Understanding the relationship between High Reliability Theory (HRT) ofmindful organizing and Safety Management Systems (SMS) within theaerospace industry: A cross-sectional quantitative assessment

There seems to be a paucity in extant literature that assesses the relationship between Safety Management Systems (SMS) and High Reliability Theory (HRT) behavior process of mindful organizing (MO) among aerospaceorganizations. There could be benefits for organizational safety by exploring this relationship in high-reliabilityorganizations (HROs) like the aerospace industry. Using a modified Safety Organizing Scale (SOS) by Vogus andSutcliffe (2007) and a validated SMS scale, the relationship between SMS and MO was measured. The perceptionsof a cross-section of respondents from commercial airlines with SMS and commercial space licensees without SMSin the United States (U.S.) was assessed. A four-factor model of MO had acceptable fit. A model showing the relationship between SMS and MO had good fit and showed a high significant strength of relationship (r = 0.82,p = 0.000) with a big effect size. There were also significant differences in mean responses among managementpersonnel and non-management personnel on the MO factor “sensitivity to operations” and the result suggestsmanagers were better at identifying personnel with skills and knowledge to ensure safer task accomplishmentthan non-management personnel. The study results suggest that the SMS requirements for commercial airlines inthe U.S. can enrich the identification and understanding of MO factors and it may be beneficial for the commercial space industry to formally adopt SMS. Future research studies may include direct comparisons in multipleaerospace organizations using a larger sample size to determine the overall understanding of MO factors and howit affects SMS.

Recovery rates of persistent post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction using psychophysical assessment:A longitudinal cohort study

Objectives:Persistent olfactory dysfunction(OD)following loss of smell associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major feature of long *** on the prevalence of persistent OD predominantly rely on self-reported olfactory *** studies have tracked longitudinal rates of recovery using psychophysical assessment among patients presenting for evaluation of persistent OD beyond a window of acute *** anchored in standardized testing methods are needed to counsel patients who fail to acutely regain their sense of *** study aims to quantify the degree of persistent OD in post-COVID-19 patients who experience subjective and psychophysical ***:We grouped participants presenting for OD evaluation into cohorts based on both subjective and psychophysical olfactory status at a baseline assessment and assessed their olfactory abilities with a visual analogue scale and the Sniffin'Sticks extended test at baseline and 1-year time *** had confirmed a history of COVID-19 by lab evaluation or clinical diagnosis if lab evaluation was not ***:Baseline olfactory evaluation was completed by 122 participants,53 of whom completed the 1-year follow-up *** participants presenting with perceived OD,74.5%had confirmed psychophysical OD at baseline,with 55.1%at 1-year *** had reliable trends in self-rated versus psychophysically tested olfactory function at both time *** total threshold,discrimination,and identification(TDI)score improved by+3.25 points in the cohort with psychophysical OD(p=0.0005),with this improvement largely attributable to an increase in median threshold scores(+2.75 points;p=0.0004).Conclusions:OD persists in a significant number of patients who fail to acutely recovery their sense of smell after COVID-19,with many demonstrating lingering deficits at *** in threshold,but not discrimination or identification,most significantly mediate improvement

Effects of Using Multivitamins as Dietary Supplements on Cognitive Function in Older Adults: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Multivitamins were widely used health supplements that replenished essential nutrients in the human body. Despite their popularity， the impact of multivitamins on the cognitive function of older adults remained unclear and contentious. This study offered a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of research published until June 2024， analyzing the effects of multivitamins on various cognitive functions in individuals aged 65 and older. We included ten randomized controlled trials encompassing 13，600 participants from multiple databases. These studies evaluated the impact of multivitamins on reasoning， memory， learning， visual perception， idea production， cognitive speed， psychomotor abilities， and higher cognitive functions. Our meta-analysis revealed that multivitamins significantly enhanced delayed free recall (SMD = 0.09， 95% CI: [0.05， 0.13]， p < 0.0001). However， they had no substantial effects on immediate free recall (SMD = 0.85， 95% CI: [-0.18， 1.90]， p = 0.11)， idea production (SMD = -0.00， 95% CI: [-0.04， 0.03]， p = 0.86)， or cognitive speed (SMD=0.34， 95% CI: [-0.07， 0.74]， p = 0.11). Thus， while multivitamins facilitated delayed free recall， they did not significantly improve other cognitive functions in older adults.

The Spectrum of Nail Disorders in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease Undergoing Conservative Treatment: A Case-Control Study

Objective: Various nail disorders have been reported in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, few studies have investigated nail disorders in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. This study focused on nail disorders seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing conservative ***: A case-control study was conducted at Baraha Medical City in Khartoum State, Sudan. Data on patients with ESRD who were on conservative treatment and presented for follow-up between March and September 2021 were collected. Patients’ demographic features, nail findings on clinical examination, and laboratory results were recorded. The obtained data were compared with those on age- and sex-matched healthy individuals from the general population. The chi-square test and Studentt test were performed to analyze categorical and numerical variables, ***: Data on 78 patients with ESRD were studied. Their mean age was 54.6?±?17.6 years, and 45 (57.7%) were men. These patients were compared with 129 controls. Nail disorders were seen in 65 (83.3%) ESRD patients and 86 (66.6%) controls (P = 0.009). Patients with ESRD were found to be at increased relative risk of developing a wide spectrum of nail disorders. An absent lunula, half-and-half nails, nail dystrophy, Terry’s nails, onychomycosis, and koilonychia were the most common disorders and were seen in 44 (56.4%), 13 (16.7%), 10 (12.8%), 9 (11.5%), 6 (7.7%), and 5 (6.4%) patients, respectively. Patients with ESRD had a statistically significant risk of developing above diseases (allP studies are essential to understand their pathogenesis.

This paper is an exploratory study that investigates the status of New Public Management (NPM) and the obstacles to its implementation within the Republic of Lebanon. The study employs a qualitative approach that examines two complementary data sources. The first data source is obtained from an extensive review of documents related to new public management that are available in the public domain such as policy initiatives and governmental projects. The second data source is obtained from in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 public managers. The data collected is analyzed, using an iterative thematic content analysis. The findings suggest that the main obstacles that have inhibited the implementation of new public management in most public agencies in Lebanon include: the politicization of administration in the public sector, the lack of stability in the country, the non-targeted, inconsistent and insufficient training, institutional dysfunctions and organizational challenges, the absence of a country specific applicable model of public management and the unsystematic and non-institutionalized link between concerned international organizations and the Lebanese public agencies. This research is significant as it provides a foundation for the institutions’ practices to improve the design and implementation of new public management in the country. This research not only contributes to the relevant literature but also provides policy recommendations needed to respond to the recurrent calls for administrative reforms in the Arab world.
