Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is a serious global public health *** infection may be transmitted through sexual intercourse,parenteral contact or from an infected mother to the baby at birth and,if contracted early in life,may lead to chronic liver disease,including cirrhosis and hepatocellular *** the basis of the HBV carrier rate,the world can be divided in 3 regions of high,medium and low *** major concern is about high endemicity countries,where the most common route of infection remains vertical transmission from mother to *** of all pregnant women and passive immunization with human hepatitis B immunoglobulin are not affordable for many developing *** infection rate can be reduced by modifying behavior,improving individual education,testing all blood donations,assuring asepsis in clinical practice and screening all pregnant ***,availability of a safe and efficacious vaccine and adoption of appropriate immunization strategies are the most effective means to prevent HBV infection and its *** unsolved problem for poorest countries,where the number of people currently infected is high,is the cost of the vaccine.A future challenge is to overcome the social and economic hurdles of maintaining and improving a prevention policy worldwide to reduce the global burden of the disease.

Relationship between PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) levels in high-traffic area determined using path analysis and linear regression

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 levels as related to meteorological conditions and traffic flow using both a linear regression analysis and a path analysis. The Particulate matter（PM） samples were collected from Sukhumvit road, Bangkok, Thailand, at both open（104 samples） and covered（92 samples）areas along the road. Fifteen percent of all samples were separated before the statistical models were run and used for model validation. The results from the path analysis were more elaborate than those from the linear regression, thus indicating that meteorological conditions had a direct effect on the particulate levels and that the effects of traffic flow were more variable in open areas. The model also indicated that meteorological conditions had an indirect effect and that traffic flow had a direct effect on particulate levels in covered areas. The model validation results indicated that for open areas, the R^2 values were not very different between the path analysis and the linear regression model, but that the path analysis was more accurate than the linear regression model at very low PM concentrations. At high PM concentrations, the path analysis model also had a better fit than did the linear regression, so the predictions from the path analysis model were more accurate than those from the linear regression.

Influences of trans-trans farnesol,a membrane-targeting sesquiterpenoid,on Streptococcus mutans physiology and survival within mixed-species oral biofilms

Trans-trans farnesol （tt-farnesol） is a bioactive sesquiterpene alcohol commonly found in propolis （a beehive product） and citrus fruits, which disrupts the ability of Streptococcus mutans （S. mutans） to form virulent biofilms. In this study, we investigated whether tt-farnesol affects cell-membrane function, acid production and/or acid tolerance by planktonic cells and biofilms of S. mutans UA159. Furthermore, the influence of the agent on S. mutans gene expression and ability to form biofilms in the presence of other oral bacteria （Streptococcus oralis （S. oralis） 35037 and Actinomyces naeslundii （.4. naeslundil） 12104） was also examined. In general, tt-farnesol （1 mmol-L-1） significantly increased the membrane proton permeability and reduced glycolytie activity of S. mutans in the planktonic state and in biofilms （P〈0.05）. Moreover, topical applications of 1 mmol-L＂l tt-farnesol twice daily （1 min exposure/treatment） reduced biomass accumulation and prevented ecological shifts towards S. mutans dominance within mixed-species biofilms after introduction of 1% sucrose. S. oralis （a non-cariogenie organism） became the major species after treatments with tt-farnesol, whereas vehicle-treated biofilms contained mostly S. mutans （〉90% of total bacterial population）. However, the agent did not affect significantly the expression of S. mutans genes involved in acidogenicity, acid tolerance or polysaccharide synthesis in the treated biofilms. Our data indicate that tt-farnesoi may affect the competi- tiveness of S. mutans in a mixed-species environment by primarily disrupting the membrane function and physiology of this bacterium. This naturally occurring terpenoid could be a potentially useful adjunctive agent to the current anti-biofilm/anti-caries chemotherapeutic strategies.

One-year rotational relapse frequency following conventional circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy

BACKGROUND Relapse following orthodontic treatment has been a common problem that can occur due to several factors. It was suggested that surgical circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy(CSF) is an effective measure to reduce this ***, very few studies have reported the amount of relapse that occurs *** To assess the frequency of rotational relapse on anterior teeth 1 year following *** Eleven adults(six male and five female) with a mean age of 23 years(standard deviation = 5.2), who had a total of 90 rotated anterior teeth, were included in this study. CSF was performed after comprehensive orthodontic treatment involving the use of full-fixed preadjusted edgewise appliances(Victory Series APC, 3 M,United States) with a 0.022-inch slot and Roth prescription brackets(Ovation;DENTSPLY GAC, Bohemia, New York, United States) and placement of a fixed lingual retainer from canine to canine in both arches using a 0.016 Australian wire(AJ Wilcock, Australia). Degrees of rotational correction and relapse were measured on three sets of casts [pretreatment, post-treatment(at the debond visit), and 1-year post-treatment]. Rotational relapse was categorized as follows:Unnoticeable relapse(0°), barely noticeable relapse(1°-3°), noticeable relapse(4°-9°), and clearly noticeable relapse(≥ 10°). The percent relapse that had occurred 1 year after teeth were aligned to their ideal position was calculated. Data were analyzed by dental arch type and tooth *** Mean rotational correction was 14.05° during posttreatment. Mean relapse at 1-year follow-up was 1.1°(10.8%). More than half(n = 52, 57.8%) of teeth were categorized as having unnoticeable relapse(0°). Of the remaining teeth, 31(34.5%) had barely noticeable relapse(1°-3°), 6(6.6%) had noticeable relapse(4°-9°), and only one(1.1%) had clearly noticeable relapse(> 10°). Comparison of the rheological properties of four root canal sealers

The flowability of a root canal sealer is clinically important because it improves the penetration of the sealer into the complex root canal system. The purpose of this study was to compare the flowabilities of four root canal sealers, measured using the simple press method （ISO 6876）, and their viscosities, measured using a strain-controlled rheometer. A newly developed, calcium phosphate-based root canal sealer （Capseal） and three commercial root canal sealers （AH Plus, Sealapex and Pulp Canal Sealer EWT） were used in this study. The flowabilities of the four root canal sealers were measured using the simple press method （n= 5） and their viscosities were measured using a strain-controlled rheometer （n=5）. The correlation between these two values was statistically analysed using Spearman＇s correlation test. The flow diameters and the viscosities of the root canal sealers were strongly negatively correlated （p= -0.8618）. The viscosity of Pulp Canal Sealer EWT was the lowest and increased in the following order： AH Plus〈Sealapex〈Capseal （P〈0.05）. All of the tested root canal sealers showed characteristic time- and temperature-dependent changes in their rheological properties. The viscosities measured using the strain-controlled rheometer were more precise than the flowabilities measured using the simple press method, suggesting that the rheometer can accurately measure the rheological properties of root canal sealers.

Moringa oleifera Lam(Moringaceae) is a plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. Native to India, it is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its different parts are sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals and present different pharmacological and biotechnological potential. Moreover, M. oleifera seeds are widely used in water and effluent treatment, for their coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation properties, their ability of improving water quality, by reducing organic matter and microbial load, with special applicability in intensive animal production systems, such as aquaculture. In addition, due to its high nutritional value and several medicinal properties, this tree may act as a nutritional and medical alternative for socially neglected populations. In this context, this review gathers information on M. oleifera, emphasizing its chemical constituents, nutritional, pharmacological and antimicrobial properties, applications in the treatment of water effluents, and ecological and social aspects.

Osteogenesis imperfecta(OI)is mainly characterized by bone fragility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome(EDS)by connective tissue *** in COL1A1 or COL1A2 can lead to both ***/EDS overlap syndrome is mostly caused by helical mutations near the amino-proteinase cleavage site of type Ⅰ *** this study,we identified a Thai patient having OI type Ⅲ,EDS,brachydactyly,and dentinogenesis *** dentition showed delayed eruption,early exfoliation,and severe *** the first time,ultrastructural analysis of the tooth affected with OI/EDS showed that the tooth had enamel inversion,bonelike dentin,loss of dentinal tubules,and reduction in hardness and elasticity,suggesting severe developmental *** severe dental defects have never been reported in OI or *** sequencing identified a novel de novo heterozygous glycine substitution,c.3296G>A,***1099Glu,in exon 49 of *** patients with mutations in the exon 49 of COL1A2 were previously reported to have OI with brachydactyly and intracranial ***,two of these three patients did not show hyperextensible joints and hypermobile skin,while our patient at the age of 5 years had not developed intracranial ***,we demonstrate that the novel glycine substitution in the carboxyl region of alpha2(Ⅰ)collagen triple helix leads to OI/EDS with brachydactyly and severe tooth defects,expanding the genotypic and phenotypic spectra of OI/EDS overlap syndrome.

Status and social Capital:A Cross-Sectional Quantitative Investigation of Flood Survivors in South Punjab,Pakistan

A growing body of evidence underscores that social capital mitigates the impact of natural hazards such as *** we know less about the distribution of social ties in developing countries regularly hit by *** study examined the differences between demographic groups in South Punjab,Pakistan affected by the 2010 floods,comparing respondents'levels of social capital measured through proxies such as received social support,perceived community cohesion,accessibility to leadership,and general level of *** carried out univariate and multivariate analyses of factors including gender,education,occupation,landholding,family size,annual income,number of livestock,and home *** data collected in face-to-face interviews with 450 flood survivors,our analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the flood victims'scores on all four scales based on gender and family ***,education,occupation,landholding,annual income,and home stability statistically correlated with levels of social *** with high levels of education,high levels of land,higher home stability,and a government job typically had higher scores in all four measurements of social *** results show strong inequality in the distribution of social capital,with better connections and assistance coming to those who already have better socioeconomic positions in society.
