BACKGROUND One of the main characteristics of oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC)is that it metastasizes to cervical lymph nodes frequently with a high degree of local invasiveness.A primary feature of malignant tumors is their penetration of neighboring tissues,such as lymphatic and blood arteries,due to the tumor cells'capacity to break down the extracellular matrix(ECM).Matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs)constitute a family of proteolytic enzymes that facilitate tissue remo-deling and the degradation of the ***-9 and MMP-13 belong to the group of extracellular matrix degrading enzymes and their expression has been studied in OSCC because of their specific ***-13,a collagenase family member,is thought to play an essential role in the MMP activation cascade by breaking down the fibrillar collagens,whereas MMP-9 is thought to accelerate the growth of *** MMP-13 expression has been associated with tumor behavior and patient prognosis in a number of malignant *** authors wish to thank Jadhav KB for his valuable opinion during the preparation of the manuscript.

Three-dimensional virtual operations can facilitate complicated surgical planning for the treatment of patients with jaw deformities associated with facial asymmetry: a case report

This article describes a case we experienced in which good postsurgical facial profiles were obtained for a patient with jaw deformities associated with facial asymmetry,by implementing surgical planning with SimPlant *** this method,we conducted LF1 osteotomy,intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy（IVRO）,sagittal split ramus osteotomy（SSRO）,mandibular constriction and mandibular border *** only did we obtain a class I occlusal relationship,but the complicated surgery also improved the asymmetry of the frontal view,as well as of the profile view,of the *** virtual operation using three-dimensional computed tomography（3D-CT）could be especially useful for the treatment of patients with jaw deformities associated with facial asymmetry.

Overexpression of Dlx2 enhances osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs and MC3T3-E1 cells via direct upregulation of Osteocalcin and Alp

Genetic studies have revealed a critical role of Distal-homeobox (Dlx) genes in bone formation,and our previous study showed that Dlx2 overexpressing in neural crest cells leads to profound abnormalities of the craniofacial *** aim of this study was to investigate the role and the underlying molecular mechanisms of Dlx2 in osteogenic differentiation of mouse bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 ***,we observed upregulation of Dlx2 during the early osteogenesis in BMSCs and MC3T3-E1 ***,Dlx2 overexpression enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and extracellular matrix mineralization in BMSCs and MC3T3-E1 cell *** addition,micro-CT of implanted tissues in nude mice confirmed that Dlx2 overexpression in BMSCs promoted bone formation in ***,Dlx2 overexpression had little impact on the expression level of the pivotal osteogenic transcription factors Runx2,Dlx5,Msx2,and Osterix,but led to upregulation of Alp and Osteocalcin (OCN),both of which play critical roles in promoting osteoblast ***,luciferase analysis showed that Dlx2 overexpression stimulated both OCN and Alp promoter *** chromatin-immunoprecipitation assay and site-directed mutagenesis analysis,we provide molecular evidence that Dlx2 transactivates OCN and Alp expression by directly binding to the Dlx2-response cis-acting elements in the promoter of the two *** on these findings,we demonstrate that Dlx2 overexpression enhances osteogenic differentiation in vitro and accelerates bone formation in vivo via direct upregulation of the OCN and Alp gene,suggesting that Dlx2 plays a crucial role in osteogenic differentiation and bone formation.

Surface-modified deproteinized human demineralized tooth matrix for bone regeneration:physicochemical characterization and osteoblast cell biocompatibility

Tooth presents an intriguing option as a bone graft due to its compositional similarity to ***,the deproteinized human demineralized tooth matrix(dpDTM),developed to overcome the limited availability of autologous tooth grafts,has suboptimal pore size and surface *** study aimed to fabricate a surface-modified dpDTM using acid etching and collagen coating,followed by in vitro evaluation of physicochemical and biological *** dpDTM was modified into two protocols:Acid-modified dpDTM(A-dpDTM)and collagen-modified dpDTM(C-dpDTM).Results demonstrated that A-dpDTM and C-dpDTM had increased pore sizes and rougher surfaces compared to *** immobilization was evidenced by nitrogen presence exclusively in *** groups had a Ca/P molar ratio of 1.67 and hydroxyapatite as the sole constituent,with 65-67%*** rates significantly increased to 30%and 20%for C-dpDTM and A-dpDTM,respectively,compared to 10%for dpDTM after 120 *** collagen release of C-dpDTM on Day 30 was 45.16 mg/*** attachment and proliferation were enhanced on all scaffolds,especially C-dpDTM,which displayed the highest proliferation and differentiation *** conclusion,surface modified of dpDTM,including A-dpDTM and C-dpDTM,significantly enhances bioactivity by altering surface properties and promoting osteoblast activity,thereby demonstrating promise for bone regeneration applications.

The craniofacial Morphology in Adult Patients with Unoperated Isolated Cleft Palate

Objective： To address the effect of intrinsic factors on craniofacial growth by analyzing the craniofacial morphology of unoperated isolated cleft palate in Chinese adult. Materials and Methods： This study included 37 nonsyndromic isolated cleft palate and 39 age and gender matched non-clefts. Twenty-six cephalometric measurements were employed to evaluate the facial morphology. Independent samples T test and Mann- Whitney U were used for comparison. Significant difference was defined at 95% level. Results： Data from this study showed patients with unoperated isolated cleft palate have a reduced maxillary sagittal length （ANS-PMP, A-PMP, P〈0.05）, a smaller ANB angle （ANB, P〈0.05） and a retrusive ANS point （S-N-ANS, P〈0.05; Ba-N-ANS, P〈0.05）. Measurements descripted position of maxilla （S-Ptm, P〉0.05）, depth of bony pharynx （Ba-PMP, P〉0.05）, anterior and posterior maxillary height （N-ANS, P〉0.05; R-PMP, P〉0.05） and mandible morphology （including linear measurements and angle measurements） did not show any significant difference between case and control groups. Conclusions： Patients with isolated cleft palate were characterized by maxillary retrusion. Mandible morphology and cranial basal morphology in isolated cleft palate showed no significant difference with nonclefts. Patients with isolated cleft palate are more vulnerable to cross bite than nonclefts. Intrinsic deficiencies did detrimental effect on maxilla sagittal length, but did no detrimental effect on maxilla position, mandible size and position.

Concomitant paraganglioma and thyroid carcinoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Paraganglioma/pheochromocytoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma can coexist and are often found in multiple endocrine neoplasia(MEN). However,very few cases highlight papillary thyroid carcinoma. We present herein a rare case of head and neck paraganglioma associated with papillary thyroid *** SUMMARY A 51-year-old man presented to our department with right-sided neck swelling and hypertension. Physical examination showed neck masses with obvious pulsation. Concentrations of serum calcium, phosphorus, parathormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, free thyroxine, and calcitonin were within normal *** computed tomography revealed an irregular solid nodule, located in the carotid artery bifurcation. A low-density nodule of the thyroid isthmus with a spot-like dense shadow was also detected. The diagnosis of carotid body tumor was raised and an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid nodule revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma. The patient underwent surgery for lesion excision, total thyroidectomy, and neck dissection, and the pathology was reported as paraganglioma and papillary carcinoma. Genetic studies showed negative results for germline mutation of succinate dehydrogenase subunit D on 11q23. He was treated with ^(131)I after surgery and remained disease-free so *** The presence of concomitant paraganglioma and thyroid papillary carcinoma could be either coincidental or a result of an unknown mutation.

Conservative and functional surgery in the treatment of salivary gland tumours

The principle of modern oncological surgery is to conserve the functional organs or tissues as much as possible based on eradication of the *** salivary gland tumours,conservative and functional salivary surgery,including partial sialoadenectomy as well as anatomical and functional preservation of the facial nerve,great auricular nerve,superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS),and Stensen’s duct,has become increasingly *** the present review,we discuss the following aspects of conservative and functional surgery in the treatment of salivary gland tumours:(i) partial superficial parotidectomy (PP) to treat benign parotid gland tumours,(ii) modification of surgical incisions to improve cosmetic results,(iii) modification of the surgical approach to decrease complications,(iv) extracardial dissection to treat benign superficial parotid tumours,(v) partial sialoadenectomy to treat benign submandibular gland tumours,and (vi) 125I brachytherapy to preserve facial *** majority of the operated parotid or submandibular glands are preserved,and surgical complications are also *** and functional surgery plays a significant role in maintaining normal salivary gland function and in improving patients’ quality of life during the treatment of salivary gland tumours and thus should be further promoted.

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of the palate

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma （LGMS） is a rare, malignant tumor with myofibroblastic differentiation. Despite it being classified as a distinct entity by the World Health Organization, a few cases were reported in the oral and maxillofacial region. Here, a LGMS developed on the palate of a 73-year-old man who presented with a 1-cm tumor on the posterior border of the palate. Based on the histological and immunohistochemical features, a diagnosis of LGMS was established. The tumor was resected, and no recurrence was observed over 2 years. Although the tongue is the most preferred site for LGMS, it may occur in any region of the oral cavity.

Systematic review of mini-implant displacement under orthodontic loading

A growing number of studies have reported that mini-implants do not remain in exactly the same position during treatment, although they remain stable. The aim of this review was to collect data regarding primary displacement immediately straight after loading and secondary displacement over time. A systematic review was performed to investigate primary and secondary displacement. The amount and type of displacement were recorded. A total of 27 studies were included. Sixteen in vitro studies or studies using finite element analysis addressed primary displacement, and nine clinical studies and two animal studies addressed secondary displacement. Significant primary displacement was detected （6.4-24.4 μm） for relevant orthodontic forces （0.5-2.5 N）. The mean secondary displacement ranged from 0 to 2.7 mm for entire mini-implants, The maximum values for each clinical study ranged from 1.0 to 4.1 mm for the head, 1.0 to 1.5 for the body and 1,0 to 1.92 mm for the tail part. The most frequent type of movement was controlled tipping or bodily movement. Primary displacement did not reach a clinically significant level. However, clinicians can expect relevant secondary displacement in the direction of force. Consequently, decentralized insertion within the inter-radicular space, away from force direction, might be favourable. More evidence is needed to provide quantitative recommendations.

Subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis in rigid internal fixation of zygomatic complex fractures

Objective: To introduce the technique of subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis with tri-dimension reduction and rigid internal fixation to treat zygomatic complex fractures. Methods: The subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis combined with tri-dimension reduction and rigid internal fixation of zygomatic complex fractures with titanium microplates were applied in 56 patients with zygomatic complex fractures. Another lateral eyebrow incision or sublabial incision was used to simplify the operation. Results: The postoperative follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 5 years. During the follow-up period, all the patients had satisfying postoperative results. All clinical symptoms disappeared except the numbness in the infraorbital region in 2 patients. In 94.6% patients no complications such as obvious scar, ectropion, entropion or blepharoedema were found, only 5.4% of the patients had slight ectropion 6 months after operation. Conclusions: The subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis have many advantages such as invisible scar, sufficient exposure, minimal injury, and few complications and combined with rigid internal fixation with titanium microplates this technique could be used as one of the routine operation methods to treat zygomatic complex fractures.
