Variations of OCT measurements corrected for the magnification effect according to axial length and refractive error in children

Purpose:The aim of this paper was to examine the distribution of macular,retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness and optic disc parameters of myopic and hyperopic eyes in comparison withemmetropic control eyes and to investigate their variation according to axial length(AL)andspherical equivalent(SE)in healthy ***:This study included 293 pairs of eyes of 293children(145 boys and 148 girks),ranging in age from 6 to 17 years,Subjects were dividedaccording to SE in control(emmetropia,99 children),myopia(100 children)and hyperopia(94children)groups and according to axial AL in 68 short(25.00 mm,36).Macular parameters,RNFL thickness and opticdisc morphology were assessed by the Cirrus^(TM) *** was measured using the ***'s formula was used for calculating the corrected AL-related ocular *** Mean age(±SD)was 10.84±3.05 years;mean(±SD)SE was+0.14±0.51 D(range from8.75 to+8.25 D)and mean AL(±SD)was 23.12±*** RNFL thickness,averagemacular thickness and macular volume decreased as AL and myopia *** correlationsbetween AL/SE and optic disc parameters were found after correcting for magnification ***:AL and refractive error affect measurements of macular and RNFL thickness inhealthy *** make a correct interpretation of ocT measurements,ocular magnificationeffect should be taken into account by clinicians or OCT manufacturers.

Visual and ocular effects from the use of flat-panel displays

AIM： To evaluate the prevalence of eye symptoms in a non-presbyopic population of video display unit （VDU） users with flat-panel displays. METHODS： One hundred and sixteen VDU users with flat-panel display from an urban population participated in the study; their ages ranging from 20 to 34y. There were 60 females and 56 males. An eye examination to rule out the presence of significant uncorrected refractive errors, general binocular dysfunctions and eye conditions was carried out. In order to determine and quantify the type and nature of eye symptoms, participants were asked to answer written questionnaire and the results were grouped by gender, age and number of hours a day spent using a VDU. RESULTS： Seventy-two percent of participants reported eye symptoms related to VDU use. Eye symptoms from moderate-to-severe were found in 23% of participants. The main symptom was moderate-to- severe tired eyes （14%）; followed by sensitivity to bright lights （12%）, blurred vision at far distances （10%）, eyestrain or dry eye or irritated or burning eyes （9%）, difficulty in refocusing from one distance to another or headache （8%） and blurred vision at near or intermediate distances （〈4%）. Eye symptoms were greater among females （P=0.005） and increased with VDU use, markedly above 6h spent using a VDU in a typical day （P=0.01）. CONCLUSION： Significant eye symptoms relate to VDU use often occur and should not be underestimated. The increasing use of electronic devices with flat-panel display should prompt users to take appropriate measures to prevent or to relieve the eye symptoms arising from their use.

Background:The aim of this review is to summarize the optical quality results in patients following the implantation of the V4c implantable collamer lens with a central port(ICL,STAAR Surgical Inc.).Main text:A literature search in several databases was carried out to identify those publications,both prospective,retrospective and/or comparative with other refractive surgery procedures,reporting optical outcomes of patients who were implanted with the V4c ICL model.A total of 17 clinical studies published between 2012 and 2021 were included in this review.A detailed analysis of the available data was performed including number of eyes,follow-up and preoperative spherical ***,the review focused on several optical parameters including higher-order aberrations(HOAs),modulation transfer function(MTF)cut-off frequency and Strehl *** review encompassed a total of 817 eyes measured using different optical devices based on Hartmann-Shack,retinal image quality measurement and ray-tracing technologies at different ***:The outcomes found in this review lead us to conclude that the ICL V4c model provides good optical quality,by means of different metrics,when implanted.

Accommodation in human eye models:a comparison between the optical designs of Navarro,Arizona and Liou-Brennan

AIM： To simulate and compare accommodation in accommodative and non-accommodative human eye ***： Ray tracing and optical design program was used. Three eye models were designed and studied： the Navarro, the Arizona and the Liou-Brennan. In order to make the Navarro and Liou-Brennan models to accommodate, specific geometric parameters of the models were altered with values that were chosen from the literature. For the Arizona model, its’ mathematical functions for accommodation were used for the same accommodative demands. The simulation included four distances of accommodation for each model： at infinity, 3, 1 and 0.5 *** results were diffraction images of a “letter F” for graphical comparison, spot diagrams on the retinal field and Modulation Transfer Function （MTF） ***：Zernike coefficients for the aberrations, Airy disk diameter, root mean square （RMS） error diameter and total axial length of the model were provided from the program. These were compared between them in all distances. The Navarro model had the smallest axial length change as a simple model. The Arizona did not change its axial length because it is designed to be accommodative. The Liou-Brennan model had different results concerning the aberrations because of the decentration of the pupil. The MTF graphs showed small differences between the models because of the differences in their ***： All the three models are able to simulate accommodation with the expected results. There is no model that can be assumed as the best choice. Accommodation can be simulated in non-accommodativemodels and in customized ones.

Intraexaminer repeatability and agreement in stereoacuity measurements made in young adults

AIM: To determine the repeatability and agreement of stereoacuity measurements made using some of the most widely used clinical tests: Frisby, TNO, Randot and ***: Stereoacuity was measured in two different sessions separated by a time interval of at least 24 h but no longer than 1wk in 74 subjects of mean age 20.6y using the four methods. The study participants were divided into two groups: subjects with normal binocular vision and subjects with abnormal binocular ***: Best repeatability was shown by the Frisby and Titmus [coefficient of repeatability(COR): ±13 and±12s arc respectively] in the subjects with normal binocular vision though a clear ceiling effect was *** the subjects with abnormal binocular vision, best repeatability was shown by the Frisby(COR: ±69s arc)and Randot(COR: ±72s arc). In both groups, the TNO test showed poorest agreement with the other ***:Therepeatabilityofstereoacuitymeasures was low in subjects with poor binocular vision yet fairly good in subjects with normal binocular vision with the exception of the TNO test. The reduced agreement detected between the tests indicates they cannot be used interchangeably.

Device interchangeability on anterior chamber depth and white-to-white measurements: a thorough literature review

Evaluation of the iridocorneal angle with accommodation using optical coherence tomography

The changes in the iridocorneal angle structure during accommodation are assessed by means of anterior segment optical coherence *** right eyes were included in the *** device used for the measurement was the Visante？omni *** stimuli were set up at different vergences（0.0 D,-1.5 D,and-3.0 D）.The angle opening distance 500 and 750,the trabecular iris space area 500 and 750,and the scleral spur angle parameters were assessed at the nasal and temporal *** results in the iridotrabecular angle comparing the three accommodative states of the eye did not yield any statistically significant difference at nasal or temporal angle *** light of our results and in the conditions of our study,the structures of the iridocorneal angle are not significantly changed with accommodation.

Comparison of the impact of nesofilcon A hydrogel contact lens on the ocular surface and the comfort of presbyopic and non-presbyopic wearers

AIM: To assess and compare the impact of a daily disposable contact lens(CL) with high water content on the ocular surface and comfort of the presbyopic and nonpresbyopic population after one day of use. METHODS: Totally 20 presbyopes and 30 non-presbyopes non-contact wearers were fitted with nesofilcon A CLs. CL thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters were also assessed. Optical quality was analyzed for all cases. In addition, CL comfort was ***: No significant differences were found in CL thickness, tear film osmolarity, average tear break-up time, bulbar redness, central corneal thickness, corneal volume, root-mean-square of higher-order aberrations(RMS of HOAs) and vertical and horizontal coma, either as a function of the group or time of use. A significant decrease in tear meniscus height and first break-up of the tear film was found in the presbyopic group(P=0.038; P=0.007 respectively). A decrease in spherical aberration coefficient was found after CL insertion(P=0.031 monofocal CL; P=0.023 low addition multifocal CL; P=0.016 high addition multifocal CL). Multifocal CL were thicker than monofocal CL(P=0.045). Comparison between groups showed more discomfort in presbyopes than non-presbyopes(P=0.003).CONCLUSION: This study evidence that the behavior of the daily disposable CL with high water content seems to be stable during the day of use. Ocular parameters measured during wear show that CL behavior is the same for presbyopes and non-presbyopes, being more uncomfortable for presbyopes.

One of the most important developments in the ophthalmology and visual sciences field has been the application of new techniques for imaging the anterior and posterior segment of the eye with non-contact *** techniques have been developed quickly considering that are non-invasive and provide high-resolution images of the different parts of the human ***,the most spread and used technique for non-contact imaging of the human eye is the optical coherence tomography(OCT).OCT technique was first demonstrated in 1991 by Huang et al.(1).

Effect of even and odd-order aberrations on the accommodation response

AIM： To investigate the potential effect that odd and even-order monochromatic aberrations may have on the accommodation response of the human eye. METHODS： Eight healthy subjects with astigmatism below 1 D, best corrected visual acuity 20/20 or better and normal findings in an ophthalmic examination were enrolled. An adaptive optics system was used in order to measure the accommodation response of the subjects＇ eyes under different conditions： with the natural aber- rations being present, and with the odd and even-order aberrations being corrected. Three measurements of accommodation response were monocularly acquired at accommodation demands ranging from 0 to 4 D （0.5 D step）. RESULTS： The accommodative lag was greater for the accommodate demands of 1.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 D for the condition in which the even-order aberrations were corrected, in comparison to that obtained for the natural aberrations and corrected odd-order aberrations for the same accommodation demands. No statistically significant differences were found between the accommodation responses under the three conditions. CONCLUSION： The odd and even-order aberrations are not helping the visual system to accommodate, because their partial correction do not affect the accommodation performance.
