Effects and mechanism of Chinese medicine Jiawei Yupingfeng in a mouse model of allergic rhinitis

Objective: Chinese medicine has the potential to modulate allergic rhinitis(AR). There have been studies investigating the treatment efficacy of Yupingfeng San, alone or in combination with other ingredients, in AR, though few have studied the potential mechanisms of these drugs. In the present study, we measured the effects of Jiawei Yupingfeng(JWYPF), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, on mice with ovalbumin-induced AR and explored its underlying mechanism of ***: Forty BALB/c mice were randomly divided into normal control, allergy control and two treatment groups of ten mice each. In the normal control group, mice were sensitized and challenged with saline. The mice in the allergy control and treatment groups were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin and aluminum hydroxide gel. The treatments of JWYPF and Nasonex were administered intranasally in the AR mice for one week. Several signs of allergic inflammation, such as nasal eosinophils and inflammatory cytokines, were measured to determine the underlying ***: Mice in the JWYPF and Nasonex groups had significantly lower AR symptom scores than those in the allergy control group(the mean differences between JWYPF and the allergy control, and Nasonex and the allergy control were -2.00 ± 0.35 and -2.40 ± 0.32). After treatment with JWYPF and Nasonex, the levels of ovalbumin-specific Ig E and histamine were significantly reduced, as were the levels of interlukin-4 and transforming growth factor-b, while interferon-c levels were increased(all P < 0.0001,vs. allergy control). These two treatments also significantly inhibited eosinophil and mast cell infiltration into the nasal cavity but were not statistically different from ***: JWYPF has a potential therapeutic effect on AR via adjusting the rebalance of T helper 1 and T helper 2.

EFFECTS OF MODERATE NOISE EXPOSURE ON HEARING FUNCTION IN C57BL/6J MICE

Objective To study characteristics of hearing loss after exposure to moderate noise exposure in C57BL/6J mice. Methods Male C57BL/6J mice with normal hearing at age of 5-6 weeks were chosen for this study. The mice were randomly sclccted to be studied immediately after exposure （Group P0）, or 1 day （Group P1）, 3 days （Group P3）, 7 day （Group P7） or 14 days （P14） after exposure. Their before exposure condition served as the normal control. All mice were exposed to a broad-band white noise at 100 dB SPL for 2 hours, ABR thresholds were used to estimate hearing status at each time point. Results ABR threshold elevation was seen at every tested frequency at P0 （P〈0.01）. Elevation at high-frequencies （16 kHz and 32 kHz） was greater than at lower frequencies （4 kHz and 8 kHz, P〈0.05）. From P1 to P14, ABR thresholds continuously improved, and there was no significant difference between P14 and before exposure （P〉0.05）. Conclusion There is a frequency specific re- sponse to 100 dB SPL broad-band white noise in C57BL/6J mice, with the high-frequency being more susceptible. Hearing loss induced by moderate noise exposure appears reversible in C57BL/6J mice.

Objectives: To assess postoperative hearing level, and factors that may have influence hearing improvement after ***: Twenty six cases of successful myringoplasty were included in this prospective study. Patient parameters including age, gender, size and site of the perforation, mastoid status, and etiology were evaluated. Hearing levels were assessed as the mean air conduction(AC), and airbone gap(ABG) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz, and their relation with aforementioned parameters were ***: The mean AC hearing gain was 22.373 dB and mean ABG reduction was 20.733 dB. The maximum AC hearing gain was 25.93 dB for subtotal perforation and 26.24 dB for big central perforation, and the maximum ABG reduction was 25.63 dB for subtotal perforation and 24.20 for big central perforation. Mean AC hearing gain was 23.01 dB, 22.72 dB, and 21.39 dB for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz, respectively, and mean ABG reduction was 21.52 dB, 20.79 dB, and 19.86 dB for 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz, respectively. Patient age, gender, mastoid status and etiology did not seem to have any bearing on postoperative hearing ***: While patient parameters do not seem to correlate with hearing improvement following myringoplasty, the size and location of perforation appear to have an impact on postoperative hearing outcomes. Most hearing improvement appears to occur at 500 Hz.

Head and neck cancers become a severe threat to human’s health nowadays and represent the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Surgery remains the first-line choice for head and neck cancer patients. Limited resectable tissue mass and complicated anatomy structures in the head and neck region put the surgeons in a dilemma between the extensive resection and a better quality of life for the patients. Early diagnosis and treatment of the pre-malignancies, as well as real-time in vivo detection of surgical margins during en bloc resection, could be leveraged to minimize the resection of normal tissues. With the understanding of the head and neck oncology, recent advances in optical hardware and reagents have provided unique opportunities for real-time pre-malignancies and cancer imaging in the clinic or operating room. Optical imaging in the head and neck has been reported using autofluorescence imaging, targeted fluorescence imaging, high-resolution microendoscopy, narrow band imaging and the Raman spectroscopy. In this study, we reviewed the basic theories and clinical applications of optical imaging for the diagnosis and treatment in the field of head and neck oncology with the goal of identifying limitations and facilitating future advancements in the field.

· AIM: To compare the outcomes of dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR) using traditional Crawford tubes(TCT) and Crawford tubes with suture(CTS) in the lumen.· METHODS: Retrospective case series consisting of patients who underwent DCR between 2008 and 2013.·RESULTS: A total of 61 DCRs were performed on 50 patients. Patients who underwent DCR using CTS had higher rates of prolapse compared to the TCT group(50% vs 9.4%; P =0.003). Stent removal occurred earlier in patients who received CTS(3.3mo vs 5.1mo; P =0.004). Success rates were equivalent between the two groups(75% vs 81.1%; P =0.684).·CONCLUSION: CTS in the lumen increases the risk of prolapse, prompting earlier tube removal in patients following DCR for nasolacrimal duct obstruction(NLDO).Earlier removal of tubes does not appear to significantly decrease success rates.
