Background: A new microorganism identification method using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been developed, however, reports on its use for delineating Candida spp. are scarce. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the identification accuracy of mixed infection between culture test and MALDI-TOF MS. Materials and Methods: Eighty-nine denture wearers (average 74.0 ± 9 years) were selected. Specimens were immediately inoculated onto selective medium for CHROMagarTM Candida, and were also carried out using MALDI-TOF MS. The distribution frequencies of them were analyzed. Results: The numbers and rates of detection/non-detection by MALDI-TOF MS of genus Candida were 58/31 (65.2%/34.8%), respectively. Infection types were single infection in 34 (38.2%), mixed infection in 24 (27.0%), and non-infection in 31 (34.8%) cases. Concerning the single infection, C. albicans was the most predominant (58.8%), followed by C. parapsilosis (17.6%), C. glabrata (14.7%), C. tropicalis (5.9%), and C. krusei (2.9%). As for the mixed infection, the most frequent combination was C. albicans and C. glabrata (50.0%), followed by C. albicans and C. parapsilosis (29.2%), C. albicans and C. tropicalis (8.3%), C. glabrata and C. tropicalis (4.2%), C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. parapsilosis (4.2%), and C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. glabrata (4.2%). There were four MALDI-TOF MS positive results that were negative by the culture test. Conversely, there were six MALDI-TOF MS negative results that were positive by the culture test. The sensitivity and specificity of MALDI-TOF MS were 0.929 and 0.840, respectively. The concordance rate of genus Candida was 0.644, indicating substantial agreement. Conclusion: Candida infection is complicated by disease type and oral cavity environment changes due to aging. A rapid microorganism detection method, such as MALDI-TOF MS, will be helpful to quickly determine the causative pathogen in

The Encouraging Novel Amelogenesis Models and Ex vivo cell Lines （ENAMEL） Development workshop was held on 23 June 2017 at the Bethesda headquarters of the National institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research （NIDCR）. Discussion topics included model organisms, stem cells/cell lines, and tissues/3D cell culture/organoids. Scientists from a number of disciplines, representing institutions from across the United States, gathered to discuss advances in our understanding of enamel, as well as future directions for the field.

Salivary flow rates, per se, may not serve as consistent predictors for dental caries

Background: This clinical study evaluated the effects of salivary flow rate, age, race, health status and medications on the incidence of caries. Methods:Cauca-sian and African-American men and women (n = 501), aged 22-93 years participated in the study. Stimulated (S) and unstimulated (U) parotid (P) and submandibular glands (SM) salivary secretions were collected. Stimulated whole saliva (SWS) was collected as control. Glandular stimulation was achieved using 2% citric acid at 30-second intervals to the dorsal surface of the tongue. Salivary flow rates (SFR) were calculated by total weight of saliva divided by 5 minutes and expressed in ml/minute. Coronal caries were scored using the NIDR DMFS index. Carious lesions were classified according to tooth surfaces by a calibrated single examiner. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the association between SFR with age and percentage of carious teeth. Multiple regression analyses were calculated at (p < 0.05). Results: The variables gender, race, age, health status, medication usage and salivary function were not predictors for dental disease. Additionally, these risk factors were not risk factors for missing teeth. Conclusions: In conclusion, cross-sectional investigations are limited in their ability to identify the relevant variables for disease prediction. In addition, clinical and basic science investigations will be necessary to assess risk factors for dental caries.

Utilization of Diagnostic Imaging in Dental and Maxillofacial Trauma in Selected Kenyan Hospitals

Background: Globally, much has changed in the imaging modalities available to investigate maxillofacial trauma. Nevertheless, the regional practice patterns are highly influenced by availability, affordability and accessibility of imaging services as well as competence in interpreting radiological images and the practice of defensive medicine. The aim was to assess the use of maxillofacial trauma imaging modalities as well as to document patterns of skeletal injuries at selected government-sponsored health facilities in Kenya. Material and Methods: A cross sectional study, done in three health facilities. Results: There were 137 (81.5%) males and 31 (18.5%) females with a mean of 27.73 ± 9.86 years. Commonest aetiology of trauma was interpersonal violence (80, 47.62%) and road traffic crashes (63, 37.50%). The total number of radiological examinations was 250 with a mean of 1.49 ± 0.99 examinations per patient. Plain film radiographs were more (210, 84%) than computed tomographic scans (39, 15.6%). Dental panoramic technique was the most (104, 61.9%) popular. Most participants experienced isolated fractures to the mandible (99, 58.9%) and midface (28, 16.7%). Conclusion: Dental panoramic radiography remained the imaging of choice for mandibular fractures which had the commonest occurrence. There is a shift from the traditional conventional skull radiography to computed tomography in the diagnosis of midfacial fractures. Judicious utilization and prompt provision of affordable services in dental panoramic and computed tomographic scanning at the study centers and other upcoming health facilities are paramount in ensuring timely diagnosis and management of maxillofacial injuries in Kenya.

Enhancement of Gingival Wound Healing by Local Application of Silver Nanoparticles Periodontal Dressing Following Surgery: A Histological Assessment in Animal Model

Background: The value of periodontal dressing and its effects on periodontal wound healing have been questioned. Besides, the early healing of the gingival and periodontal wounds in oral cavity should be emphasized to promote the treatment outcome. Several studies pointed out a potential positive effect of silver nanoparticles (NPs) on the healing process of skin wounds. The present work aimed to design silver NPs periodontal dressing and then, evaluated its effects on gingival wound healing following operation. Methods: Thirty healthy adolescent female rabbits were used in this study. They had intact teeth and the clinical and radiographic examination revealed no periodontal disease. Silver NPs were added to carbonate methyl cellulose as base with two different concentrations of 25% v/v (Group A) and 50% v/v (Group B). On the basis of simple randomized allocation, gingivectomy was performed at the buccal gingiva of the left and right mandibular incisors and subsequently, untreated wounds in the control area were covered with periodontal pack and periodontal dressings A and B were applied in the test regions. Histological changes were monitored in day 4 and 7 post operation to evaluate the inflammatory and repair stage of healing process. Results: We observed significant difference in the inflammatory and repair parameters of the healing process between surgical sites treated with this periodontal dressing and control group. Besides, wounds treated with silver NPs dressing in general terms had all the hallmarks of relatively complete healing one week post operatively. Conclusion: The results indicated positive potential therapeutic effects for this new formulation of periodontal dressing on acceleration of surgical wound healing that led to improvement of periodontal treatment consequences following operation.

Nowadays, nano-technology is a promising option for scientists to enhance dental conditions and provide new techniques to offer a more reliable and comfortable therapeutic pickups. In this regard, there are different methods to manufacture novel nano-structured dental materials, and also modern drug delivery techniques. In this review article, all our efforts are based on the recently nano-dental approaches closely linked to treat or prevent some common dental diseases including tooth erosion, tooth sensitivity, periodontal disease, oral cancer, and so on. All the data and articles putted in this survey are gathered from Google Scholar, PubMed, and some dental databases.

The Benefits of Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment in Association with Gastric Eradication

Periodontitis is a chronic degenerative disease which is inflammatory and whose bacteriological aetiology interests the hard and soft tissues supporting the dental elements. A typical characteristic of periodontitis is its correlation with other branches of medicine since periodontal disease is often associated with several other illnesses or systemic conditions which exacerbate or predispose the course of the disease. Amongst the most frequent gastroduodenal diseases are those associated with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infections such as acute gastritis, chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric atrophy, gastritis ulcers, dysplasia, duodenal ulcer, gastric cancer, gastric MALT-lymphoma. Transmission of the microorganism occurs through iatrogenic pathways (faecal-oral, oral-oral) and through food and water ingestion. From this the possible role of the oral cavity becomes evident as a means of transmitting the microorganism and as an extra-gastric reservoir of Hp which develops inside the oral plaque, the main aetiological agent of periodontal disease. Considering that in a patient affected with periodontal disease the oral cavity presents elevated indices of bacterial plaque in association with infrabony pockets one is brought to ask if it might represent a favourable habitat for Hp colonisation. Furthermore, another query that one might pose is whether the presence of Hp in the oral cavity might be the cause of relapse in gastric infections caused by Hp. Consequently, might non-surgical periodontal treatment, in association with an eradicating gastric therapy, foster decontamination of the microorganism in the oral cavity leading to a better prevention of relapse and re-infection of the gastric cavity?
