexion would be enough for women,but men would need two *** Our results suggest that overall,at least two trials would be necessary to test isometric strength in upper and lower body muscles in both sexes.

Knee biomechanics of patients with total knee replacement during downhill walking on different slopes

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to compare knee biomechanics of the replaced limb to the non-replaced limb of total knee replacement(TKR)patients and healthy controls during walking on level ground and on decline surfaces of 5°,10°,and 15°.Methods:Twenty-five TKR patients and 10 healthy controls performed 5 walking trials on different decline slopes on a force platform and an instrumented ramp *** analyses of variance,2×2(limb×group)and 2×4(limb×decline slope),were used to examine selected biomechanics ***:The replaced limb of TKR patients had lower peak loading-response and push-off knee extension moment than the non-replaced and the matched limb of healthy *** differences were found in loading-response and push-off knee internal abduction moments among replaced,non-replaced,and matched limb of healthy *** knee flexion range of motion,peak loading-response vertical ground reaction force,and peak knee extension moment increased across all slope comparisons between 0°and 15°in both the replaced and non-replaced limb of TKR ***:Downhill walking may not be appropriate to include in early stage rehabilitation exercise protocols for TKR patients.

Effect of repeated eccentric exercise on muscle damage markers and motor unit control strategies in arm and hand muscle

To examine the contralateral repeated bout effect(CL-RBE)on muscle damage markers and motor unit(MU)control strategies,seventeen healthy adults performed two bouts of 60 eccentric contractions with elbow flexor(EF group;n=9)or index finger abductor(IA group;n=8)muscles,separated by 1 *** participants randomly performed eccentric exercise on either the right or left arm or hand muscles,and muscle damage markers and submaximal trapezoid contraction tests were conducted pre,post,1-and 2-day post eccentric *** week after the first bout,the same exercise protocol and measurements were performed on the contralateral *** electromyographic(EMG)signals were collected from biceps brachii(BB)or first dorsal interosseous(FDI)during maximal and submaximal *** linear regression analyses were used to examine MU recruitment threshold versus mean firing rate and recruitment threshold versus derecruitment threshold *** amplitude from BB(bout 1 *** 2=65.71%±22.92%vs.43.05%±18.97%,p=0.015,d=1.077)and the y-intercept(group merged)from the MU recruitment threshold versus derecruitment threshold relationship(bout 1 *** 2=7.10±14.20 vs.0.73±16.24,p=0.029,d=0.513)at 50%MVIC were significantly different between two ***,other muscle damage markers did not show any CL-RBE in both muscle ***,despite changes in muscle excitation and MU firing behavior,our results do not support the existence of CL-RBE on BB and FDI muscles.

Experimental Effects of Acute Exercise on Cognitive-Based Short-Term Memory Improvement:A Meta-analysis of Repeated Measures Studies

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of acute exercise on short-term memory *** computerized literature searches using electronic databases and examinations of reference lists from relevant studies yielded six studies meeting our inclusionary *** a total of six studies,16 standardized regression coefficient effect sizes(ESs)were calculated to be *** meta-analyses showed a statistically significant increase in short-term memory improvement across both the exercise and non-exercise control groups in trials 1-5[ES=0.96,95%CI(0.95,0.97),P<0.001].However,there was no significant subgroup difference between exercise and control groups(Q_(b)=0.40,df=1,P=0.53).Our meta-analytic review provides suggestive evidence that an acute bout of exercise prior to learning does not result in short-term memory improvement to a greater extent than a non-exercise *** research is needed to further evaluate whether acute exercise enhances long-term memory via enhanced learning and/or post-learning mechanisms.

Neither autophagy nor exercise training mode affect exercise-induced beneficial adaptations in high fat-fed mice
